Lodging
MCRD's own Temporary Officer Quarters on Neville Road and the Transient Billeting facility at Building 625 on Tripoli Avenue serve official travel, with billeting giving priority to those on permanent change of station orders and not accepting pets.
When on-depot rooms are full, the housing office refers travelers to Navy Lodges at Naval Station San Diego or Naval Air Station North Island, or to the Inns of the Corps Miramar Inn at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, giving TDY visitors several regional fallback options within the San Diego military community.

Housing & nearby communities
Government family housing for MCRD personnel is managed centrally through the Commander, Navy Region Southwest Family Housing Welcome Center at Naval Base San Diego, not through a standalone MCRD housing office, and covers the entire San Diego region including Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
The regional inventory is large but in high demand: 9,040 government homes exist across 37 sites, with Murphy Canyon Heights the single largest site at 2,321 units; waiting times can run from a few months to as long as two years depending on the site chosen, so families should apply as soon as orders are in hand.

What to look for in a furnished home
A home that fits your routine
Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.
Compare the full arrangement
Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.
Settle the important details early
For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.
Choosing a nearby community
Midway: the immediate urban context
The Midway area sits within a commercial and industrial part of San Diego with pockets of residential development. Its relationship to the depot makes it a relevant comparison area, but the specific building and surroundings deserve attention. Ask about parking, entry, laundry and a quiet bedroom. An address that is geographically close may still have a different day-to-day environment from the home you want. Request enough current information to understand the property beyond its interior photographs.
Point Loma: a broad peninsula-side search
Point Loma includes residential neighborhoods, commercial areas and several military facilities. A listing using that name should be compared with MCRD specifically rather than another naval destination on the peninsula. Check the actual road approach and parking before selecting for a coastal setting or view. For a longer stay, ask about workspace and bedroom privacy. If family is visiting for a graduation, confirm the complete party and guest arrangements with the host before booking.
Mission Valley: another city-based option
Mission Valley follows the San Diego River through a broad east–west corridor and contains several different residential and commercial settings. It can add useful housing options, but the precise address matters for the trip to MCRD. Compare building access, parking and the full rental arrangement along with the route. A property convenient for regional highways or visitor attractions is not automatically the best home for a specific duty or training schedule.

Schools & childcare
Families with school-age children can work with the Marine Corps School Liaison, based in Building 6E on Hochmuth Avenue aboard the Depot, to navigate enrollment questions in the local area; appointments are recommended rather than walk-ins.
Child and Youth Programs resource and referral services are available through an office at 4025 Tripoli Avenue, Building 14, aboard MCRD, operating weekday business hours only.

Healthcare
The Branch Medical Clinic at Building 596 on Guadalcanal Street handles active-duty and recruit care aboard MCRD, but access to its medical, dental, and pharmacy services is restricted to assigned personnel and recruits, so incoming family members should not expect care on the Depot itself.
Naval Medical Center San Diego, near Balboa Park, is the region's major military hospital and the referral point for dependents and the wider active-duty population, offering a full range of specialty and primary care services well beyond what MCRD's own clinic provides.
For urgent civilian emergency care, the nearest off-base hospital is UC San Diego Medical Center-Hillcrest, about two miles from the Depot, and several retail pharmacies sit within a mile of the installation for routine prescription needs.

Everyday services
MCRD has no base operator, so newcomers should route routine questions through the Information & Referral Office, available on weekdays, or the 24-hour Provost Marshal's Office line after hours for anything urgent.
For anyone commuting from the Murrieta/Temecula corridor, the Transportation Incentive Program offers Enterprise-provided vanpool vehicles with shared costs and driving duties.

Off duty
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
Old Town State Historic Park preserves and interprets buildings and settings associated with early San Diego. It offers a history-focused outing near the depot’s part of the city. Check current opening information for the particular museums or buildings you want to visit. Allow time to walk and read the interpretation rather than treating the area only as a meal stop. It can fit a shorter free period without requiring a cross-city itinerary.
Maritime Museum of San Diego
The Maritime Museum preserves historic vessels on San Diego Bay, including the Star of India. It gives a visit a broader maritime perspective alongside the region’s active military presence. Check which vessels and experiences are currently available and review accessibility information if needed. A ship-focused visit deserves its own block of time. It can anchor a waterfront outing without adding several attractions that leave little time to explore any of them.
Mission Bay
Mission Bay provides a large public recreation setting with different parks, shoreline areas and activities around the bay. Choose a specific destination rather than navigating to the general bay name. A walk, picnic and rented-watercraft plan have different requirements, so check current city and operator information for the activity you intend. It is a useful option for a flexible local day when you want time outside without committing to a full museum visit.

Making the most of a longer stay
Distinguish the depot from nearby Navy facilities
MCRD San Diego, Naval Base San Diego and Naval Base Point Loma are different daily destinations. Confirm the location on your orders or event instructions before choosing a property advertised simply for military travelers in San Diego. A home may suit more than one installation, but the route needs to be evaluated for your actual purpose. If a household has multiple destinations, compare both routines before deciding on a shared home.
Plan a family visit around official instructions
For graduation visitors, use the depot’s current event and access information and keep lodging arrangements separate from the recruit’s training rules. Confirm who will sleep in the rental, parking and any visitor limits with the host. For a longer authorized assignment, prioritize a quiet workspace, laundry and a usable kitchen. Old Town, the waterfront museums and Mission Bay can remain flexible outings once the scheduled obligations and household routine are clear.

Local tips
Because MCRD sits inside a dense urban airport corridor, know your gate hours before you plan a late arrival: only Gate 5 runs 24/7, while Gate 2 and Gate 4 close or restrict traffic overnight and on weekends.
If you're bringing a pet, plan ahead: Transient Billeting does not allow pets and will refer you to local hotels instead, and most government family housing communities in the region also restrict or ban them.
