Getting there
MCAS New River is reached via Highway 17 south from downtown Jacksonville, with driving directions provided for arrivals from both the north (via I-95 to I-40 East and Highway 24) and the south (via I-95 near Florence, SC, through Highway 76 and Highway 53).
The closest commercial airport is Albert Ellis Airport in Richlands, roughly 15 miles from the air station, reached by taking Airport Road onto Highway 111 (Catherine Lake Road) to Highway 24.

Lodging
There is no temporary lodging facility for service members with dependents located aboard MCAS New River itself.
Inns of the Corps, located on Holcomb Boulevard at Camp Lejeune, accepts reservations up to 30 days in advance for those on permanent change of station orders, which is useful to know when planning a multiweek TDY that may not qualify for the same booking window as a PCS move.
For single senior personnel, Bachelor Housing Quarters are headquartered in Building 705 aboard MCAS New River itself, available to SNCOs and above on a space-available basis, with amenities including daily maid service, a pool, and an exercise room.

Housing & nearby communities
All family housing at both Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River has been privatized since October 1, 2007, managed by two Public-Private Venture partners, Hunt Communities and Lincoln Military Housing.
Eligibility for family housing depends on rank and dependent status: company grade officers with a spouse only qualify for no more than a two-bedroom unit in the MCAS housing area, while other officer quarters have three or four bedrooms assigned according to family composition, and enlisted members receive a bedroom for each dependent other than a spouse.

What to look for in a furnished home
A home that fits your routine
Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.
Compare the full arrangement
Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.
Settle the important details early
For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.
Choosing a nearby community
Jacksonville: identify the New River side of the military community
Jacksonville is the Onslow County seat and the central city for a region with several Marine Corps locations. For a New River assignment, begin with the actual air station duty site rather than a generic Camp Lejeune map marker. Compare the property’s route, parking and indoor setup. A city-wide search can return homes useful for different installations, so a listing’s military-lodging label does not by itself establish that it fits New River.
Sneads Ferry: a coastal-side alternative
Sneads Ferry is an Onslow County community with roots as a fishing village and access toward the Topsail area. It can be worth comparing when a particular home or household preference makes the location attractive. Check the full trip to New River and any family destinations before choosing. Coastal access may be appealing on days off, but a home should also support the busiest workday. Confirm laundry, workspace and parking along with the complete rental terms.
Richlands: a different inland setting
Richlands is another Onslow County town within the Jacksonville region. It provides an inland comparison when looking for a different residential setting or household layout. Evaluate the full address and work route before deciding that additional space outweighs the travel involved. Ask which errands can be handled nearby and which require a trip elsewhere. A long stay benefits from a predictable routine, not simply a larger number of rooms on the listing.

Schools & childcare
The Marine Corps School Liaison for MCAS New River operates out of AS-120 White Street, Room 102, and serves as the point of contact for families navigating local school enrollment questions. Appointments can be scheduled directly through the school liaison's office rather than through a general base information line.
Child care resources are coordinated through the Marine Corps Child Care Resource & Referral office, located at the Child Development Center on Curtis Road aboard MCAS New River, which operates by appointment on weekdays. Families should contact this office directly to understand available child care options rather than assuming automatic enrollment.

Healthcare
The Medical/Dental Clinic aboard MCAS New River, known as the Marine Centered Medical Homeport, serves active-duty personnel only for routine appointments, physicals, acute care, and some specialty services; active-duty members must be in the proper uniform of the day for any clinic appointment.
Dependents and retirees are directed instead to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune at 100 Brewster Boulevard, which provides urgent care and the fuller range of appointments for the broader TRICARE-eligible population. This split between the on-base clinic and the Camp Lejeune medical center is an important distinction for families accompanying a service member on assignment.
Anyone moving to the area with TRICARE coverage should plan ahead for prescriptions and routine dental needs before traveling, since coverage options and dental authorization procedures can change based on location and duty status.

Everyday services
Utilities for off-base housing in the Jacksonville area are not managed centrally by the base; new residents are directed to a general online utility search tool by ZIP code to identify local providers and compare service options.
The Military Housing Office at Building TT-43 Inchon Street on Camp Lejeune handles both on-base housing applications and off-base rental referrals for MCAS New River personnel, reflecting the close administrative ties between the two installations for family support functions.

Off duty
Topsail Island
Topsail Island includes several coastal communities and beach areas, so choose the specific destination before leaving. The island’s road access and the location of your intended public beach point belong in the plan. Check current local conditions and parking information. A shore walk and a water activity require different decisions. Treat the island as a regional outing rather than assuming every coastal rental there is a convenient daily base for MCAS New River.
Hammocks Beach State Park
Hammocks Beach State Park near Swansboro includes mainland facilities and island areas, notably Bear Island. That distinction matters when planning transport and the amount of time needed. Use current North Carolina state-park information for ferry service, access and any closures. If your free time is limited, choose an activity that fits the available facilities rather than assuming an island visit can be added spontaneously. The coastal landscape makes a worthwhile focused outing when properly planned.
Beirut Memorial and the Jacksonville memorial setting
The Beirut Memorial near Camp Johnson commemorates the service members killed in the 1983 barracks bombing. It provides a meaningful connection to the local Marine Corps community and its history. Approach the visit as a place of remembrance, with time to read and reflect. Use the public visitor arrangements for the memorial area and distinguish them from access to neighboring military facilities. It can be a significant local stop without requiring an elaborate day-trip itinerary.

Making the most of a longer stay
Keep New River and Camp Lejeune destinations distinct
The installations share a broader community but are not one interchangeable daily address. Confirm where you will report and how often any secondary location is involved. Then compare Jacksonville, Sneads Ferry or Richlands properties against that schedule. If two travelers share a home but work at different sites, evaluate both commutes and parking needs. A property that looks central to the region may not be the most practical choice for either person.
Set up the home around the assignment
For an aviation-related stay, explain any irregular hours and ask about the bedroom environment, window coverings and quiet workspace. Confirm cooling, laundry and internet before accepting a property. Families should verify the exact school and childcare arrangements independently of the listing description. Keep coastal outings flexible around conditions and the duty week. A well-chosen home remains useful when the only free time available is enough for a meal and rest.

Local tips
Because MCAS New River has no dependent-friendly temporary lodging facility on-site, anyone bringing family for a training rotation should book Inns of the Corps at Camp Lejeune well ahead of arrival rather than assuming lodging will be available near the air station itself.
