Getting there

Most travelers arrive through Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, which includes a rest area and information center for incoming military personnel.

Fort Stewart is also reachable by major East Coast highways, including I-95, I-16, and US-17, with US-84 serving as the main route through Hinesville itself.

Lodging

The Temporary Lodging Facility, operated by IHG Army Hotels, sits in Building 4951 across from Club Stewart and offers kitchenette-equipped rooms with handicap accessibility and a limited number of pet-friendly rooms.

The Land Dominance Center Billeting and Protocol facility, known locally as the Green Roof Inn, provides an alternative option primarily for National Guard and student soldiers, with twin shared rooms and single queen rooms spread across the National Guard training area. Active-duty members, retirees, civilians, and veterans can book on a space-available basis, though the office closes evenings and weekends, so late arrivals should call ahead.

Housing & nearby communities

On-post family housing is privatized and managed by Balfour Beatty Communities under the name Fort Stewart Family Homes, comprising 3,268 air-conditioned units across ten neighborhoods, ranging from two- to five-bedroom single-family, duplex, townhome, and apartment styles. Most homes are reserved for active-duty Army families, with the largest share allotted to junior and mid-grade enlisted ranks.

Soldiers looking off-post must first process through the Housing Service Office, which maintains rental listings, area maps, and helps mediate landlord disputes before anyone signs a lease in the Hinesville area.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

Choosing a nearby community

Hinesville: the immediate Fort Stewart community

Hinesville is the Liberty County seat and the principal city in the Fort Stewart area. It is a sensible first search when daily access to the post takes priority over proximity to Savannah. Compare addresses within the city rather than treating all Hinesville listings as equally convenient. Look at groceries, childcare and the entrance you will use as one daily route. A well-located home here can help keep an intensive assignment focused on the work rather than repeated regional driving.

Richmond Hill: toward the Savannah region

Richmond Hill is in Bryan County and belongs to the Savannah metropolitan area. It offers a different geographic orientation from Hinesville and may suit a household with reasons to be closer to that side of the region. The tradeoff is the specific drive to Fort Stewart, which should be tested before committing. Avoid treating access to Savannah as automatically worth a longer work trip. Compare the whole household’s needs and the actual home, including parking and workspace.

Ludowici: a smaller Long County setting

Ludowici is the seat of Long County and part of the Hinesville–Fort Stewart region. It is worth including when a smaller-community location or particular property fits your plans. Ask which everyday services are close to the address and which require a drive into Hinesville or elsewhere. For a longer stay, that difference affects the weekly routine. Judge the location using your real reporting destination and expected gate, not just a listing’s claim to be near Fort Stewart.

Schools & childcare

The Army School Support Service, based in Building 4973 on Niles Avenue, serves as the point of contact for families navigating local school matters at Fort Stewart, with staff available on weekdays to help connect incoming families to information about the area's schools.

Parent Central Services & Registration, located at Building 438 on Lindquist Road, coordinates enrollment for child and youth programs, with weekday hours and an extended morning session on the third Thursday of each month for families needing added flexibility.

Healthcare

Winn Army Community Hospital, located at Building 302 on Harmon Avenue, provides emergency and routine medical care to active-duty service members, their families, and eligible retirees, with all staffed emergency physicians board-certified in emergency medicine.

Dental care is spread across four on-post Dental Treatment Facilities, including the Lane Dental Clinic (Building 440, next to the Arts and Crafts Shop) and a clinic located within Winn itself for oral surgery, plus two additional clinics on post.

When Winn cannot provide a needed specialty service, patients are referred to TRICARE-approved providers off-post, with all referrals requiring prior TRICARE approval — a step worth building extra time into any care plan for specialized appointments.

Everyday services

The Housing Service Office doubles as a everyday resource beyond initial move-in, offering community area briefs, rental and sales booklets, and assistance resolving tenant disputes for anyone living off-post in the Hinesville area throughout their assignment.

For everyday utility setup, newcomers are directed to InMyArea.com to compare local providers by ZIP code, a practical starting point when settling into off-post housing near Fort Stewart.

Off duty

Fort McAllister State Park

Fort McAllister State Park near Richmond Hill combines Civil War earthworks with an Ogeechee River and salt-marsh setting. The historic fort and surrounding landscape provide a focused outing with both history and time outdoors. Check current park information before choosing a particular activity or campground. It is useful to decide whether you want a short historic-site visit or a longer recreation day so the trip does not become rushed.

Savannah’s historic district

Savannah’s historic district is organized around a network of squares, historic streets and the riverfront. It is a strong regional outing when you have time to explore on foot rather than drive between isolated stops. Pick a few areas of interest, arrange parking and leave room for a meal or museum visit. From a Fort Stewart assignment, treat Savannah as a deliberate trip; choosing lodging there simply for a weekend atmosphere may not serve your weekday schedule.

Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge

Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge in McIntosh County includes marsh, woodland and ponds on a former military airfield. It provides a quieter nature-focused contrast to Savannah and the area’s historic forts. Choose the outing around wildlife observation and the current visitor guidance, rather than expecting a developed entertainment venue. Bring what you need for time outdoors, stay in public areas and check refuge notices before traveling.

Making the most of a longer stay

Separate Fort Stewart and Hunter plans

A regional military connection does not make every duty location interchangeable. If an assignment involves more than one location, identify where you will spend most days and how often the secondary trip occurs. A household balancing Fort Stewart and the Savannah area should compare both routes before selecting a home. The right compromise depends on the actual schedule, not the broad label of coastal Georgia.

Build a comfortable coastal-Georgia routine

For a multi-month stay, look for a practical kitchen, reliable cooling, laundry and a place to work quietly. Ask about the maintenance contact and where vehicles can park. Then choose a few local outings that fit the available time: a historic fort, a nature refuge and Savannah offer very different experiences. Keeping weekday logistics simple makes it easier to enjoy those opportunities without spending every free day catching up on errands.

Local tips

Because Fort Stewart has no base operator, finding the right office or unit contact means using the Fort Stewart Directory page or the My Army Post App rather than calling a central switchboard — worth bookmarking before you arrive.

If lodging at the Green Roof Inn, plan your arrival during office hours (Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.); the office is closed weekends and holidays, so late or weekend arrivals need prior check-in arrangements to avoid being locked out.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I go for healthcare while stationed at Fort Stewart?
Winn Army Community Hospital on Harmon Avenue is the main medical facility, providing emergency and primary care with access prioritized by TRICARE category; dental care is split across four on-post clinics, though family dental care is limited and mostly routed to private providers.
Should I stay in Savannah for a Fort Stewart assignment?
Compare the daily drive before making that choice. Hinesville, Richmond Hill and Ludowici provide other starting points. Savannah can be an excellent outing without needing to be the place you return to after every training day.
Is Richmond Hill a useful compromise for a household?
It may be when the household has regular destinations toward Savannah as well as Fort Stewart. Map both routines and compare actual properties. There is no single midpoint that works equally well for every reporting location or schedule.
What are good options for a free afternoon?
Choose a focused destination such as Fort McAllister or Harris Neck, subject to current access and conditions. Reserve a broader Savannah visit for a day when you can walk and explore without rushing back to meet a reporting obligation.
