Overview
JB Charleston is AMC's C-17 powerhouse. The 437th Airlift Wing and its Reserve partner the 315th fly more than 50 Globemaster IIIs from a runway they share with Charleston International Airport, while the 628th Air Base Wing hosts 67 organizations across two campuses: the Air Base on Dorchester Road and the Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek. Active duty strength sits around 11,500 with a total force near 14,000, and the Navy side adds Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, NIWC Atlantic, and a set of moored training submarines. Aircrew, aerial porters, maintainers, nuclear students, and civilian engineers cycle through constantly. Note that the installation was officially renamed Joint Base Lindsey Graham on August 10, 2026; locals, orders, and most signage still say JB Charleston.
The place is Charleston, South Carolina, about 10 miles from the historic peninsula. That means Lowcountry heat, a wet summer, a real hurricane season, and a tourist economy that pushes hotel rates well above what most TDY travelers expect. For a TDY traveler the practical questions are which gate is open when you land at midnight, how to get a room at the Inns, and where to sleep when per diem is $218 but the hotel wants $300. This guide covers all of it.
Weather
Charleston AFB averages a 91°F high and 73°F low in July with about 51 inches of rain a year, most of it in summer downpours (August alone averages over 7 inches). January runs 59°F highs and 38°F lows, with frost rare and snow rarer.
Best months
October through early December and March through May
Tough months
June through September for heat, humidity, and afternoon storms; August through October is peak hurricane risk, and low-lying roads flood in heavy rain and king tides.
Getting there
- Fly into Charleston International (CHS). The base literally shares the runway with the airport: take the airport access road to Michaux Parkway, turn onto Dorchester Road, and the main gate is about 1.5 miles on the right. Rental cars are on site at the terminal; you will want one, because there is no practical transit between the Air Base, the Weapons Station, and downtown.
- Rivers Gate (north, off Rivers Avenue near I-26 in Hanahan) and Hunley Gate (west, also just off I-26) are open 24/7. The Dorchester Gate, the main gate closest to the airport, runs 0500-2100 daily, and the Commissary Gate is outbound only, Monday through Friday 0900-2000. Weapons Station gates have their own schedules. Confirm current hours on the 628th Security Forces page before a late arrival.
- The Visitor Control Center sits at the Dorchester Gate and handles passes for anyone without a CAC or DoD ID. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance; hours have changed over the years, so check the base site or call the base operator at 843-963-1110 before you bring a visitor. The Weapons Station quarterdeck is reachable 24 hours at 843-794-7000.
- I-26 is the artery for everything and it backs up hard from 0700-0900 and 1600-1800, especially inbound from Summerville. Rivers Avenue (US-52) is the slower but steadier alternate. Downtown Charleston traffic and parking get worse during spring festival season and summer weekends, so leave early if you are coming from the peninsula.

The crashpad option
Base Crashpads has three homes serving JB Charleston, each 15 to 25 minutes from the gates: Southern Charm (2 bed), Palmetto Oaks (4 bed / 3 bath, 2,300 sq ft), and Carolina Pines (4 bed / 3 bath, 2,350 sq ft). All are priced inside the Charleston lodging rate with DTS-ready receipts, full kitchens, laundry, and dedicated parking. The 4-bedroom homes work well for a crew or a class splitting a house.
JB Charleston crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing

- Family housing is privatized on both campuses: Hunt Military Communities runs about 600 homes in two Air Base neighborhoods including Hunley Park (leasing 864-305-1265, 1501 Touhey Blvd), and Balfour Beatty manages the Weapons Station's four neighborhoods with 2, 3, and 4-bedroom homes (leasing 843-797-5631).
- The government Military Housing Office is at 101 North Davis Drive on the Air Base (843-963-3858) and 742 Fletcher Street on the Weapons Station (843-794-7218), open Monday through Friday 0700-1530.
- Off base, RentCafe put the metro average at about $2,137 in August 2026, with 3-bedrooms averaging $2,592 in Charleston proper but far less in Hanahan (~$1,407), Summerville (~$1,717), and Goose Creek (~$1,748).
- Home prices average around $420,000 metro-wide, and inventory in the mid-$300s moves quickly.
BAH 2026
| Grade | With dependents | Without dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $2,385 | $1,941 |
| O-3 | $2,721 | $2,529 |
- 2026 BAH for the Charleston, SC MHA is approximately $2,385 with dependents and $1,941 without for an E-5, and $2,721 with dependents and $2,529 without for an O-3, per published 2026 tables.
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
Hanahan
The closest bedroom community to the Rivers and Hunley gates, with older brick ranches and newer townhomes, Berkeley County schools (Hanahan High is well regarded), and rents that undercut the rest of the metro.
Goose Creek
The Weapons Station's front yard: affordable subdivisions like Crowfield, Berkeley County schools, and a straight shot to NNPTC, with the Air Base 15 to 20 minutes down I-26 or Rivers Avenue.
Summerville / Nexton / Cane Bay
Where most PCS families with kids end up, for Dorchester District 2 schools and new-build neighborhoods with pools and sidewalks, but the I-26 commute is real and grows every year.
Park Circle (North Charleston)
Walkable 1940s bungalows, breweries, and restaurants five minutes from the Dorchester Gate; popular with single aircrew and dual-mil couples, though prices have climbed with the buzz.
West Ashley / Mount Pleasant
Bigger budgets and beach access: West Ashley is the value side of Charleston proper on Dorchester Road, while Mount Pleasant and Daniel Island bring top-tier schools, Shem Creek, and a 30-plus-minute crossing of the Cooper River.
Schools & childcare
- No on-base schools. Air Base housing (Hunley Park) is zoned to Charleston County School District; Weapons Station housing in Goose Creek falls under Berkeley County School District.
- Three districts serve base families: Charleston County (CCSD), Dorchester District 2 (Summerville, the most sought-after by military families), and Berkeley County (Goose Creek, Hanahan, Moncks Corner). South Carolina runs a Purple Star program; check each district's site for current designated schools and magnet options.
- The School Liaison Officer is at 843-963-4438 and can walk you through zoning, transfers, and the Interstate Compact before you sign a lease.
- The base Child Development Center serves ages 6 weeks to five years, and there are CDC and youth programs on both campuses. Request care at MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders; infant slots in the Lowcountry carry long waits.
Healthcare
- Naval Health Clinic Charleston, 110 NNPTC Circle in Goose Creek, is the MTF for the whole joint base and serves about 12,000 enrollees plus 5,000 nuclear students. It is clinic-only with no emergency room; central appointments 843-794-6221, main line 843-794-6001, sick call from 0545 for active duty. There is also a branch health clinic on the Air Base for flight medicine and primary care.
- Emergencies go to Trident Medical Center (321 beds, 9330 Medical Plaza Drive, North Charleston, about 10 minutes from the Air Base) or Roper St. Francis facilities; MUSC downtown is the Level I trauma center. Urgent care options line Rivers Avenue and Dorchester Road.
- JB Charleston is in the TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military; the MHS Nurse Advice Line is 800-TRICARE (874-2273) around the clock.

- Commissary
Charleston AFB Commissary on the Air Base with Click2Go curbside pickup; a second commissary serves the Weapons Station.

- Signature event
The Charleston Airshow returns every couple of years with C-17 demos and the Thunderbirds; Freedom Fest and 'Chillin @ The Lake' at Short Stay round out the FSS calendar.
Off duty

Downtown Charleston
Ten miles down I-26 is one of America's best walking cities: Rainbow Row, the Battery, King Street, and the City Market. Go on a weeknight; weekend parking is brutal and hotel-priced. Poogan's Porch and Halls Chophouse are the classic splurges.

Patriots Point and the USS Yorktown
Across the Cooper River in Mount Pleasant, about 25 minutes, the Essex-class carrier Yorktown, a destroyer, a submarine, and a Vietnam-era exhibit fill a full afternoon. Military discounts at the gate, and ITT sells tickets.

Fort Sumter
Where the Civil War started. The ferry leaves from Liberty Square downtown or Patriots Point and the round trip takes about two and a half hours. Book ahead on summer weekends.

Folly Beach and Isle of Palms
Folly is the laid-back surf town 35 minutes south with a fishing pier and taco stands; Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island, 35 minutes east, are quieter with wider sand. Sunrise runs on either beat the Lowcountry heat.
Official site ↗The H.L. Hunley
The world's first successful combat submarine sits in a conservation tank on the old Navy base in North Charleston, 10 minutes from the Air Base, with weekend tours. The Hunley Gate is named for it.
Wikipedia ↗Park Circle and Firefly
North Charleston's Park Circle has breweries (Commonhouse, Holy City) and a bar-and-restaurant loop five minutes from the main gate; Firefly Distillery nearby makes the sweet tea vodka. Frankie's Fun Park on Ashley Phosphate is the go-to for kids.
Wikipedia ↗Angel Oak and the Lowcountry
The 400-plus-year-old Angel Oak on Johns Island is 40 minutes away and worth the drive. Add a kayak tour of Shem Creek or the ACE Basin, or a Short Stay cabin weekend on Lake Moultrie through Outdoor Rec.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Hurricane season runs June through November, with August through October the danger window. Know the base evacuation policy, keep a go-bag and a full tank, and watch the 628th ABW Facebook page; Hugo in 1989 is still the benchmark storm here.
- 02Charleston floods in ordinary heavy rain. Downtown crosstown, parts of Dorchester Road, and low neighborhoods near the Ashley go under during king tides; do not drive through standing water, and check your rental's parking spot elevation.
- 03Landing after 2100? Skip the Dorchester Gate. Rivers and Hunley are 24/7 and both sit right off I-26, which is also the easier route from most crashpads and hotels.
- 04Per diem swings $70 a night with the season ($218 in winter, $288 in spring). Book the Inns 60 days out for March through May TDYs and get your non-availability number early; hotels near the airport routinely quote above the rate during festival season.
- 05PCS families: Dorchester District 2 in Summerville is the draw, but the I-26 commute is 25 to 35 minutes on a good day. Hanahan and Goose Creek trade a little school prestige for 15 minutes back every morning.
- 06Summer here is 91 degrees with 70-plus dew points. Pack light uniforms, a rain shell for the 3 pm storm, and bug spray for the marsh mosquitoes and no-see-ums that own the dusk.
- 07The Air Base and the Weapons Station are 20 to 30 minutes apart with no shuttle. Put the right campus on your orders and pick lodging on the correct side of I-26.
- 08Get on the MilitaryChildCare.com list and the Hunt or Balfour Beatty housing list the day orders drop; both run waitlists that can stretch months in the summer PCS surge.
