Overview

Mountain Home is ACC's Strike Eagle wing in the high desert. The 366th Fighter Wing, the Gunfighters, flies more than 50 F-15Es across the 389th and 391st Fighter Squadrons, and the base also hosts the Republic of Singapore Air Force's 428th Fighter Squadron in the F-15SG under the Peace Carvin V program. Add the 726th Air Control Squadron and the Idaho Guard's 266th Range Squadron running the Mountain Home Range Complex, and you have about 5,100 military and civilian members plus 3,500 family members. Visiting fighter units, tanker crews, and joint terminal attack controllers cycle through constantly to use the ranges, which is why lodging tightens every time a large-force exercise lands on the calendar.

The place itself is remote by design. The base sits at 3,000 feet on a sagebrush plateau 12 miles southwest of Mountain Home (population about 16,000) and 50 miles southeast of Boise on I-84. Summers are hot, dry, and bright; winters are cold with wind, inversions, and freezing fog that can turn the interstate ugly. For a TDY traveler that means a rental car is not optional, gate access runs through a single 24/7 gate off Grand View Highway, and your choice of lodging is really a choice between a short drive from town and a long one from the Treasure Valley.

Weather

July averages highs in the mid-90s with summer afternoons regularly running 85-105°F; December highs sit near 39-45°F with lows in the 20s. Annual snowfall is light, around 11 inches, but wind gusts to 50 mph and winter inversions with freezing fog are the real hazards.

Best months

May, June, September, and early October — warm days, cool nights, clear skies for the ranges and the reservoirs

Tough months

December through February for inversions, fog, and icy I-84; late July through August for triple-digit heat and wildfire smoke

Getting there

  • Fly into Boise Airport (BOI), about 50 miles and 55 minutes from the base. Rent a car at the airport; every major agency is on site. Take I-84 east to Exit 90 (Mountain Home), then ID-67 (Airbase Road) south about 12 miles straight to the Grand View Gate. Twin Falls is the other direction at 95 miles and is not a practical alternative.
  • The Grand View Gate, off Grand View Highway (ID-67), is the 24/7 gate and the one to plan around. The Main Gate has been listed as closed until further notice on base directories while its Visitor Center stays open — check the Visitors Control Center page on mountainhome.af.mil or call ahead before you route to it.
  • The Visitors Control Center handles passes for anyone without a DoD ID. The published number is 208-828-6022, and outside VCC hours passes are handled through the gate at 208-828-2256. Bring a valid driver's license or REAL ID, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance; expect a 100 percent ID check at the gate. Confirm current VCC hours on the base site, since they have changed with staffing.
  • Traffic is light by any standard — the only backups are the 0630-0730 and 1600-1700 pushes on Airbase Road. Weather is the access problem: I-84 between Boise and Mountain Home gets freezing fog, black ice, and wind-driven dust that close lanes several times a winter, so check Idaho 511 before a dawn drive.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Family housing is privatized under Balfour Beatty Communities (Mountain Home Family Housing): 836 homes across neighborhoods like Coyote Terrace, Desert Skies, Sagebrush View, Trinity Heights, and Woodland Groves, with 564 of them junior-enlisted two- to four-bedrooms.
  • The Housing Management Office is at 520 Fir St, Bldg 182, 208-828-2781, with the Balfour Beatty leasing office at 208-832-9900.
  • Because the area is so remote, on-base housing is the default for most families and the waitlist moves with the PCS season.
  • Off base, the average Mountain Home rent sat around $1,600 in 2026, with three-bedroom houses roughly $1,900-$2,100; Boise and Meridian run higher, Nampa a bit lower.
  • Buying is common here — Mountain Home prices remain well below the Treasure Valley.

BAH 2026 · MHA ID086

  • Mountain Home AFB is MHA ID086.
  • Published 2026 tables show approximately $1,605 for an E-5 with dependents ($1,524 without) and $2,325 for an O-3 with dependents ($1,977 without), a decrease from 2025.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
NeighborhoodCommute

Base housing (Balfour Beatty)

Sagebrush View, Desert Skies, and the other on-base neighborhoods put you a few minutes from work, the CDC, and Stephensen Elementary — the easy answer in a town with a thin rental market.

Commute: ~5 min

Mountain Home (city)

A small ranching and railroad town of about 16,000 with new subdivisions on the north and east sides, the only Walmart for 50 miles, St. Luke's Elmore hospital, and three-bedroom rentals around $2,000 — the shortest commute you can get off base.

Commute: ~15-20 min

Boise (southeast and Bench)

Idaho's capital with real restaurants, the Greenbelt, Boise State, and top-rated schools; a big share of officers and dual-income families make the 50-mile I-84 commute daily and consider it worth it.

Commute: ~50-60 min

Kuna / South Meridian

Newer suburban neighborhoods with good Kuna and West Ada schools and slightly cheaper prices than Boise proper, but you add I-84 miles and a Kuna-Mora Road cross-country stretch to every drive.

Commute: ~60-70 min

Nampa

The most affordable Treasure Valley option and popular with families buying a first home, but at 70-plus miles it is a long haul that gets worse in winter fog.

Commute: ~75 min

Schools & childcare

  • Stephensen Elementary (pre-K through 4th) sits on base and is run by Mountain Home School District 193; it is the only school on the installation. Base housing students move on to Hacker Middle School (5th-6th) and the junior high and high school in town, about 11-12 miles away by district bus.
  • Mountain Home School District 193 is the single district serving both the base and the city; it is heavily military-connected and used to mid-year arrivals. Families in the Boise metro land in Boise, West Ada (Meridian), or Kuna school districts, which are among the largest and highest-rated in the state.
  • The School Liaison Program Manager works out of the Military & Family Readiness Center and is reachable through the M&FRC at 208-828-2458; Military OneSource also lists 208-828-6206 and 208-599-0412 for the liaison directly. Call before you PCS for enrollment and IEP transfer help.
  • The Child Development Center is on base at 208-828-2443, with a Family Child Care coordinator at 208-828-6715 for in-home providers. Request care through MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders — infant spots are the tightest.
06

Healthcare

  • The 366th Medical Group clinic at 90 Hope Drive, Bldg 6000, is the base MTF; appointment line 208-828-7900, hours 0730-1630 Monday-Friday, closed the first Wednesday morning of each month for training. It provides primary care, flight medicine, pharmacy, lab, radiology, dental, and mental health. Older directories still describe a small hospital and 24-hour urgent care — confirm current after-hours coverage on mountainhome.tricare.mil before you count on it.
  • For true emergencies go to St. Luke's Elmore Medical Center, 895 N 6th E in Mountain Home (208-587-8401), a 25-bed critical access hospital with a 24/7 emergency department about 15 minutes from the gate. Major trauma and specialty care go to St. Luke's Boise or Saint Alphonsus in Boise, roughly an hour away.
  • Mountain Home AFB is in the TRICARE West Region, managed by TriWest Healthcare Alliance. TDY travelers on Prime should use the base clinic or call the TriWest nurse advice line before seeking urgent care off base.

Exchange

Main Exchange next door at 625 Gunfighter Ave, Bldg 2700 (208-832-4353), with a shoppette, food court, and the base's only gas station.

Fitness

Gunfighter Fitness Center, 385 Aardvark Ave — a 58-machine cardio theater, free-weight room with a climbing wall, and a 24/7 annex for after-hours access.

Dining

Wagon Wheel Dining Facility, 480 7th Ave (208-828-2313), serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner on weekdays; the BX food court and the Gunfighters Club cover the rest.

MWR

366th FSS Outdoor Recreation rents boats, rafts, skis, and campers, and runs trips to the reservoirs and Sun Valley; there is a bowling center, auto hobby shop, and library.

Signature event

Gunfighter Skies air show, held on base in mid-May with the Thunderbirds in 2026 — free admission, tens of thousands of visitors, and every hotel room in Mountain Home booked.

Insider tips

  1. 01Per diem here is the Sun Valley / Ketchum rate because Elmore County is part of that locality — $295-$300 most of the year — so a crashpad or a good rental at the government rate is easy to justify. Verify the month you travel; April, May, October, and November drop to $181-$191.
  2. 02Plan every arrival around the Grand View Gate off ID-67. The Main Gate has been closed for extended periods; do not trust a GPS that routes you there at 2200 without checking the base site first.
  3. 03Winter inversions settle over the Snake River Plain for days at a time — freezing fog, ice, and single-digit wind chill on I-84. Keep a scraper, blanket, and full tank if you are commuting from Boise, and check Idaho 511 before you leave.
  4. 04Book the Sagebrush Inn the day your orders drop. Large-force exercises and the May air show fill it and the handful of Mountain Home hotels weeks out; get the non-availability number in writing.
  5. 05There is one grocery-scale store in town (Walmart) and the commissary is closed on Mondays. Stock a crashpad kitchen on your first day — the drive to Boise for anything else is an hour each way.
  6. 06Summer is hot, dry, and windy; pack sunscreen, lip balm, and a wide-brim hat for the flight line, and expect wildfire smoke to drop visibility for stretches of August.
  7. 07PCS families: put in for base housing as soon as you have orders and call the School Liaison for District 193 enrollment. If you want Boise schools, do the I-84 commute once in winter before you sign a lease.
  8. 08Idaho is a Mountain Time base and the Boise airport rental counters are busy on Sunday nights; reserve your car ahead and give yourself an hour for the drive plus gate processing.

FAQ

Will DTS reimburse a crashpad at Mountain Home AFB?
Yes, when on-base lodging is unavailable. Call the Sagebrush Inn at 208-828-5200, record the non-availability number, and lodge commercially at the FY2026 Elmore County (Sun Valley / Ketchum locality) rate of $181-$300 depending on the month, plus $80 M&IE. Keep an itemized receipt with nightly rate and taxes.
Which gate do I use and what do I need to get on base?
Use the Grand View Gate off Grand View Highway (ID-67); it is open 24/7. Bring your CAC or a valid ID, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Visitors without a DoD ID need a pass from the Visitors Control Center (208-828-6022) — confirm hours on mountainhome.af.mil before you arrive.
Is there a hospital on base?
The 366th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic (appointment line 208-828-7900). For an emergency go to St. Luke's Elmore Medical Center in Mountain Home, 15 minutes from the gate with a 24/7 emergency department, or to St. Luke's or Saint Alphonsus in Boise for higher-level care.
Where do families live at Mountain Home AFB?
Most live in Balfour Beatty base housing or in the city of Mountain Home, 12 miles up Airbase Road. A large share of officers and dual-career families make the 50-mile I-84 commute from Boise, Meridian, or Kuna for the schools and amenities.
