Lodging

Transient personnel typically check in at the Cherry Point Inn, Building 487 on Madison Drive, which offers queen-bed rooms, Wi-Fi throughout the building, and standard amenities like refrigerators, microwaves, and complimentary laundry facilities.

Billeting operates 24/7, and while PCS orders get no special priority over other travelers, it's worth calling ahead since a non-availability chit is issued when quarters are full, allowing use of off-base lodging instead.

The Cherry Point Inn sits near other on-base recreational lodging and marina facilities, including Hancock Lodge and Pelican Point RV Park, making the immediate area a hub for both official travelers and those pursuing outdoor recreation on base property.

Housing & nearby communities

Family housing aboard Cherry Point is managed through the Family Housing Office in Building 496, across from the Cherry Point Inn, and privatized housing is operated by Hunt Military Communities under the Atlantic Marine Corps Communities banner.

Applying for base housing requires submitting a DD Form 1746 along with PCS orders and dependency documentation to the Housing Department well before detaching from a prior duty station, so it pays to start that paperwork early if quarters aboard the station are a priority.

For those renting or buying in the surrounding community, the Housing Referral Office maintains listings of local rentals and homes for sale and can help resolve landlord disputes, while a Self-Help Center supplies basic maintenance items like curtain rods and cabinet hinges for residents of both government and off-base housing.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

06

Choosing a nearby community

Havelock: the air station’s immediate community

Havelock is the Craven County city associated with MCAS Cherry Point and is a natural place to begin the search. Compare the exact property with the gate and work location you will use. Ask about a suitable sleep environment, cooling, laundry and internet, especially if duty hours vary. A home that keeps ordinary errands and the work route manageable can be more useful for a long assignment than a property chosen mainly for weekend access to the coast.

New Bern: a separate historic-city setting

New Bern sits at the meeting of the Neuse and Trent rivers and has a historic city center. It provides a different residential and cultural setting from Havelock. Compare the daily drive to Cherry Point with what a particular home offers your household. Older or centrally located properties can have different parking and stair arrangements, so ask for details. A city you enjoy visiting should still be assessed as a place to return after every workday.

Morehead City: toward the Crystal Coast

Morehead City is a port city in Carteret County and part of the Crystal Coast region. It expands the search toward the coast and may suit a household with a particular reason to be there. Evaluate the full route to the air station, not just proximity to beaches or waterfront activities. Confirm availability for all required dates and the complete rental arrangement. A property marketed to seasonal visitors may need a different agreement for a multi-month military stay.

Schools & childcare

Families with school-age children can work with the Marine Corps School Liaison, based in Building 232 at 4th Avenue and E Street, who helps connect newcomers with information about local schools; appointments are encouraged.

Child and Youth Program resource and referral services are based out of Building 232 as well, giving families a starting point for exploring child care information connected to the installation.

08

Healthcare

The Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point, located on Beaufort Road in Building 4389, serves as the installation's primary-care facility, with Family Practice, Pediatrics, and Women's Health services available by appointment on weekdays.

Importantly, this clinic does not have an emergency room, so any emergency situation is handled through local ambulance services rather than on-station care.

Dental care for family members is handled in the local civilian community rather than on base, typically through the TRICARE Dental Program, which involves a monthly premium deducted from the sponsor's pay once enrolled.

09

Everyday services

Two on-base pets per household are allowed, provided they're registered with the Station Veterinarian at the Small Animal Clinic in Building 293 and kept under control at all times, a detail worth noting since lodging facilities themselves don't allow pets.

Prescription refills for Naval Health Clinic patients can be picked up at the back of the Main Exchange in Building 3918, a convenient stop to combine with regular shopping trips on base.

Off duty

Croatan National Forest

Croatan National Forest protects a coastal landscape with varied habitats in the region around Cherry Point. Choose a specific trail or recreation area using current Forest Service information rather than treating the forest as one compact attraction. Conditions and access can differ among locations. A planned short walk may fit a limited afternoon better than an ambitious route after a long duty week. Carry the supplies appropriate to the destination and leave enough time to return comfortably.

Fort Macon State Park

Fort Macon State Park on Bogue Banks combines a preserved coastal fort with a beach and maritime setting. It gives a visit to the Crystal Coast both historical and outdoor elements. Check current park and fort access before planning around a particular feature. Decide whether the focus is the fort, a walk or time at the shore so the day does not become rushed. It is a useful regional outing when you have more time than an ordinary after-work break.

Tryon Palace in New Bern

Tryon Palace and its associated history attractions offer a way to explore New Bern’s colonial and regional past. Check which buildings, gardens and exhibits are included in the current visitor options before choosing a ticket or itinerary. Allow time for interpretation instead of simply passing through the grounds. A visit can anchor a day in New Bern, leaving room for a walk and a meal without needing to add a separate coastal destination.

Making the most of a longer stay

Compare the Havelock–New Bern–coast tradeoff

The region offers three distinct orientations for a stay: close to the air station in Havelock, toward New Bern’s city setting or toward the Crystal Coast. Start with the daily duty location and then compare the actual benefits of the home. For families, add school, childcare and other recurring trips before deciding. A wider geographic search is helpful when it solves a real household need, not simply because the region has appealing destinations in several directions.

Support the aviation routine at home

Ask about the specific bedroom setting if sleep timing or aircraft activity matters to you. Confirm window coverings, internet and a place to work quietly. If sharing with another traveler, discuss schedules, vehicles and common areas before accepting the rental. Keep forest, history and coast outings flexible around the work week. A comfortable home should still be the right choice when training leaves little time for sightseeing.

Local tips

Because Cherry Point Inn does not allow pets and a lack of space won't excuse that rule, anyone bringing a pet on official travel should arrange boarding in advance rather than assuming an exception will be made.

Given the modest size of Havelock relative to the base population it supports, working with the Housing Referral Office early is worthwhile, since it maintains its own list of local rentals and sale listings that isn't always visible from national listing sites.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an emergency room at the base clinic?
No. The Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point provides primary care only; emergencies are handled by local ambulance services rather than on-site emergency treatment.
Which town should I start with for Cherry Point?
Havelock is the immediate community and a useful first comparison. New Bern and Morehead City add different settings, but each property needs a full-route evaluation. Choose based on the assignment and household routine rather than a general preference for city or coast.
Can I use a coastal vacation rental for the whole assignment?
Confirm the entire date range, complete price, inclusions and terms for any changes before deciding. A short-stay listing does not establish a suitable multi-month arrangement. Ask about workspace, laundry and other features needed for everyday duty life.
Are Croatan’s recreation areas all near one another?
No single forest marker describes every destination. Choose the specific trail or site and use current Forest Service information for access and conditions. A focused outing will fit a limited day off better than an unplanned drive between distant areas.
