Overview

Moody is Air Combat Command's attack-and-rescue base. The 23rd Wing flies A-10C Thunderbolt IIs with the 74th and 75th Fighter Squadrons and runs the 347th Rescue Group's HH-60W Jolly Green IIs, HC-130J Combat King IIs, and Guardian Angel pararescue teams, while the 93rd Air Ground Operations Wing and its 820th Base Defense Group train the airmen who fight on the ground. About 4,500 military members and 480 civilians are assigned here, the 476th Fighter Group adds Reserve A-10 crews, and the wing's deployment cycle and exercise calendar keep a constant flow of aircrew, PJs, maintainers, and contractors passing through on TDY.

The base sits on nearly 12,000 acres of pine flatwoods ten miles northeast of Valdosta, Georgia, straddling Lowndes and Lanier counties about 30 miles north of the Florida line. Valdosta is a college town of roughly 48,000 built around Valdosta State University and the I-75 corridor, and it is hot, humid, and green — July highs run in the low 90s and the area sees 50-plus inches of rain a year. For a TDY traveler that means a car is mandatory, hurricane-remnant storms are a real fall risk, and the difference between lodging near the interstate and lodging on the Bemiss Road side of town is 15 minutes of your morning.

Weather

Valdosta is humid subtropical with no dry season: July averages a 91°F high and 73°F low, January runs about 63°F by day and low 40s at night, and the area averages around 53 inches of rain a year with summer afternoon thunderstorms nearly daily. Gulf and Atlantic hurricanes lose strength before they get here but still arrive as tropical storms — Idalia in 2023 and Helene in 2024 both knocked out power and dropped trees across Valdosta.

Best months

October through November and March through April — dry, sunny, highs in the 70s and low 80s.

Tough months

June through September for heat, humidity, and daily thunderstorms, with peak hurricane exposure in August and September; expect fog and frost on a few winter mornings.

Getting there

  • Valdosta Regional (VLD) is the closest commercial airport, about 30 minutes southwest of the gate, but it is a Delta-to-Atlanta-only field and fares are steep. Most TDY travelers fly into Tallahassee (TLH, about 75 miles and 1.5 hours west via US-84/I-10) or Jacksonville (JAX, about 2 hours 15 minutes via I-10 and I-75) and drive. Book a rental car — there is no base shuttle and no public transit in Valdosta.
  • The Main Gate on GA-125 (Bemiss Road) is open 24/7 and is where the Visitor Center sits. The Quiet Pines Gate off GA-125 is also listed as 24/7 on the housing site, the North Gate runs weekdays roughly 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the South Gate is outbound-only during the afternoon rush. Hours shift with security posture, so confirm on moody.af.mil or the 23rd Wing Facebook page before a late-night arrival.
  • The Visitor Control Center is at 9320 Davidson Road, Building 16, just outside the Main Gate, staffed Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (229-257-4443). Visitors 18 and older without a CAC or DoD ID need a REAL ID or enhanced driver's license, and your sponsor should have you pre-registered. If you are arriving on a weekend without a DoD ID, sort your pass in advance.
  • Traffic is light by any standard — the Bemiss Road corridor backs up for a few minutes at the 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. gate rushes and that is about it. The real access hazard is weather: the base and Bemiss Road flood in tropical systems, and after Helene in 2024 downed trees closed roads around Valdosta for days, so watch base social media any time a named storm is in the Gulf.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • On-base family housing is privatized under Hunt Military Communities as Moody Family Housing, roughly 280 homes in two neighborhoods, with the leasing office at 3131 Coney Street (229-261-9889) and the Air Force Military Housing Office in the same Building 320.
  • Waitlists move, but expect to spend at least a few weeks in the Moody Inn or a crashpad while you wait.
  • Off base, 2025-2026 listings put a three-bedroom rental in the $1,400 to $1,950 range depending on the neighborhood, and Zillow's mid-2026 average home value in Valdosta is about $215,000 — cheap enough that many families buy with a VA loan in Hahira or north Valdosta rather than rent.

BAH 2026 · MHA GA081

  • Moody falls in MHA GA081 (Valdosta).
  • Per published 2026 tables, E-5 BAH is approximately $1,524 with dependents and $1,416 without; O-3 is approximately $2,004 with dependents and $1,773 without.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator before you sign a lease.
NeighborhoodCommute

Bemiss / north Valdosta (31605)

The closest civilian neighborhoods to the gate, a mix of older ranch homes and newer subdivisions off Bemiss Road, with Lowndes County schools, three-bedroom rentals around $1,400 to $1,700, and a commute that never touches the interstate.

Commute: ~10-15 min

Hahira

The small town most Moody families pick — a walkable downtown, Hahira Elementary and Middle feeding Lowndes High, newer construction in the $250,000 to $350,000 range, and a straight shot to base on GA-122.

Commute: ~20-25 min

Lakeland (Lanier County)

Rural and quiet on the east side of the base with lower rents, Lanier County schools, and Banks Lake at your doorstep; it is the shortest drive from the east but you go to Valdosta for everything else.

Commute: ~15-20 min

Lake Park

South of Valdosta near the Florida line, with cheaper homes, Lowndes County schools, the Grassy Pond recreation area, and easy I-75 access for Florida weekends, at the cost of a longer daily drive.

Commute: ~30 min

Downtown / Valdosta State area

Single airmen and students like the restaurants and college-town energy near VSU, with Valdosta City schools and apartments under $1,200, but you cross the whole city to reach the gate.

Commute: ~25 min

Schools & childcare

  • There are no schools on Moody AFB. Base housing is zoned for Lowndes County Schools, and most Moody families off base attend Lowndes County, Valdosta City, Lanier County, or Berrien County schools depending on where they live.
  • Lowndes County Schools serve about 10,500 students across 11 schools and feed into Lowndes High, one of Georgia's biggest and most football-obsessed high schools; Valdosta City Schools serve about 8,000 students across 8 schools. Dewar Elementary, the closest Lowndes elementary to the base with more than 230 military-connected students, was named a 2025 Georgia Military Flagship School — the state's version of the Purple Star designation.
  • The School Liaison Program Manager is at 5090 Gardner Street, Building 115, Suite 133, weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 229-257-4380 or 23fss.fsy.schoolliaison@us.af.mil, and covers Lowndes, Valdosta, Lanier, Berrien, Cook, and Brooks districts.
  • The Child Development Center is at 3103 Robinson Road, Building 210 (229-257-9220), with full-day and hourly care from 6 weeks to age 5, and Family Child Care homes fill in the gaps. Get on the list at MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders — infant spots are the tightest.
06

Healthcare

  • The 23rd Medical Group at 3278 Mitchell Boulevard, Building 900, is an outpatient clinic — family medicine, pediatrics, women's health, physical therapy, mental health, and pharmacy — serving 17,000-plus beneficiaries. There is no emergency room. Appointment line 229-257-2778; hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. most weekdays with a 9:30 a.m. start on Wednesdays, and MHS GENESIS handles online booking and messaging.
  • Emergencies go to South Georgia Medical Center at 2501 North Patterson Street in Valdosta, a Level III trauma center about 20 to 25 minutes from the gate; SGMC also runs a satellite ER at Smith Northview on the north side of town, which is closer to the Bemiss corridor. Call 911 from base — 23rd MDG ambulances transport to civilian emergency departments.
  • Moody is in the TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military. TDY travelers on Prime can use the clinic for acute care; families should transfer enrollment through Humana before arrival.

Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area

Five minutes from the gate off Knights Academy Road, Grand Bay is a Carolina-bay wetland with a 2,600-foot boardwalk out to a 54-foot observation tower over the cypress swamp. Go at sunrise for alligators, wading birds, and quiet; bring a kayak for the marked paddle loop.

Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Fifteen minutes east of the base outside Lakeland, Banks Lake is a 4,000-acre blackwater cypress lake with a boat ramp, bass and crappie fishing, and some of the best paddling and photography in south Georgia. The refuge rents nothing, so borrow a kayak from Outdoor Rec.

Insider tips

  1. 01Tropical storms are the real weather hazard. Helene tore through Valdosta in September 2024 and Idalia the year before; keep a go-bag, a flashlight, and a full tank from August through October and watch the 23rd Wing Facebook page for base status.
  2. 02Fly into Tallahassee or Jacksonville, not Valdosta, unless the government fare to VLD is reasonable — the Delta-to-Atlanta connection is expensive and cancels easily, and either drive is under 2.5 hours.
  3. 03The Visitor Control Center closes at 6 p.m. weekdays and is not open weekends. If anyone in your party lacks a CAC, have your sponsor pre-register you in DBIDS or plan to arrive during business hours.
  4. 04Call the Moody Inn the day your orders drop. With only 64 VQ rooms, any exercise or PCS surge fills it, and you want the non-availability letter in hand before you book commercial lodging.
  5. 05Lodge on the Bemiss Road (GA-125) side of Valdosta, not at the I-75 exits. The interstate hotels are 25 minutes from the gate through town; the Bemiss corridor is 10 to 15 minutes with no traffic.
  6. 06PCS families: Hunt's on-base waitlist at Moody Family Housing moves in weeks, not months, but Hahira rentals go fast in summer. Start looking in April for a June or July report date.
  7. 07Pack for humidity and bugs. Gnats are relentless from May through September, mosquitoes own the evenings near the swamps, and sand spurs will find any flip-flop. Bring repellent and closed shoes for Grand Bay.
  8. 08Gate hours change with force protection conditions and the housing-site listings do not always match the base's. Before a late arrival, confirm the Main Gate on moody.af.mil rather than trusting a third-party page.

FAQ

Can I stay off base at Moody and still get reimbursed?
Yes, if the Moody Inn cannot house you. Call 229-257-3893 first; if they are full you receive a non-availability letter and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 standard CONUS rate that applies to Valdosta — $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE, with $51 M&IE on travel days.
Which gate do I use and is it open at night?
The Main Gate on GA-125 (Bemiss Road) is open 24/7 and is where the Visitor Center is. The North Gate runs weekday business hours and the South Gate is outbound-only at the afternoon rush. Visitors without a DoD ID need to stop at the Visitor Control Center at 9320 Davidson Road, staffed weekdays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Is there a hospital on Moody AFB?
No. The 23rd Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room (appointments 229-257-2778). Emergencies go to South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, a Level III trauma center roughly 20 to 25 minutes away, or SGMC's satellite ER at Smith Northview on the north side of town.
Where do Moody families live?
On base, Hunt's Moody Family Housing has about 280 homes. Off base, the Bemiss Road corridor in north Valdosta is closest to the gate, Hahira is the most popular small-town option with a 20-to-25-minute commute, and Lakeland and Lake Park offer cheaper, more rural living. Most families land in Lowndes County schools.
