Luke hosts the largest F-35 wing in the world, back-to-back B-Courses, a Reserve fighter wing, and a constant flow of maintainers, instructors and foreign partners — most of it TDY, most of it in the hottest housing market on this list. Here's the money picture for a Luke assignment, TDY or PCS.
TDY: the seasonal Phoenix rate
Phoenix per diem swings between a high winter-visitor rate and a lower summer rate. A six-month B-Course crosses that line at least once, so a lodging deal that works in January may be over the cap in May or vice versa. See the month table on the Luke per diem page and total your class dates in the calculator. A long stay does not automatically reduce per diem at day 30. Confirm your authorized allowance and each seasonal change before booking.
PCS: BAH versus the West Valley
The West Valley grew fast and rents followed. For many grades, single-family houses near the gate price at or above with-dependents BAH; townhomes and shared houses fit comfortably. Run your grade for the Phoenix MHA in the BAH calculator and read BAH vs. rent for how the ratio works. Buying? Luke's three-year tours and a VA loan pencil out in Litchfield Park and Surprise for most O-3+ and E-6+ families — start with the affordability calculator.
Commute math is money math
Fuel and time: Litchfield Park/Goodyear (10–15 min), Surprise (15), Glendale/Arrowhead (20), anything east of the 101 (45+ at 0500). A cheaper rental in Scottsdale costs you an hour a day and a tank a week. Our Luke houses — Canyon Crest, Aqua Vista, Sierra Sunset — are placed for the 15–25 minute drive.
Small things that add up
- Electric bills in July are real — a crashpad with utilities included removes the surprise.
- M&IE in Phoenix is mid-scale; a kitchen keeps most of it.
- Toll-free freeways, but the Loop 303 construction changes routes — check the Luke guide for the current gate picture.
