Overview

Fort Riley serves as the home of the 1st Infantry Division, the Army's storied 'Big Red One,' with a mission centered on building and deploying combat-ready forces for joint and multinational operations.

Getting there

Fort Riley does not have its own commercial airport; travelers are directed to book flights into Manhattan, Kansas, or Kansas City, Missouri, and arrange ground transport from there.

There is no post shuttle system at Fort Riley, so incoming soldiers without a personal vehicle typically rely on Uber, Lyft, or a sponsor for the trip from the airport.

Lodging

On-post lodging for TDY and PCS travelers is centered on the Candlewood Suites Hotel, operated by IHG, located on Custer Hill. It functions as the installation's official Army Lodging facility, and reservations can be made well in advance of arrival by phone or online.

The Candlewood Suites offers pet-friendly rooms, though availability is limited and should be requested at the time of booking. Because on-post pet space is tight, travelers with animals should budget extra lead time; the surrounding off-post area also has pet care and extended-stay options according to the lodging office.

Check-in at Candlewood Suites is after 4 p.m. and checkout is 11 a.m. Per an April 2025 policy update, PCS reservations require a Government Travel Card guarantee.

Housing & nearby communities

On-post family housing at Fort Riley is privatized and managed by Corvias Military Living, with five distinct neighborhoods spread across the installation. Homes are assigned based on rank and bedroom eligibility, and wait times vary significantly depending on those factors, so applying as soon as orders are known is worthwhile.

Soldiers must in-process through the Army Housing Office and apply for quarters within 30 days of signing in to preserve a backdated eligibility date tied to their departure from the previous duty station.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

Choosing a nearby community

Junction City: the Geary County side

Junction City is near Fort Riley at the meeting of the Smoky Hill and Republican rivers, which form the Kansas River. It is a natural starting point for a search on the western side of the installation community. Compare the home’s actual approach to your duty destination, then look at groceries, parking and the indoor layout. A short geographic distance is helpful only if the route and the property both work for your schedule.

Manhattan: a college-town setting

Manhattan is home to Kansas State University and has a different rhythm from Junction City. It can appeal to travelers who want a university-town setting alongside their assignment. Consider how that setting fits your priorities: a quiet study space, access to restaurants or a household’s other daily destinations. Check parking and the work route rather than assuming a rental near the university is automatically convenient for Fort Riley. The city’s event calendar is also worth reviewing when planning visitors.

Ogden: between the two cities

Ogden is a smaller city near Fort Riley between Manhattan and Junction City. It gives you a third comparison area rather than forcing an immediate choice between the two larger communities. Evaluate the specific home and which errands would still require a trip elsewhere. For a shared stay, discuss vehicle use early; being between cities does not mean two travelers with different schedules can comfortably rely on one car. Use the actual duty location to judge the commute.

Schools & childcare

Fort Riley's School Liaison Officer, based on Normandy Drive in the Custer Hill area, serves as the primary point of contact for families navigating school enrollment and transitions in the surrounding districts. The office keeps standard weekday hours and is closed on weekends and holidays.

Child and youth enrollment runs through Army Parent Central (formerly Central Enrollment), also located on Normandy Drive, which handles intake for installation child and youth programs. Its hours extend later on Thursdays, which can help working parents coordinate enrollment appointments.

Healthcare

Irwin Army Community Hospital, located on Huebner Road, is the installation's primary medical facility, a 47-bed hospital that underwent a major expansion marked by a 2016 rededication and offers roughly 45 percent more space than before. It serves active duty, family members, retirees, and other eligible beneficiaries on a priority basis, with active duty seen first.

Appointments, pharmacy refills, and referrals all route through a single scheduling line, and the hospital's Beneficiary Counseling and Assistance Coordinator office on the first floor can help newcomers understand their TRICARE benefits.

Dental care at Irwin is limited to active duty service members for routine treatment, with only emergency dental care available to other eligible beneficiaries, so family members should expect to rely on TRICARE Dental Program network providers for non-emergency needs.

Everyday services

New arrivals in-process through the 1st Replacement Company on Main Post, which operates around the clock and handles sign-in for nearly all incoming soldiers, with a short list of units such as MEDDAC, DENTAC, and CID handled separately.

For those bringing recreational vehicles, boats, or trailers, Fort Riley offers free storage at the Camp Forsyth RV lot east of the Commissary, though residents note the lot fills up and a waiting list may apply; registration for a slot happens at the Self Help Store on Cameron Avenue.

Off duty

Flint Hills Discovery Center

The Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan introduces the region’s prairie ecology, history and culture through exhibits and educational programming. It is a useful early outing because it gives context to the landscape you will see throughout the assignment. It also provides an indoor alternative when an outdoor plan does not fit the weather. Check the current exhibitions and hours, then leave time to explore the surrounding downtown area if that suits your group.

Milford Lake

Milford Lake is a large reservoir on the Republican River near the Junction City side of the region. Its recreation areas make it an option for a lakeside afternoon or a more planned outdoor day. Decide which access area and activity you want before leaving; a large lake is not a single destination. Check the relevant park or managing agency for water conditions, camping arrangements and any current advisories. Build the trip around the activity rather than simply navigating to the lake name.

Konza Prairie

Konza Prairie Biological Station protects tallgrass prairie in the Flint Hills and is associated with Kansas State University and The Nature Conservancy. It is a working research landscape, so use designated public routes and follow the visitor guidance. The open scenery is a good way to understand what makes the region distinctive. Choose a walk appropriate to the weather, daylight and your group, and do not assume every road or path through the prairie is open for recreation.

Making the most of a longer stay

Let the daily destination decide the side of the region

Fort Riley’s surrounding communities offer genuinely different settings. A Junction City home, a Manhattan apartment and an Ogden rental may all appear in the same broad search but produce different routines. Identify the place you will report most often, then compare the approach from each property. Add a school, childcare or partner’s work destination if applicable. This avoids choosing a home for one convenient trip while making the rest of the household’s week more complicated.

Make the prairie part of the stay

The Flint Hills provide a setting worth getting to know gradually. An indoor introduction at the Discovery Center, a designated trail at Konza and a separate lake outing offer different ways to explore without repeating the same activity. Leave those outings flexible around your training schedule. At home, prioritize a comfortable workspace and practical storage over features you are unlikely to use. A longer assignment becomes easier when the weekday setup is dependable.

Local tips

If you're relocating with pets, get in front of the paperwork early: Corvias housing caps most households at two pets with several breed exclusions, and on-post lodging's pet-friendly rooms are limited, so confirming availability at booking time avoids last-minute scrambling.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I go for dental care as a family member?
Irwin Army Community Hospital provides routine dental care to active duty only; family members and other beneficiaries are limited to emergency dental care on post and should use TRICARE Dental Program network providers otherwise.
Is Manhattan worth considering for a Fort Riley stay?
Yes, particularly if the university-town setting or a specific property appeals to you. Compare the route to your actual assignment with options in Junction City and Ogden. The wider choice is useful only if it still supports a manageable daily schedule.
Which local outing gives the best introduction to the area?
The Flint Hills Discovery Center is a good starting point for understanding the prairie landscape. Follow it with a designated public walk at Konza or a planned visit to Milford Lake, depending on your interests and the conditions.
Can roommates share one vehicle?
Only if their schedules and daily destinations make that workable. Discuss reporting times, errands and alternative transport before agreeing to the property. Two people assigned to the same installation may still need independent transportation.
