Getting there

Most travelers reach Fort Benning by driving south on I-185, which terminates directly at the installation; directions from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International funnel onto I-85 South and then I-185 South.

Every vehicle is stopped at the gates, and visitors without a military or CAC credential should plan to pick up a pass at the Visitor Control Center on Lindsey Creek Parkway near I-185 before heading further onto post.

Lodging

The on-post Temporary Lodging Facility is the Holiday Inn Express Abrams Hall, run through IHG Army Hotels at Building 1670 on Ingersoll Road, offering standard hotel amenities like free internet, complimentary breakfast and an on-post shuttle for guests staying while assigned or visiting.

For a different kind of stay, Uchee Creek Campground & Marina occupies 385 acres along the Chattahoochee on the Alabama side of the post, with cabins, chalets and RV/tent sites available to military ID holders and families visiting for graduations or family days.

Housing & nearby communities

Government family housing at Fort Benning is managed as The Villages of Benning, organized into six community management offices, four of which include village centers with fitness rooms, resort-style pools, splash pads and playgrounds available to residents.

Applying for on-post housing runs through a waitlist tied to your PCS departure date rather than application date, so soldiers with accompanying family members should apply as early as possible; the Housing Office at Ridgeway Hall (Bldg. 35, Room 385) also runs a Housing Services Office for anyone considering off-post rentals in the Columbus/Phenix City area and can help with landlord-tenant issues.

Single soldiers awaiting barracks assignment go through the Unaccompanied Housing Office rather than the family housing waitlist, a distinction worth noting if you're arriving without dependents.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

Choosing a nearby community

Columbus: city conveniences on the Georgia side

Columbus sits on the Chattahoochee River, with Fort Benning south of the city. Treat the city as several different housing searches rather than one interchangeable area. A downtown address can put the riverfront within your everyday routine; a home farther north may suit someone who wants a residential setting and is willing to make the drive. For a course with early starts, compare each address with the actual training building. The city name on a listing is too broad to establish a convenient commute.

Phenix City: across the river

Phenix City is directly opposite Columbus in Alabama. It is a sensible area to include when comparing homes on both sides of the river, but a river crossing becomes part of your routine. Check the bridge and gate route at your reporting time before committing. The community’s close ties to Columbus also create a local time-zone wrinkle: Phenix City commonly follows Eastern Time despite Alabama’s general Central Time convention. Confirm local appointment times when dealing with businesses on either side of the state line.

Harris County: a different pace north of Columbus

Harris County includes Hamilton and Pine Mountain and extends the search beyond the Columbus city setting. Consider it when outdoor space or a particular home is important enough to justify a wider search. Its county-wide label covers a large area; do not assume a property advertised as near Fort Benning is close to your daily destination. Map the address, nearby groceries and return drive together. For a short intensive course, the additional distance may outweigh the attraction of a larger home.

Schools & childcare

Fort Benning's School Liaison office, based at 6880 Marchant Avenue, is a point of contact for families with questions about local school options. Actual school enrollment is determined by your home address, so families should confirm their assigned school district with the relevant county school system once they know where they'll live.

Child and Youth Services registration and referral runs through Parent Central Services, also located on Marchant Avenue, which handles registration for installation youth programs.

Healthcare

Martin Army Community Hospital (MACH) opened at its current 745,000-square-foot location on Van Aalst Boulevard in November 2014, replacing the original 1958 hospital. It provides inpatient and outpatient care for eligible beneficiaries and holds Joint Commission accreditation.

Primary care appointments run through a central access-to-care line, and the hospital also offers online scheduling, secure messaging with providers, and an on-post pharmacy serving eligible beneficiaries.

Dental care is handled by the Fort Benning Dental Activity (DENTAC), which also supports Fort Rucker, Alabama, and after-hours emergencies are directed to the MACH emergency room rather than a separate dental clinic.

Everyday services

Base transportation and motor pool questions are handled through the Installation Motor Pool office, a useful contact if you need information on shuttle routes or times around the sprawling installation.

Utility setup for off-post housing in the Columbus/Phenix City area can be researched through InMyArea.com by ZIP code, which the Housing Services Office points newcomers toward when comparing local providers.

Off duty

National Infantry Museum

The National Infantry Museum connects the area’s military identity with exhibits, memorials and an outdoor campus beside Fort Benning. It is an especially relevant first outing for visiting family because it provides context for the training taking place nearby. Give the museum its own block of time rather than squeezing it between errands. If you are also attending a graduation, use the unit’s current instructions for that event; a museum visit and access to a particular ceremony are separate plans.

Chattahoochee RiverWalk

The paved RiverWalk follows the Chattahoochee through Columbus and provides a way to get outdoors without turning every free afternoon into a road trip. It is useful for walking, running or cycling, depending on the section you choose. Pick an access point and a manageable out-and-back distance before starting. For a longer assignment, a repeatable riverfront walk can become part of the weekly routine rather than a one-time attraction. Check conditions after heavy rain and use designated public access.

Providence Canyon State Park

Providence Canyon, near Lumpkin in Stewart County, is a distinct landscape of eroded gullies and colored canyon walls. Treat it as a separate day outing from Columbus. Choose a trail that fits the weather and your available daylight, bring suitable footwear and check the park’s current notices before driving out. The appeal is the landscape itself, so leave enough time to walk rather than simply reach the parking area. It makes a useful contrast to the city’s riverfront and museums.

Making the most of a longer stay

Choose a routine before choosing a radius

A Fort Benning stay can revolve around a training schedule, a family household or both. Decide which daily trip matters most: the course building, school or childcare, or a partner’s work. Then compare Columbus, the Alabama side of the river and the northern communities against that priority. An attractive property can still be the wrong fit if it adds a difficult trip twice every day. We recommend testing the complete route, including the installation entrance, rather than comparing straight-line distance.

Make room for life outside training

Columbus offers a city setting alongside a substantial military community. Use that combination deliberately: locate a grocery store, a place to exercise and a quiet place to study before planning distant weekend trips. If family will visit around a graduation, ask the host about guest limits and parking at the time you choose the home. A furnished rental suitable for one student is not automatically suitable for a household plus visiting relatives. Keeping these arrangements clear makes a longer stay much easier.

Local tips

Fort Benning's gate access rules have at times restricted driver's licenses from certain states or territories that did not comply with the REAL ID Act, requiring an alternate accepted ID such as a passport, CAC or other government-issued credential.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I go for medical care and prescriptions?
Martin Army Community Hospital on Van Aalst Boulevard handles inpatient and outpatient care, appointments through a central access-to-care line, and pharmacy services; TRICARE retail network pharmacies are also an option for filling prescriptions off post.
Is Columbus or Phenix City a better starting point?
Both belong in an initial comparison. Columbus keeps the search on the Georgia side; Phenix City adds homes across the Chattahoochee. Let the particular property, bridge route and training location decide. There is no single neighborhood that is the best choice for every Fort Benning assignment.
Should I search as far north as Harris County?
It can be worth considering if the property’s space or setting is a priority. For early or unpredictable training days, first test whether the extra distance works. A larger search area should produce better-fitting options, not simply more listings to sort through.
Is this guide useful for graduation visitors?
Yes, the local communities and off-duty sections help with planning a visit. Graduation access, schedules and permitted activities come from the recruit’s unit. A visitor’s lodging needs can also differ from those of a traveler staying for several weeks of training.
