Getting there

Most arrivals come through Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, and travelers are responsible for coordinating the trip onward to Fort Drum themselves.

03

Lodging

On-post lodging is provided through the Candlewood Suites on Fort Drum, an all-suite property with 99 rooms featuring kitchenettes with full-size refrigerators, dishwashers, and stovetops — useful for extended TDY stays or families waiting on permanent housing. The property includes a lending library of household items like crockpots and board games, plus a small on-site store called the Candlewood Cupboard.

Daily complimentary hot breakfast and a 24-hour fitness center are available to guests, and the property accommodates pets under its posted policy with an associated fee. A weekly social gathering on Wednesday evenings gives longer-term guests a chance to connect with neighbors during an extended stay.

Housing & nearby communities

Privatized family housing on post is managed by Fort Drum Mountain Community Homes, a partnership between the Army and Lendlease that maintains 3,793 homes ranging from two to five bedrooms, each with a garage, private outdoor space, and washer/dryer hookups.

Single soldiers at E-5 and below generally live in barracks with private bedrooms sharing a kitchen and bath, while unaccompanied senior enlisted and officers (E-6 and above) can apply for The Timbers, a 192-unit suite-style apartment complex near the Rhicard Hills housing area with included utilities and maintenance.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

Choosing a nearby community

Watertown: the regional service center

Watertown is on the Black River southwest of Fort Drum and serves as a shopping and service center for the surrounding North Country. Its Public Square gives the city a recognizable downtown, while other parts of the city offer different residential settings. It is a useful starting point if you want a wider choice of everyday errands near home. Compare the actual drive to your duty location, especially if your schedule begins before normal business hours. A Watertown mailing address can cover different approaches to the installation.

Carthage: a village east of Watertown

Carthage is a village in the town of Wilna, east of Watertown. It offers a different orientation to the Fort Drum area from a Watertown-centered search. Consider it when the location of your assignment or the characteristics of a particular home make the village a better fit. Check groceries, childcare and other recurring destinations along with the work route. For a longer family stay, those combined trips can be more important than the distance to one gate.

Evans Mills: a smaller community northeast of Watertown

Evans Mills is a village within the town of Le Ray, northeast of Watertown. Include it when looking for homes in the immediate Fort Drum region, but pay attention to the precise address and approach road. A small-community setting does not guarantee that every service is within walking distance. Ask about driveway access, parking and who handles snow removal at the home. Those practical arrangements deserve to be clear in advance if your stay extends into winter.

07

Schools & childcare

Fort Drum's Army School Liaison, based in Clark Hall, serves as the point of contact for families navigating local school matters and transitions, coordinating through the installation's school support services program. Because school enrollment is determined by home address, families should check with the school liaison or their local school district once they know where they will live.

Child and Youth Services, operating out of Parent Central Services in Clark Hall, is the intake point for families seeking child care programs on post; contacting this office directly is the practical first step for enrollment questions.

08

Healthcare

The Guthrie Ambulatory Health Care Clinic is the main on-post medical facility, treating active-duty soldiers, retirees, and family members, while Connor Troop Medical Clinic, Bowe Clinic, and Falcon Clinic serve division and garrison soldiers only, with no family members or retirees seen at those sites.

For emergencies or inpatient care, the nearest hospitals are Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown and Carthage Area Hospital in Carthage; knowing these locations ahead of time is worthwhile since they, not the on-post clinic, will handle serious or after-hours needs.

Routine dental care on post is limited to active-duty service members at three clinics — Marshall, Stone, and Clark Hall Dental Clinics — while family members must use civilian dental providers, typically through the TRICARE Dental Program administered by United Concordia.

Everyday services

Mail and personal logistics tie closely to base offices: the Fort Drum Post Office and the Watertown Post Office both serve the community, and soldiers in transit should route en route mail through the OMDC-Pending Gain address to avoid delays during in-processing.

Off duty

Thousand Islands and the St. Lawrence

The Thousand Islands region spreads along the St. Lawrence River between the United States and Canada. Clayton and Alexandria Bay are useful starting points on the New York side for exploring the waterfront. Choose a town walk, museum visit or boat outing according to the season and time available. Confirm the operating schedule of any specific tour before driving out. Crossing into Canada is a separate plan requiring the appropriate documents and any command permissions; a local riverfront outing need not involve an international crossing.

Sackets Harbor Battlefield

Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site connects Lake Ontario scenery with the history of the War of 1812. The site includes the setting of important battles and the former Navy Yard area. It is a good option for a history-focused afternoon rather than an ambitious backcountry trip. Check which buildings or interpretive programs are open on your date. Pairing the historic site with a walk in Sackets Harbor keeps the outing concentrated in one place.

Thompson Park in Watertown

Thompson Park is a substantial city park designed by John Charles Olmsted. Its landscape and the North Country’s memorial to the 10th Mountain Division make it relevant both to local life and to the Fort Drum community. It is a useful place to explore when you have part of a day rather than a full weekend. Check current arrangements for individual facilities; the park, zoo and other attractions are not one interchangeable admission or schedule.

Making the most of a longer stay

A rental that works through winter

For a stay crossing seasons, ask specific questions about heating, snow clearing, driveway access and where vehicles may be parked. Identify who handles each task and how to report a maintenance issue. Plan space for wet boots and outdoor clothing, as well as somewhere to do laundry. These are property questions rather than promises that every furnished home includes the same services. A clear division of responsibilities can save repeated messages once a demanding training schedule is underway.

Use Watertown and the smaller communities together

A home in Evans Mills or Carthage does not mean every errand must happen in the same village. Map a practical weekly loop for groceries, appointments and other needs, using Watertown when it makes sense. Then keep recreation separate from that routine: the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario provide worthwhile destinations when time permits. The most comfortable extended stay usually combines a manageable weekday pattern with a few well-chosen outings, rather than treating every free period as travel time.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a hospital on Fort Drum?
No. Fort Drum has ambulatory clinics, including the Guthrie Ambulatory Health Care Clinic, but no hospital.
What are the on-post housing options for single soldiers?
Soldiers E-5 and below without dependent BAH generally live in barracks with a private bedroom and shared kitchen/bath.
Can I find a mobile home on post?
No, Fort Drum does not have a mobile home park, though mobile homes are available for rent or purchase in surrounding communities; buyers will need to separately secure land for placement.
Is Watertown the only place to look for housing?
No. Carthage and Evans Mills are useful comparison areas around Fort Drum. Start with the location of your work or course, then compare actual homes and recurring household trips. The best choice may be a smaller community rather than the regional city.
What should I confirm for a winter rental?
Confirm heating, parking, driveway and walkway snow removal, and the maintenance contact. Ask whether those responsibilities are included in the agreement or remain with the occupant. The photos of a home in summer do not establish how access will be managed during your stay.
Can I explore the Thousand Islands on a day off?
Yes, consider a destination on the New York side such as Clayton or Alexandria Bay and check what is operating during your dates. Boat trips and other attractions can be seasonal. Leave international travel as a separately researched plan.
