Overview
Marine Corps Base Hawaii sits on the Mokapu Peninsula at Kaneohe Bay on windward Oahu, and its stated mission is to provide the facilities and services that support combat readiness while promoting the well-being, morale, and safety of the roughly 25,000 Marines, sailors, family members, and civilians who live and work there.

Getting there
Nearly everyone arrives by air through Honolulu International Airport, and the USO office in the main tower terminal's baggage claim area is a recommended first stop for contacting a gaining command or arranging transportation help.
The installation guide does not list public transportation directly to the base. Arrange transport that connects your lodging with the part of the installation where you will work.

Lodging
The Inns of the Corps at Kaneohe Bay, the Temporary Lodging Facility on G Street (Building 6534), is the designated government lodging for Marine Corps Base Hawaii, with a 24-hour front desk and some pet-friendly rooms, though most island hotels do not accept pets. If the Inns are full, guests receive a Statement of Non-Availability that authorizes reimbursed off-base lodging from a TLA-approved list maintained by the TLA office.
Temporary Lodging Allowance is paid in 10-day increments for up to 60 days after initial arrival, but it is a reimbursement, not an advance, so households should expect to front lodging and meal costs before the first TLA payment lands.
Marines heading to commands other than MCBH Kaneohe Bay itself, such as those at Camp Smith or Pacific-focused joint headquarters, still route through the MCBH TLA Office for guidance on lodging and reimbursement rather than a separate office.

Housing & nearby communities
On-base family housing at MCBH is managed jointly by the Family Housing Department and Hunt Residential Management as the installation's public-private venture partner, with Ohana Military Communities also named as a managing partner revitalizing base neighborhoods.
Families who go the off-base route are competing directly with Oahu's civilian rental market, and the source material notes that rental housing on the island tends to be smaller than mainland norms, mostly multiplex construction with fewer bedrooms.

What to look for in a furnished home
A home that fits your routine
Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.
Compare the full arrangement
Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.
Settle the important details early
For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.
Choosing a nearby community
Kāneʻohe: a Windward Oʻahu starting point
Kāneʻohe is a major residential community on Oʻahu’s windward side, with a commercial center along Kamehameha Highway and services around Windward Mall. It is a useful starting point for a Marine Corps Base Hawaii assignment on the peninsula. Compare the actual route and entrance before choosing a home. Ask about parking, laundry, cooling and whether the rental shares any facilities with another household. A windward-side address should still be evaluated against the specific duty location.
Kailua: residential town and beach setting
Kailua combines a residential community with a town center and well-known beach areas. It broadens the search around the Marine base while offering a different everyday setting from Kāneʻohe. Compare the property’s route, parking and indoor space before selecting for beach proximity. A compact coastal unit may be comfortable for one traveler but less suitable for a family or roommates needing separate work areas. Confirm the full rental arrangement and dates before treating the listing as a long-stay option.
Waimānalo: farther along the windward coast
Waimānalo provides another coastal-community comparison south of Kailua. Consider it when a particular home or household preference makes that setting attractive. Evaluate the full road journey to the base and the services close to the property rather than choosing from a shoreline map alone. If family accompanies you, confirm school and childcare locations before committing. A pleasant area for a day off is not automatically the best place for the routine you will repeat throughout the assignment.

Schools & childcare
The Marine Corps School Liaison Program, based in Building 216 on Mokapu Road at MCBH Kaneohe Bay, is the named point of contact for families navigating local school enrollment questions on windward Oahu; it keeps standard weekday office hours and is closed on weekends and federal holidays.
Child and youth care is coordinated through Marine Corps Family Care's Children and Youth Program, located on Lawrence Road in Building 5082, which operates weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is closed weekends and holidays — worth contacting early given how tight housing and services can run on island.

Healthcare
MCBH's Branch Health Clinic at Kaneohe Bay (Building 6905, Harris Ave) provides on-base medical care weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with extended hours the first Wednesday of each month; a separate dental clinic is reachable through the same base phone system. When specialty care isn't available locally, patients are referred to Tripler Army Medical Center, about a 30-minute drive from Kaneohe Bay and only 10 minutes from Camp Smith.
Tripler is described as the largest medical facility in the Pacific, a 550-bed hospital serving active duty, families, retirees, and VA beneficiaries, and it houses the only military emergency room on Oahu.
Dental care draws a hard line for families: active-duty service members use the military dental clinics, but family members are not permitted that service and must arrange civilian dental care off base, coordinated through the nearest Health Benefits office.

Everyday services
The base's Personal Financial Management Program, located in Building 220 on the first deck, is a named resource for building a household budget suited to Hawaii's notably high cost of living, and it's worth an early call before committing to any lease or major purchase.
Utilities for off-base housing aren't centrally managed by the installation; the source points residents to InMyArea.com to compare providers by ZIP code, a practical starting point when setting up a household off base.

Off duty
Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden
Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden in Kāneʻohe offers a planted landscape beneath the Koʻolau range. It is a useful local outing when you want time outdoors without driving to another side of the island. Check the city garden’s current visitor information and use designated parking and walking areas. Leave time to enjoy the setting rather than making the visit solely about a roadside photo. It can become a repeatable local break during a longer stay.
Kailua’s public beach areas
Kailua’s coast provides an opportunity for a simple beach-area outing, but use current conditions and public access information to choose what to do. A walk along the shore and a water activity are different plans. Respect neighborhood parking and access rules, particularly around residential streets. If you are staying elsewhere, include the return route in the day’s timing. Enjoying the coast does not require choosing a rental beside it if another home better supports the work week.
Bishop Museum
Bishop Museum in Honolulu interprets Hawaiian and Pacific history, culture and natural history through its collections and exhibitions. It is a valuable complement to outdoor sightseeing because it provides context for the place where you are staying. Check current exhibitions and admission before planning the visit. Treat it as a separate cross-island outing with enough time to explore. It can be especially useful early in a longer assignment, before visiting more of the island’s cultural landscapes.

Making the most of a longer stay
Use the correct side of Oʻahu for the assignment
A Marine Corps Base Hawaii stay on the peninsula is a different housing search from Schofield, Pearl Harbor or central Honolulu. Confirm the actual duty site before considering island-wide listings. Compare the work route and the household’s other destinations together. If the assignment involves more than one location, weigh how often each trip occurs. A property should be selected for the routine, not simply because every address is technically on the same island.
Clarify shared-property arrangements
Some rentals may be part of a larger residence or share parking, laundry or outdoor space. Ask exactly what is private, how entry works and whether the home meets the needs of your full party. Confirm internet, cooking equipment and any stairs before deciding. For roommates, separate bedrooms and predictable common-space use can matter more than a picturesque outdoor area. Keeping these details clear leaves more freedom to enjoy Windward Oʻahu when you are off duty.
