Overview

Keesler is AETC's electronics schoolhouse. The 81st Training Wing runs nearly 500 courses in cyber, communications, air traffic control, weather, and financial management, with roughly 3,100 students on base at any moment and more than 28,000 cycling through each year. Headquarters Second Air Force, the Reserve's 403rd Wing (home of the Hurricane Hunters), and a Navy/Marine training unit share the fence line.

The base sits inside Biloxi city limits on the Mississippi Sound, which means beaches, casinos, and seafood are ten minutes away — and so are humidity, afternoon thunderstorms, and a hurricane season that the base takes very seriously. For TDY cadre and follow-on students, the practical questions are simple: can you get a room at the Inns, how long is the bridge commute, and what does per diem actually buy here.

Weather

Humid subtropical Gulf Coast: summer highs near 90°F with humidity in the 75% range and near-daily afternoon storms. Winters are mild (January highs around 60°F) with short cold snaps.

Best months

Tough months

Getting there

  • Gulfport-Biloxi International (GPT) is about 11 miles and 20–25 minutes from the base with American, Delta, United, Allegiant, and Sun Country service. New Orleans (MSY) is 1.5–2 hours west and often cheaper. Rent a car or ride-share — the base shuttle only runs on base during duty hours.
  • White Avenue Gate (the main gate, at Division St) and Pass Road Gate are 24/7. Meadows Drive Gate runs weekdays 0530–1800. The Commercial Vehicle Gate keeps weekday business hours — confirm before scheduling deliveries.
  • Visitor Control Center: White Avenue Gate, 310 M St, Bldg 4605, (228) 377-3844, weekdays only. Published hours have varied — call ahead. Trusted Traveler was suspended in January 2025, so every occupant 15 and up needs a DoD ID or a visitor pass; after hours, sponsors meet guests in person at White Avenue for a handwritten pass.
  • Cell phone use while driving on base is prohibited and enforced. Speed limits and the student crossings near the tech-training complex are strict.

TLF (families)
Available
  • Inns of Keesler (Air Force Inns), check-in at Tyer House, 405 Fisher St, Bldg 470 — (228) 374-0088, front desk 24/7.
  • About 600 rooms across VQ, VAQ, DVQ, and TLF buildings.
  • Book on af.dodlodging.net; if you'll arrive after 6 p.m., call with a card to hold the room.
  • Students on dual orders should say so when booking.
  • Pipeline tech-training students live in dorms, not the Inns.

Off-base per diem

  • Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
  • No current rate is quoted here.
  • Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
  • A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.

The crashpad option

Demand at Keesler is exactly why we're expanding in Biloxi. If the Inns issue you a non-availability number, a furnished house inside the $110 rate — with a real kitchen and a desk for the evening study grind — beats a Highway 90 hotel. Send us your report and departure dates and we'll match you with an opening or a vetted option near the gates.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Hunt Military Communities runs about 1,028 privatized homes: Bayridge (officers and senior NCOs, on Biloxi Bay) plus East Falcon, West Falcon, and Thrower Park for junior enlisted — the four neighborhoods sit just outside the fence behind ID-card gates.
  • The Housing Management Office (500 Fisher St, Rm 204, (228) 376-8614) runs a rental partnership program that waives deposits and application fees at participating complexes.
  • Off base, Biloxi one-bedrooms average roughly $1,050 and two-bedrooms about $1,225; Ocean Springs runs $930–$1,150 and Gulfport is cheaper.
  • With median home prices near $235,000 in Biloxi and $185,000 in Gulfport, buying on BAH is often competitive with renting.

BAH 2026 · MHA MS168

GradeWith dependentsWithout dependents
E-5$1,602$1,365
O-3$2,040$1,623
  • 2026 BAH for MHA MS168 (Gulfport): approximately $1,602 with dependents / $1,365 without for an E-5, and $2,040 / $1,623 for an O-3, per published 2026 tables.
  • Gulfport ranks among the lower-cost MHAs nationally.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator before signing a lease.
NeighborhoodCommute

West Biloxi / near-base

Closest option — older military-era neighborhoods and post-Katrina rebuilds minutes from the beach and casinos, but much of it sits in the coastal flood plain; price the flood insurance first.

Commute: ~10 min

Ocean Springs

The perennial family favorite: a walkable arts-and-restaurant downtown, a well-regarded school district, waterfront parks — and the Biloxi Bay Bridge every single day.

Commute: ~20 min

D'Iberville / North Biloxi

Newer subdivisions and larger lots north of I-10, generally outside the worst flood zones, with an I-110 straight shot to base. School quality varies more than Ocean Springs.

Commute: ~18 min

Gulfport

The coast's largest city with the widest rental range, the Mississippi Aquarium, and NCBC Gulfport for dual-military couples; the Pass Road / Hwy 90 commute is the price of admission.

Commute: ~30 min

Long Beach / Pass Christian

Quieter beach towns west of Gulfport with small-town schools and lower rents, for families who don't mind a longer coastal drive.

Commute: ~40 min

Schools & childcare

  • No on-base schools. Base-housing kids attend Biloxi Public Schools: Back Bay Elementary (Bayridge, East/West Falcon, TLF) or Popp's Ferry Elementary (Thrower Park), then Biloxi Upper Elementary, Biloxi Junior High, and Biloxi High. Biloxi schools have designated military liaisons.
  • Off base, districts include Biloxi, Harrison County, Gulfport, Ocean Springs, Jackson County, and Long Beach. Ocean Springs is the district families cross the bridge for.
  • School Liaison: Sablich Center, 500 Fisher St, Bldg 0701, Rm 110, (228) 376-8728 — registration, zoning, gifted and special-education referrals, and Interstate Compact issues. Local calendars run August to May.
  • Childcare: Child Development Center (Bldg 308, J St) and Family Child Care for ages 0–5; the Youth Center runs school-age care and before/after-school programs for several area schools. Request care on MilitaryChildCare.com as early as possible; Give Parents a Break offers referral-based respite care. Program info: (228) 377-2211.
06

Healthcare

  • Keesler Medical Center (81st Medical Group), 301 Fisher St — one of the Air Force's largest medical facilities, with about 60 inpatient beds, a 24/7 emergency department, and broad specialty care for roughly 27,000 enrollees.
  • Appointment line 800-700-8603; ED front desk (228) 376-4015; Nurse Advice Line 800-874-2273.
  • Mississippi is in the TRICARE East Region (Humana Military). Update DEERS and your PCM on arrival.

Ship Island day trip

Take the Ship Island Excursions ferry from Gulfport Yacht Harbor out to West Ship Island in Gulf Islands National Seashore: clear Gulf water, Civil War-era Fort Massachusetts, and real swimming the mainland's brown-water Sound can't match. Ferries run March through early November; military tickets are discounted.

Ocean Springs downtown

Cross the bridge for Washington Avenue's galleries, coffee, and restaurants, then the Walter Anderson Museum of Art. Front Beach and the Davis Bayou unit of the National Seashore are minutes away. The Peter Anderson Festival in early November is the coast's biggest arts fair.

Casino row and Shuckers baseball

Beau Rivage anchors a strip that includes Hard Rock, Golden Nugget, and Harrah's — concerts, buffets, pools. Next door, the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers play at Keesler Federal Park with discounted military seating.

Biloxi Lighthouse and Point Cadet

Climb the 1848 lighthouse on a guided tour, then the Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum beside the bay bridge to understand why this is the Seafood Capital. Oysters or a po'boy on Point Cadet, then the Hwy 90 beach at sunset.

Mississippi Aquarium and Gulfport

The aquarium in downtown Gulfport is a strong rainy-day (or heat-index-day) stop with military discounts. Pair it with Jones Park on the harbor and Gulfport's rebuilt downtown food scene.

New Orleans and Mobile

New Orleans is about 90 miles west on I-10 — French Quarter, the National WWII Museum, Mardi Gras. Mobile is an hour east for the USS Alabama. Bay St. Louis, a quiet artsy beach town, is a 45-minute run west.

Cruisin' the Coast

Every early October, thousands of classic cars roll up and down Hwy 90 for a week from Biloxi to Bay St. Louis. Great free spectacle, terrible traffic — plan around it.

Insider tips

  1. 01Bring rain gear and a second pair of shoes. Summer storms hit most afternoons, and Pass Road and the low spots around base flood fast.
  2. 02Hurricane season is real here — Katrina put half the base under water in 2005. Keep a go-bag, know your evacuation route, and watch base social media from June through November; housing residents can be ordered to evacuate or shelter.
  3. 03Hwy 90 and the Biloxi Bay Bridge crawl at rush hour and during Cruisin' the Coast, Mardi Gras parades, spring break, and big casino concerts. Ocean Springs commuters: budget 30 minutes some days.
  4. 04Trusted Traveler is suspended. Get visitors sponsored during weekday Visitor Center hours, or plan to meet them in person at the White Avenue Gate.
  5. 05Tech-training students: Phase 1 means roughly two weeks on base in uniform with a 2200 curfew. Don't book anything off base until you know your phase, and tell family not to visit the first couple of weeks.
  6. 06Register for Hunt housing and MilitaryChildCare.com the day orders arrive — both run waitlists, and the four privatized neighborhoods sit outside the fence with their own ID gates.
  7. 07Mainland beaches are brown-water Mississippi Sound, not Florida-clear. For swimming, take the Ship Island ferry or drive two hours to Orange Beach / Gulf Shores. Pack bug spray for the bayou parks.
  8. 08Cell phones behind the wheel on base get you stopped. Hands off, every time.

FAQ

What airport should I fly into, and how do I get to base?
Gulfport-Biloxi International (GPT) is about 11 miles and 20–25 minutes from the base. New Orleans (MSY) is 1.5–2 hours west and often cheaper. Ride-share or a rental car is the practical answer; the base shuttle only runs on base during duty hours.
Can TDY travelers stay off base if the Inns of Keesler are full?
Yes. If the Inns can't house you, the front desk issues a non-availability number and you lodge on the economy up to the FY2026 rate — $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE for Biloxi. Confirm space by phone up to three days before arrival.
Where do most families live, and how long is the commute?
Ocean Springs for schools and lifestyle at about 20 minutes with the bridge; D'Iberville and north Biloxi for newer construction and an easy I-110 drive; Biloxi itself is closest but more flood-exposed; Gulfport and Long Beach are cheaper at 30–40 minutes. Hunt's on-base housing is a solid option with about 1,000 homes and no bridge.
Is there a hospital on base?
Yes. Keesler Medical Center is a full inpatient hospital with a 24/7 emergency department and extensive specialty care — one of the largest in the Air Force. Enrollment falls under TRICARE East; the appointment line is 800-700-8603.
