Getting there

There is no airport near Fort Irwin itself; the closest commercial options are in Ontario, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, all well over 100 miles away, so plan on a rental car or arranged transportation for the final leg.

Driving in, Fort Irwin is reached via the Fort Irwin Road exit off Interstate 15, followed by a roughly 39-mile drive to the front gate.

Lodging

The Landmark Inn, located on post, is the only hotel within 35 miles of Fort Irwin, with 179 rooms including standard rooms, suites and handicap-accessible units, each with a refrigerator, microwave and free wireless internet.

If the Landmark is unavailable, travelers typically stay in Barstow, about 39 miles away, where several chain hotels advertise military and per diem rates, including the Best Western Desert Villa Inn, Comfort Suites, Motel 6 and Holiday Inn Express.

Housing & nearby communities

On-post family housing at Fort Irwin is privatized and managed by Michaels Management Services, the community partner since July 2015, with leasing handled at Building 4553 Tippecanoe in the Sandy Basin community. Homes range from two to four bedrooms, some are handicap accessible, and utilities other than phone and cable are generally included in rent as long as usage stays within the median baseline.

Because of the distance to Barstow and the added cost of commuting, most families prefer to live on post, but availability isn't guaranteed at arrival; the waiting list can run one to six months depending on rank and family size, so applying 60 to 90 days ahead of a PCS is recommended.

Renting off post generally means looking in Barstow, since Fort Irwin has no mobile home park (though it does have an RV site through Outdoor Recreation), and the Housing Services Office in Building 111 on Langford Lake Road can provide rental listings and locator maps for the surrounding area.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

Choosing a nearby community

Barstow: the main off-post comparison

Barstow is a Mojave Desert transportation crossroads and a regional service center. It is the obvious place to begin comparing off-post lodging for Fort Irwin, but the drive to the installation is a significant part of the decision. Do not treat a listing’s Barstow location as a promise of an easy daily commute. Ask your unit whether the training schedule supports off-post lodging at all, then compare the actual route and reporting time before weighing amenities.

Yermo: east of Barstow

Yermo lies east of Barstow in the Mojave Desert and provides another location to consider when a particular property fits your needs. Its position along the regional highway network does not make it interchangeable with a home nearer the road to Fort Irwin. Compare the entire trip to your assignment and the everyday services you will use. For a long stay, a convenient kitchen and laundry setup may reduce extra driving, but they do not remove the need to assess the work route carefully.

On-post arrangements: clarify the training requirement first

Fort Irwin’s National Training Center occupies a large, remote desert installation. A unit participating in a rotation may have lodging and field arrangements that differ substantially from an individual attending a course or supporting a project. Establish which situation applies before searching private rentals. If your schedule requires staying with the unit, an attractive off-post home may not be a usable option. If independent lodging is permitted, compare it with the authorized on-post choices and the demands of the daily trip.

Schools & childcare

Fort Irwin's Army School Liaison, based in Building 21 on Langford Lake Road, is a point of contact for families with questions about local schools, available Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Because school enrollment is determined by your home address, families should confirm their assigned school district once they know where they will live.

Child and youth program enrollment is centralized through Army Parent Central Services in Building 21, which handles registration for child and youth programs Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Healthcare

Weed Army Community Hospital is Fort Irwin’s main military medical facility. Its services include outpatient clinics, pharmacy, laboratory and imaging. Contact the hospital about care arrangements for your assignment.

Specialty care is limited at Fort Irwin, so a referral from your primary care manager is often needed for services beyond the core clinics.

Dental care for active-duty soldiers and dependents 17 and under is available through the Shuttleworth Dental Clinic, and families are encouraged to look into the TRICARE Dental Plan for other dependents.

Everyday services

The Landmark Inn area has several restaurants within walking distance, and the on-post commissary nearby is accessible to those with a military identification card.

Pet owners staying at the Landmark should know of Paws and Claws kennel just a few blocks away, useful for boarding since the hotel limits guests to two pets with a fee.

Off duty

Calico Ghost Town

Calico is a former silver-mining town in the Calico Mountains that now operates as a county park. It offers an accessible way to explore the region’s mining history through a developed visitor destination. Check which attractions and tours are operating before going, especially if you are planning around a particular activity. Leave time to walk and read the interpretation rather than treating it only as a photo stop. The outdoor setting still calls for a plan suited to the day’s weather.

Mojave National Preserve

Mojave National Preserve is a vast protected desert landscape between Interstates 15 and 40. Its scale is the essential planning fact: choose one destination and confirm the route, road conditions and services before leaving. A broad preserve marker on a map does not describe a practical day trip. Use National Park Service notices to plan and keep enough time and supplies for the return. A distant desert outing should fit comfortably within your available free time.

Rainbow Basin

Rainbow Basin north of Barstow is known for unusual geology and colorful rock formations in a landscape managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It provides a focused alternative to exploring a much larger preserve. Confirm current road conditions and whether your vehicle is suitable for the approach before setting out. Follow designated routes and the managing agency’s guidance. It is the kind of place where a little route planning makes a much greater difference than simply adding more stops to the day.

Making the most of a longer stay

Respect the distinction between nearby and practical

Fort Irwin’s regional context makes distance especially important. A property may be the nearest available off-post choice and still involve a demanding commute. Evaluate work hours, field periods and the need to return to the installation unexpectedly before deciding. If multiple travelers share, do not assume one vehicle will serve different duty schedules. A rental should support the assignment you actually have, not an idealized routine based on ordinary office hours.

Prepare the home for a remote-area stay

Ask about cooling, water, internet, laundry and the maintenance process before committing. A fully equipped kitchen can be particularly useful when errands take planning, but verify the equipment you will actually need. Identify groceries and fuel along your normal route, and keep recreation plans realistic about travel distance. A comfortable indoor place to rest and study is a substantial benefit during an intensive rotation or support assignment, even when there are interesting desert landscapes nearby.

Local tips

Plan your arrival for daylight hours if possible—the 39-mile stretch of Fort Irwin Road from the highway to the gate is unlit and can be disorienting after dark, and there's no fuel available along the way.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of medical care is available at Fort Irwin?
Weed Army Community Hospital provides primary and outpatient care, several specialty clinics, pharmacy and lab services, but it has no ICU, meaning patients needing intensive care are transferred to outside hospitals.
Is Barstow a convenient daily base for Fort Irwin?
It is a main off-post search area, but convenience depends on the assignment and the full drive to your duty location. Confirm that off-post lodging is compatible with the training schedule before comparing rentals. Proximity within a remote region is not the same as a short commute.
Can a unit on rotation use a private rental?
That is an assignment-specific question for the unit. Training rotations, field requirements and individual support assignments can have different lodging arrangements. This guide describes the surrounding area and does not authorize an alternative to required unit accommodations.
Which desert outing should I choose first?
For a focused visit, consider Calico or Rainbow Basin after checking current access and conditions. Mojave National Preserve requires more deliberate route planning because of its scale. Choose a destination that leaves a comfortable margin for returning to your assignment.
