Getting there

Yuma International Airport is the practical option for most travelers, sitting less than a mile from the air station itself.

By road, the Main Gate sits on Avenue 3E with direct access from Interstate 8, roughly 173 miles east of San Diego and 185 miles southwest of Phoenix.

Lodging

The Inns of the Corps temporary lodging facility, located at Building 1088 just two blocks inside the main gate, is the on-base lodging option for active duty members, families, retirees, and sponsored guests. It has 84 rooms total, including 48 with access to private patios and a shared grassy courtyard, and every room includes free WiFi.

Rooms come with kitchenettes featuring a microwave, refrigerator, and two-burner stove, which matters for anyone on a multiweek TDY who wants to cook rather than eat out every night. Pet-friendly rooms are available, and wheelchair-accessible rooms can be requested.

Housing & nearby communities

MCAS Yuma controls 821 government housing units in total: 693 located directly on the air station and an additional 128 apartment-style units at the 16th Street Family Housing complex, about seven miles from base.

Off-base renters work through the Housing Referral Office, which maintains updated rental listings roughly every six months and can help with landlord disputes or general questions about the local rental market.

If you do sign a local lease, ask specifically about a military clause allowing early termination for PCS orders or for a base-housing offer, since landlords are not obligated to include one.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

06

Choosing a nearby community

Yuma: start with the air station route

Yuma is the county seat and principal city of the surrounding region. Begin a housing search with the location of your work or course at MCAS Yuma, then compare the actual address of each property. A home’s cooling, sleep environment and parking deserve attention alongside the commute. For an aviation schedule, explain any need to rest during the day or work at unusual hours. A convenient city location should still provide the privacy and equipment needed for several months of ordinary living.

Fortuna Foothills: an eastern-area comparison

Fortuna Foothills is an unincorporated community in the Yuma region east of the city’s central areas. It offers another residential setting to compare when a specific home suits your needs. Check the full route to the air station and the services near the property before deciding. Ask about laundry, cooling and internet, as well as vehicle space. A wider search is useful when it produces a better-fitting home, not simply more options farther from the duty location.

Somerton: a separate community in the valley

Somerton is a separate Yuma County city with an economy connected to agriculture, services and tourism. It broadens the search beyond the city of Yuma and the Foothills. Consider it when a particular property or household requirement makes the location attractive, then evaluate the complete work route. Confirm the exact school and childcare arrangements if family is accompanying you. A regional city label should not replace an address-level comparison of daily life.

Schools & childcare

Families with school-age children can start with the Marine Corps School Liaison office, based at Building 693 on Hart, which serves as the point of contact for K-12 school questions in the area.

For younger children, the Marine Corps Resource and Referral office at Building 1071 on Martini Avenue is the local contact for child and youth program information and referrals.

Healthcare

The Marine Corps Branch Health Clinic on Hart Street provides outpatient care for active-duty members, with family members, retirees, and their dependents seen on an enrollment basis as staffing and resources allow. Clinic hours run 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, and the pharmacy follows the same schedule with a check-in kiosk that closes at 3:30 p.m. to allow time for processing.

Inpatient care for active-duty members is routed to Naval Medical Center San Diego or Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, while family members and retirees needing services unavailable at the branch clinic are referred into the local civilian network under TRICARE. The nearest emergency room is Onvida Health Emergency Yuma Medical Center, though follow-up with your primary care manager afterward is expected.

The on-base dental clinic serves active-duty members only, so family members needing dental care will use the TRICARE Dental Program network in town instead.

Everyday services

The Inns of the Corps lodging area sits near everyday conveniences including a laundry facility, the MCX, a library, and package pickup/drop-off through FedEx, UPS, and USPS, plus fax and copy services — handy for anyone staying an extended stretch without needing to leave base for basic errands.

A children's playground, barbecue grills, and a fitness center are also conveniently located near the lodging area, giving families or singles alike some easy recreation options within walking distance of their room.

Off duty

Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park

The former Yuma Territorial Prison preserves part of Arizona’s territorial-era history. It provides a focused local outing with exhibits and historic structures rather than requiring a long desert drive. Check current visiting arrangements and allow time to read the interpretation. The historic site is distinct from a modern correctional facility or an ordinary city park. It can be paired with a nearby public riverfront walk if the day’s conditions and available time make that comfortable.

Colorado River State Historic Park

Colorado River State Historic Park preserves the setting of the former Yuma Quartermaster Depot. Its history connects the river with the supply of military posts across the desert Southwest. That makes it particularly relevant to a military visitor interested in how the region developed. Check current exhibits and opening information before going. A visit provides a different perspective from the prison, so choose the site that matches your interests or explore them on separate days.

Imperial National Wildlife Refuge

Imperial National Wildlife Refuge protects Colorado River habitat across parts of Arizona and California. It offers a nature-focused regional outing, but the specific access point and activity need to be chosen in advance. Use current U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service information for public areas, road conditions and restrictions. Do not assume every river bank or road is open for recreation. Plan supplies and return time around the actual route rather than the refuge’s broad name on a map.

Making the most of a longer stay

Make the indoor environment a priority

For a Yuma assignment, ask about the property’s cooling, bedroom location, window coverings and maintenance contact before choosing. A usable kitchen, laundry and a real work surface can make the daily routine easier. If sharing, confirm separate sleeping space and agree on common-room use when schedules differ. A home’s outdoor features are a bonus only if the indoor setup supports rest and study during the busiest part of the assignment.

Explore the river and history in manageable visits

Yuma’s historic sites provide a way to get to know the region without making every day off a long excursion. Start with one focused visit and keep larger refuge or desert trips for a period with more time. Use current conditions to choose when and where to spend time outdoors. For the weekday routine, locate groceries, fuel and other regular errands along the route that already works for duty rather than adding unnecessary trips.

Local tips

If you're driving in on I-8, know your gate: from Exit 3 (Avenue 3E), the Main Gate is at the sixth signal, while the North Gate at the fifth signal is for commercial vehicles only.

Because rental housing tightens up considerably during the Winter Visitor season, anyone job-hunting for off-base housing between October and April should start early and lean on the Housing Referral Office's updated rental lists rather than waiting to search cold.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include the Foothills or Somerton?
Both can provide additional properties to compare, but evaluate the actual route to MCAS Yuma and the household’s needs. Start with a clear reason for widening the search, such as a suitable layout or location for another regular destination.
What should I ask about a Yuma rental before accepting?
Confirm cooling, a suitable sleep environment, laundry, internet, parking and who handles maintenance. Explain unusual work hours in advance. A furnished listing does not establish that every feature needed for your particular assignment is included.
Which local historic site relates to military logistics?
Colorado River State Historic Park preserves the former quartermaster-depot setting and its role in supplying the region. Check current visitor information and leave time for the exhibits. The Territorial Prison offers a separate view of Yuma’s history.
