Getting there
Fort Lee's layout means your entry point can drop you into a different city or county depending on which gate you use, since the installation borders Petersburg, Hopewell, Colonial Heights, and the counties of Prince George, Chesterfield and Dinwiddie.
First-time visitors without a federal ID card must stop at the Visitor Control Center next to the Gregg Gate main entrance for an initial background check, using a valid government-issued photo ID or passport.

What to look for in a furnished home
A home that fits your routine
Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.
Compare the full arrangement
Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.
Settle the important details early
For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.
Choosing a nearby community
Hopewell: the river-side community
Hopewell is an independent city in Virginia’s Tri-Cities area, near the Appomattox and James river setting. It gives a Fort Lee housing search a different orientation from Petersburg or Colonial Heights. Compare the actual approach to the installation and the services close to the property. If a river-side or historic-area home appeals to you, still check practical details such as parking, stairs and a quiet workspace. The character of the neighborhood should complement a workable daily routine.
Colonial Heights: another Tri-Cities option
Colonial Heights is a separate independent city within the same regional housing market. It is worth including when comparing properties near Fort Lee, particularly when the home’s layout or access to daily errands fits your needs. Use the full address to evaluate the trip rather than relying on a broad Richmond-area description. For families, municipal boundaries can matter for school planning, so confirm the school serving the property before making an accommodation decision.
Petersburg: a historic city beside the Appomattox
Petersburg sits on the Appomattox River south of Richmond and has a distinct historic urban setting. A rental here can put local history and city services into your everyday surroundings. Evaluate each property on its own: older buildings can have very different layouts, parking and accessibility. Ask for details about the workspace and laundry rather than assuming an appealing exterior establishes the right fit for several months. Compare the duty route before prioritizing a favorite downtown location.

Schools & childcare
The Army School Liaison office, based on Yorktown Drive, serves as the point of contact for families navigating local school enrollment questions, keeping weekday office hours.
Child and Youth Parent Central Registration, also on Yorktown Drive, is the intake point for installation child and youth programs, operating weekday mornings through late afternoon.

Healthcare
Kenner Army Health Clinic, located at 700 24th Street, provides primary outpatient care for active-duty members, retirees and their TRICARE-enrolled families, while referring specialty care and inpatient hospitalization to regional military and civilian partners. Clinic hours run weekday mornings to mid-afternoon, and clinical availability is reduced on the first and third Thursday afternoons of each month for staff training.
For specialty and inpatient needs, beneficiaries are also served by Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, McDonald Army Health Center at Fort Eustis, and U.S. Air Force Hospital Langley, in addition to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda.
The Fort Lee Dental Clinic Command, in Building 8204, provides dental care for active-duty permanent party personnel and military students attending training courses on the installation.

The Exceptional Family Member Program office supports active-duty families with a member who has physical, emotional, mental or educational special needs, offering referrals to local support services and factoring those needs into assignment considerations.

Off duty
Petersburg National Battlefield
Petersburg National Battlefield preserves multiple locations associated with the Civil War siege. It is a collection of sites rather than one continuous visitor stop, so decide which part you want to see before navigating. The Eastern Front, other battlefield units and related historic locations tell different parts of the story. Use the National Park Service’s current maps and visitor information. A focused visit with time for interpretation is more rewarding than trying to cover the entire battlefield region in one afternoon.
City Point in Hopewell
City Point, now part of Hopewell, sits at a historically important river junction and served as Union headquarters during the siege of Petersburg. Its connection with Grant and the wartime supply system makes it a useful companion to a battlefield visit. Research the current visitor arrangements for the particular historic site you intend to see. It can also anchor a more compact outing in Hopewell when a full regional tour does not fit the day.
Pamplin Historical Park
Pamplin Historical Park near Petersburg combines preserved battlefield landscape with the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier. It offers a different, more concentrated interpretive experience from driving among the national battlefield’s separate units. Check the park’s current schedule and ticket information before planning around it. Leave enough time for both indoor exhibits and the grounds if both interest you. Choosing one substantial history destination can be more satisfying than collecting several brief stops.

Making the most of a longer stay
Look beyond a broad Richmond label
A property advertised for the Richmond region may not be a practical choice for daily duties at Fort Lee. Begin with the Tri-Cities communities and your exact reporting destination, then expand the search if there is a clear benefit. A home farther north can make sense for a household with another regular destination, but evaluate that tradeoff explicitly. Separate weekend access to Richmond from the commute you will repeat throughout the course.
Use the area’s history without overplanning
The region has enough historic sites to explore gradually over an extended assignment. Start with a single battlefield unit or museum and add another on a later day off. Meanwhile, make the home work for study, meals and laundry. If sharing with another student, compare bedroom privacy and desk space before choosing a property with a larger living room. Those ordinary decisions matter throughout the stay, while attractions can remain flexible.

Local tips
Because Fort Lee's gates open into different jurisdictions, confirm which city or county your lodging, appointment, or off-post errand falls under before you head out — a Petersburg address and a Chesterfield address may both be a short drive from post but require different routes depending on your gate.
Ask the lodging provider or housing community about its current pet arrangements before choosing a room or home.
