Overview
Fort Knox is one of the Army's most multifunctional installations, hosting more than 30 commands and organizations rather than a single warfighting mission.

Getting there
Most travelers fly into Louisville International Airport and drive the remaining distance, since Fort Knox has no on-post commercial air service.
Drivers coming from the south typically pass through Elizabethtown and Radcliff via Highway 62 and Dixie Highway (31W) before reaching the Bullion Gate, which operates 24 hours.

Lodging
On-post lodging is handled through IHG Army Hotels at 406 N Knox Street, Building 1327, which operates five facilities and is open 24 hours a day for check-in.
DoD civilians are authorized to stay on post at IHG Army Hotels, which is useful for TDY travelers without government quarters access elsewhere.
For a different kind of stay, Camp Carlson offers an outdoor recreational alternative with 56 RV sites featuring water, electric, and sewer hookups, eight furnished family cottages, and a tent camping area with grills and fire rings.

Housing & nearby communities
On-post family housing at Fort Knox is privatized and managed entirely by Knox Hills LLC, which operates the Historic Community, North & South Dietz, and Oak Park community offices. Incoming Soldiers must first report to the Housing Services Office per Army regulation before pursuing on- or off-post housing options.
For those looking off post, the Housing Services Office provides local listings, school district information, and guidance on landlord-tenant rights, and can help identify rental or purchase options in surrounding communities.

What to look for in a furnished home
A home that fits your routine
Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.
Compare the full arrangement
Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.
Settle the important details early
For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.
Choosing a nearby community
Radcliff: directly tied to the post
Radcliff is adjacent to Fort Knox and closely connected to the installation’s military community. Start here when simplifying the daily trip is a leading priority. Compare individual addresses with the gate and building you will use, then look at groceries and the home’s layout. A convenient location should still provide the quiet, internet and parking your assignment requires. For a household with more than one vehicle, confirm that both have permitted spaces rather than assuming a driveway or shared lot can accommodate them.
Elizabethtown: a broader city setting
Elizabethtown is the Hardin County seat and a separate city south of the immediate Fort Knox community. It broadens the search for housing and everyday services and may appeal to travelers who want a different residential setting. Compare the extra travel involved with what the property offers. A home that is convenient for a partner’s work or a child’s routine can be worth considering, but the decision should account for all regular trips rather than only the rental’s size.
Vine Grove: a smaller neighboring community
Vine Grove is in northern Hardin County beside Radcliff. Include it as a smaller-community comparison when exploring the Fort Knox area. Ask about the specific route, nearby services and any practical limits of the property, including stairs, parking and guest arrangements. For a short course, a simple daily routine can be more valuable than a home that requires additional driving for every errand. For a longer stay, compare the complete household routine before deciding.

Schools & childcare
Fort Knox's School Support Services office, located at Building 1053 Spearhead Division Avenue, serves as the installation's school liaison contact and general point of contact for families with school-related questions, operating weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Actual school enrollment is determined by a family's home address and local school district boundaries, so families should confirm assigned schools with the relevant county school district once they have housing.
For childcare, Army Parent Central Services is based in the same Building 1053 location and coordinates child and youth program registrations. Registration appointments are available by scheduling in the afternoon window, and the office closes for an extended period on the third Thursday of each month for administrative purposes.

Healthcare
Ireland Army Health Clinic, located at 200 Brule Street, Building 871, is the primary military medical facility on Fort Knox, with a pharmacy open weekdays.
Active-duty personnel, including those on TDY or mobilization orders, generally need a referral before seeking care at an urgent care facility, while TRICARE-enrolled family members can typically be seen at network urgent care sites without prior authorization.

Everyday services
The Housing Services Office, in addition to its housing role, maintains information on shopping availability, relocation services, local churches, and utility providers, functioning as a broader newcomer resource beyond just housing referrals. Families can also use InMyArea.com to compare utility providers by ZIP code when setting up a new residence.
The Ireland Army Health Clinic page also lists a separate employment verification phone and fax line, distinct from the clinic's main number.

Off duty
General George Patton Museum of Leadership
The Patton Museum at Fort Knox focuses on leadership and the life and legacy of George S. Patton. It gives a visit to the area a connection to the Army’s institutional history beyond the assignment itself. Check the museum’s own current visitor information for access and opening arrangements. Do not assume that access to one museum or public facility provides access to other parts of the post. Leave time to engage with the exhibits rather than adding the museum as an afterthought.
Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area
Otter Creek offers a wooded landscape near the Ohio River with outdoor recreation managed separately from the installation. It can provide a change of scene without making every day off a trip to Louisville. Choose the activity first and check the managing agency’s current information for access, permits and facilities. A planned walk or picnic is a different outing from fishing or camping. Bring the supplies your chosen activity needs rather than assuming all services are available at the entrance.
Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park
The national historical park near Hodgenville preserves sites associated with Abraham Lincoln’s early childhood. The Sinking Spring and Knob Creek locations are distinct parts of the story, so choose your route before leaving. It is a worthwhile regional history trip when you have time beyond a quick afternoon errand. Check the National Park Service information for which buildings and programs are open. Combining a visitor-center stop with time at the landscape makes the history easier to understand.

Making the most of a longer stay
Use the region’s geography to simplify the week
Radcliff, Vine Grove and Elizabethtown give you a compact set of comparison areas without immediately expanding the search toward Louisville. Start with those communities and the exact Fort Knox duty location. If the first options do not fit, widen the search for a specific reason such as accessibility, a pet or an additional bedroom. A larger radius can create more choices while also increasing the effort of every workday.
Make a short course comfortable
A course-focused stay benefits from a proper desk, reliable internet, laundry and a quiet sleeping arrangement. Those features are worth confirming even when the rental looks attractive in photos. If sharing, discuss study time and bathroom access as well as the rent. Keep regional outings flexible around the actual schedule. The museums and nearby outdoor areas provide enough variety that a free afternoon does not need an elaborate itinerary to be worthwhile.

Local tips
Because Fort Knox has no public transportation on post, plan to have a personal vehicle or arrange transport in advance, especially if staying at off-post lodging near Radcliff or Elizabethtown for an extended TDY.
If you anticipate needing emergency medical care, know in advance that Ireland Army Health Clinic does not provide emergency services, so understanding the nearest off-post emergency options before you need them will save time in a real crisis.
Reservations at IHG Army Hotels are strongly encouraged rather than assumed, since the installation's daytime population of over 26,000 means lodging and services can be busy; calling ahead to confirm room availability and current rates is worthwhile before travel.
