Grissom ARB Crashpad — TDY lodging that feels like home

Looking for a Grissom ARB crashpad? Grissom sits in the corn and soybean country of north-central Indiana between Peru and Kokomo, and the 434th Air Refueling Wing keeps a steady flow of KC-135 aircrew, maintainers, and reservists on orders coming through a base with a single small Air Force Inn. A furnished crashpad priced inside the government rate beats a chain hotel off US 31 — you get a real kitchen, a quiet bedroom, and DTS-ready receipts.

Mission

434th Air Refueling Wing (AFRC) — the 'Hoosier Wing,' the Air Force Reserve's largest KC-135R Stratotanker wing, generating tankers and crews for Air Mobility Command.

Host units

434th Air Refueling Wing (host, Air Force Reserve Command) · 72nd and 74th Air Refueling Squadrons (KC-135R) · 434th Operations, Maintenance and Mission Support Groups, incl. 434th Aerospace Medicine Squadron · Army Reserve and Marine Corps Reserve tenant units (4th Marine Logistics Group communication company; Army psychological operations and sustainment elements)

Commute

From Kokomo it is a straight 15-20 minute shot north on US 31 to the Hoosier Boulevard exit and the main gate; from Peru it is about 10 minutes south on US 31 or Business 31, and Logansport is roughly 30 minutes west via IN-25 and US 24.

Why stay in a crashpad near Grissom ARB?

Grissom is one of the Air Force Reserve's stand-alone bases: a 12,500-foot runway, two KC-135R squadrons, and tenant Army and Marine Reserve units, all on former Strategic Air Command real estate about 12 miles north of Kokomo. The wing generates tankers for AMC year-round, so orders come in waves — UTA weekends, annual tour, seasoning for new crews, and deployment spin-ups — and everyone lands at the same 4236 Hoosier Blvd inn. When it fills, the fallback is a hotel strip in Kokomo or Peru. Miami County is a standard-rate per diem locality ($110 lodging in FY2026), which does not buy much comfort for a month-long tour. A crashpad gives you a bedroom, kitchen, laundry, and parking for a truck, priced to your rate, with a receipt your finance office will accept.

Who we host at Grissom ARB

  • KC-135 aircrew and boom operators on seasoning, upgrade, or AGR/ART orders
  • Traditional reservists on extended active duty (annual tour, MPA days, deployment work-ups)
  • Maintainers and fuels troops supporting tanker generation surges and exercises
  • AFRC, 4th Air Force, and AMC inspectors, staff, and contractor teams
  • Army and Marine reservists drilling with the tenant units, plus AGR members in transition

Per diem, DTS, and your wallet

Every Grissom ARB stay is priced at or below the Peru government lodging rate. You'll receive itemized, DTS-ready receipts for your travel voucher — for a typical TDY that means zero out-of-pocket lodging cost. Read the full breakdown in our TDY per diem guide, or run your own numbers: the per diem calculator and the on-base lodging calculator use the same rates DTS does. PCSing here instead? Grissom ARB crashpad FAQs

Can I stay off base at Grissom and get reimbursed?
Yes, when the Grissom Inn is full. Call the inn first (765-681-5082, or FSS lists 765-688-2844); if no room is available you get a non-availability number and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 standard CONUS rate for Miami County — $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE. Our crashpads are priced inside that rate.
Which gate do I use and is it open at night?
The Main Gate off US 31 at Hoosier Boulevard is the base's entrance and is reported to be staffed 24/7, with a Visitor Control Center just outside it for passes and DBIDS. Reserve bases do adjust hours outside UTA weekends, so confirm current gate hours on the 434 ARW site or with Security Forces before a late arrival.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The 434th Aerospace Medicine Squadron handles readiness exams and flight physicals, not sick call or emergencies. Nearest ERs are Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru (about 10 minutes) and the Kokomo hospitals (about 20 minutes); Indiana is in the TRICARE East region.
