Overview
JBER is where Alaska's military comes together. The 673d Air Base Wing runs the installation and supports three Air Force wings, two Army brigades, and more than 70 tenant units across 73,000 acres, including the 3rd Wing's F-22s and C-17s, the 176th Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard, and the Army's 11th Airborne Division, reactivated in 2022 as the service's Arctic response force. Layer on Alaskan Command, Alaskan NORAD Region, and 11th Air Force headquarters, and you get a base that generates staff TDYs all year and floods with aircrews and soldiers every time Red Flag-Alaska or Northern Edge kicks off. More than 40,000 military-affiliated people live in the area, better than 10 percent of Anchorage.
Anchorage itself is a real city of about 290,000 pressed between Cook Inlet and the Chugach Mountains, and the base is literally its northern boundary. What matters to a TDY traveler here is light and cold: 19 hours of daylight in June, about 5.5 hours in December, an average January high around 23°F, and 75-plus inches of snow a year. Summer is bright, mild, and expensive because the cruise ships are in; winter is dark, icy, and cheap. Plan your gear, your rental car, and your lodging around which one you're getting.
Weather
Anchorage averages a January high near 23°F and low around 11°F, a July high around 66°F, and roughly 75-78 inches of snow a year. Daylight swings from about 19 hours in mid-June to about 5.5 hours in mid-December.
Best months
June through August for long days and 60s; late February through March for sunny, snow-covered winter with returning light.
Tough months
November through January: short days, ice on every road, and the Glenn Highway commute stretches when it snows. Breakup (late March-April) is muddy and gray.
Getting there
- Fly into Ted Stevens Anchorage International (ANC) on the southwest side of town; it's about a 20-25 minute drive to the Boniface Gate via Minnesota Drive and the Glenn Highway or Boniface Parkway. Reserve a rental car before you fly, especially May-September when tourist demand empties the lots, and ask for winter tires from October on. Single Army soldiers can request a designated reception ride from the airport.
- Boniface Gate (Elmendorf side, off Boniface Parkway) and Richardson Gate (Richardson side, off the Glenn Highway) are the 24-hour gates. Muldoon Gate is a limited-hours commuter gate, open roughly early morning to late evening on weekdays with later weekend openings, and other gates open on shift schedules. Confirm current hours on the 673d Security Forces Squadron page before you commit to a route.
- Visitor Control Centers sit at both 24-hour gates. The Boniface VCC is the primary one, open daily from early morning to late evening; the Richardson VCC keeps weekday business hours. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, registration, and proof of insurance if you're driving someone else's car; anyone without a DoD ID needs a pass or a sponsor. Confirm hours on the JBER site, since they shift seasonally.
- Traffic is light by Lower 48 standards, but the Glenn Highway between Eagle River and the Richardson Gate backs up on weekday mornings and any time it snows. Moose on the road are a genuine hazard in winter, and Anchorage rarely closes for weather, so learn to drive on packed snow and ice.

The crashpad option
We're expanding at JB Elmendorf-Richardson. If you have TDY dates for Anchorage, tell us your window, gate, and how many teammates are coming, and we'll let you know what we can open up. Our crashpads are furnished, priced inside the government rate, and come with DTS-ready receipts.
JB Elmendorf-Richardson crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Aurora Military Housing is JBER's privatized partner, managing 3,262 family homes across 19 neighborhoods on both sides of the base; leasing office 907-753-1023, with an online waitlist.
- Off base in 2026, Anchorage apartments average roughly $1,500 a month with two-bedrooms around $1,550-1,630, and Eagle River two-bedrooms run about $1,600-1,900.
- Eagle River homes sold for a median near $419,000 in spring 2026; South Anchorage hillside homes run higher, and the Mat-Su Valley is the value play if you'll accept the drive.
BAH 2026 · MHA AK404
| Grade | With dependents | Without dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $2,874 | $2,157 |
| O-3 | $3,360 | $2,643 |
- 2026 BAH for MHA AK404 (Anchorage) is approximately $2,874 with dependents and $2,157 without for an E-5, and approximately $3,360 with dependents and $2,643 without for an O-3, per published 2026 tables, up 4.9 percent from 2025.
- Alaska also pays COLA on top of BAH.
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
Eagle River
The classic JBER family town: suburban, mountain-backed, with strong Anchorage School District schools and the bulk of the base's off-post families, at the price of a Glenn Highway commute that doubles when it snows.
East Anchorage / Muldoon
Closest to the Boniface and Muldoon gates, with older split-levels and condos, a mixed-income feel, and the shortest drive on base, so it's the pick for TDY crashpads and dual-military couples who value minutes over square footage.
Midtown / Downtown Anchorage
Apartments, breweries, the Coastal Trail, and the airport within reach; commute is easy on Boniface Parkway or the Glenn, and it's the best choice for single members who want a city instead of a cul-de-sac.
South Anchorage / Hillside
Newer homes on the Chugach foothills near O'Malley and Huffman with trailheads out the back door and some of the district's top-rated schools, but $425,000-600,000-plus prices and a 25-35 minute drive across town.
Chugiak / Peters Creek
Just past Eagle River and noticeably more rural, with acreage, quiet, and moose in the yard, trading extra highway miles for space that Anchorage proper can't offer.
Wasilla / Palmer (Mat-Su Valley)
Homes in the $275,000-375,000 range and a big-sky Valley lifestyle, but a 45-60 minute Glenn Highway commute that turns into a real slog in winter storms.
Schools & childcare
- JBER has five on-base elementary schools run by the Anchorage School District: Aurora, Mount Spurr, Orion, Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor. Middle and high school students in base housing ride buses to ASD schools off the installation, so check your specific zoned school when you pick a neighborhood.
- The Anchorage School District is one of the largest in the country and serves Anchorage, Eagle River, and Chugiak; Eagle River High and South Anchorage High are perennial family favorites. Homeschool and charter options are strong, and Mat-Su Borough School District covers Wasilla and Palmer.
- The JBER School Liaison Office is in Bldg 600 on Richardson Drive, 907-384-1505; start there before you sign a lease, and ask about the Interstate Compact if you're mid-year.
- Child Development Centers operate on both sides of the base, and waitlists run months in summer PCS season. Register on MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders, and ask the Military & Family Readiness Center (907-552-4943) about Family Child Care homes in Aurora housing as a backup.
Healthcare
- The 673d Medical Group runs the JBER hospital at 5955 Zeamer Avenue, a full inpatient hospital with a 24/7 emergency department, surgery, OB, and a wide specialty mix. Appointment line 907-580-2778, weekdays 6:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; confirm on elmendorfrichardson.tricare.mil. The Alaska VA also runs its clinic inside the JBER hospital campus.
- For emergencies, the JBER ED is the closest option from base and East Anchorage. Off base, Providence Alaska Medical Center and Alaska Regional Hospital in Midtown are the big civilian ERs, and there's a Level II trauma center at Providence.
- TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance. Alaska has a thin network of specialists, so expect some referrals to Seattle or elsewhere in the Lower 48.

On base
- Commissary
Commissaries on both the Elmendorf and Richardson sides; expect higher prices than the Lower 48 but still well under Anchorage grocery stores.
- Exchange
Main Exchange and food court on the Elmendorf side, plus a Richardson-side PX and Shoppettes with gas near each gate.
- Fitness
Elmendorf Fitness Center (9510 22nd St) and Buckner Fitness Center on the Richardson side, which has an indoor track, rock wall, racquetball, and two pools including the Polar Paradise family pool.
- Dining
Iditarod DFAC (Elmendorf side) and Wilderness Inn DFAC (Richardson side); check jberlife.com for hours, which change with exercises and holidays.
- MWR
Outdoor Recreation rents everything from skis to boats, runs guided trips, and has the JBER-E FAMCAMP; there's also a ski hill, bowling, and the Arctic Warrior Events Center.
- Newcomers
Military & Family Readiness Center, 8535 Wewak Drive, 907-552-4943; Army reception 907-903-4281; jberlife.com is the FSS hub for everything on the installation.
Off duty

Flattop and Chugach State Park
Flattop Mountain at Glen Alps, about 30 minutes south of base, is Alaska's most-climbed peak and a two-hour round trip with views of Denali on a clear day. The rest of Chugach State Park, half a million acres, starts at the base fence: Eagle River Nature Center, Arctic Valley, and the Thunderbird Falls trail are all under 30 minutes away.

Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
Eleven paved miles from downtown to Kincaid Park along Cook Inlet, 20 minutes from the Boniface Gate. Run or bike it in summer, fat-bike or classic-ski it in winter, and expect moose. Kincaid's singletrack and Nordic trails are the city's playground.

Anchorage Museum
Downtown at 7th and C, the museum's Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center and Alaska history galleries are the best single afternoon on Alaska, and the planetarium is a good winter escape. First Fridays are free after 6 p.m.

Alaska Native Heritage Center
Five minutes from the Muldoon Gate on the Glenn Highway, the Heritage Center's outdoor village sites and dance performances cover all of Alaska's Indigenous cultures. Open daily in summer, limited hours in winter.

Alyeska Resort and Girdwood
Forty-five minutes south along the Seward Highway through Turnagain Arm, Alyeska is Alaska's biggest ski area with 2,500 vertical feet and a tram that runs in summer for hiking. Stop at Beluga Point on the drive to watch for whales and bore tides.
Official site ↗Portage Glacier and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
An hour south, the Wildlife Conservation Center at Portage lets you see bears, musk oxen, and wood bison up close, and the Portage Glacier boat tour runs from Memorial Day to mid-September. Add the Whittier tunnel for a day trip to Prince William Sound.
Official site ↗Alaska Railroad and Seward
The railroad's Coastal Classic leaves downtown Anchorage early and puts you in Seward for a Kenai Fjords glacier cruise the same day; drive it instead (2.5 hours) if you want to fish silvers off the beach in August. Talkeetna, 2 hours north, is the Denali flightseeing base.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Winter here isn't the cold so much as the ice and the dark. Pack traction cleats for your boots, a headlamp, and a real parka; the base doesn't close for snow, and December daylight is about 5.5 hours.
- 02Book the North Star Inn the day your orders drop if you're coming for Red Flag-Alaska or Northern Edge. Exercises fill both sides of the base, and you want the non-availability number early so you can lock commercial lodging before summer rates hit.
- 03Rental cars sell out in Anchorage from May through September. Reserve at ANC weeks ahead, and if you're here October-April ask for studded or winter tires; all-seasons on the Glenn Highway at 10°F is a bad plan.
- 04JBER is two bases with one fence. Elmendorf side (flight line, hospital, main BX) and Richardson side (Army units, Buckner) are a 10-15 minute drive apart, so pick lodging or a crashpad near the gate you'll actually use.
- 05Moose are everywhere on base and in East Anchorage, including on the running trails. Give them 50 feet, never get between a cow and a calf, and slow down on base roads at dusk.
- 06Summer daylight wrecks sleep. Bring a sleep mask or stay somewhere with blackout curtains; the sun sets around midnight in June and is back up before 4:30 a.m.
- 07Alaska has no state income tax or sales tax in Anchorage, and residents get the Permanent Fund Dividend after a full calendar year. PCS families: file for residency and the PFD as soon as you're eligible, and update DEERS and TRICARE West enrollment on arrival.
- 08Aurora housing has a real waitlist in summer PCS season. Get on it at auroramilitaryhousing.com before you arrive, and have a two-month plan for TLF or a furnished rental in case your home isn't ready.
