02

Getting there

Most travelers will fly into Jacksonville International Airport, which sits about 32 miles from NAS Jacksonville and is served by a full slate of major carriers including Delta, American, Southwest, United, and JetBlue.

Lodging

The installation lists Navy Gateway Inns & Suites, the Navy Lodge and the Heritage Cottages among its lodging resources. Confirm the current location, room type and availability with your chosen provider.

The Heritage Cottages offer furnished two-bedroom accommodation with a screened porch near the base golf course. Contact the provider about current booking arrangements.

Space-available lodging is open to active duty, retirees, reservists, and eligible dependents, but is capped at seven days when booked on a space-A basis, so those without firm orders should plan alternate housing if their stay runs longer.

Housing & nearby communities

On-base family housing at NAS Jacksonville is fully privatized and managed by Balfour Beatty Communities, offering close to 301 homes split between two on-base neighborhoods, Patriots Point and River Oaks.

Families choosing to live off base have several nearby towns to consider, including Middleburg, Green Cove Springs, and Orange Park, along with the Jacksonville neighborhoods of Southside, Northside, Westside, Fleming Island, and Mandarin.

Single junior sailors, specifically E-1 through E-3 and E-4s with under four years of service arriving on PCS orders, are required to live in the Combined Bachelor Quarters on base.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

06

Choosing a nearby community

Orange Park: a south-side comparison

Orange Park is a town in Clay County, but the name is also used across a wider mailing-address area. Ask for the complete property location before judging the route to NAS Jacksonville. It is a useful comparison region for a household looking south of the air station, provided the daily trip and other needs fit. Check parking, internet and a quiet sleep arrangement. For families, confirm the school serving the exact address rather than relying on the general Orange Park label.

Fleming Island: farther along the St. Johns side

Fleming Island is a Clay County community on the western side of the St. Johns River. It provides another residential area to compare if a specific property or household requirement makes the location attractive. Evaluate the entire drive to NAS Jacksonville and any childcare or school stops. More space or a preferred layout can be valuable, but those benefits should be weighed against the trip repeated every day. A broad Jacksonville-region listing does not make all addresses interchangeable.

Jacksonville’s west side: narrow a very large city

Jacksonville covers a large area, so a city-wide search can return properties with very different relationships to the air station. Start by identifying the side of the St. Johns River and the route to your duty location. A beach-area or far-north listing may suit another installation better than NAS Jacksonville. Compare actual addresses and household routines before choosing. The goal is a useful home near the assignment, not simply a property with Jacksonville in the description.

Schools & childcare

NAS Jacksonville has a Navy School Liaison office in Building 2069 on Mustin Road, available weekdays to help families navigate local school enrollment and transitions. This office is the primary point of contact for education questions rather than a school itself.

The installation's Navy Child Development Center is located in Building 2070 on Mustin Road and operates weekdays from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed on weekends and holidays. Families should plan ahead and use MilitaryChildCare.com to request care.

Healthcare

Naval Hospital Jacksonville, located at 2080 Child St., is a general medical and surgical hospital offering inpatient and outpatient care, and it houses the Navy's largest Family Practice Training Program. It has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval and was the first facility on Florida's First Coast to receive baby-friendly certification.

Active-duty members have a dedicated Branch Health Clinic in Building 964 on Ajax Street, open weekdays 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for primary care, separate from the family- and retiree-focused hospital services. New arrivals should update their address with DEERS, select a local primary care manager through TRICARE, and register at medical records promptly after checking in.

Everyday services

The Navy Wives Club runs a 'Not-New' Shop behind the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society near the main gate, open Tuesday and Thursday mornings, where newcomers can pick up gently used household goods, clothing, and uniforms at low cost, and departing families can donate items instead of hauling them along on a move.

Off duty

Ortega’s river setting

Ortega occupies a peninsula between the St. Johns and Ortega rivers and has a distinctive residential and historic setting. It can provide context for the neighborhoods north of the air station during a local drive or a visit to public areas. Respect private property and choose public access for any waterfront walk. A simple nearby outing can be enough after a demanding week, without needing to cross the entire city for every period of free time.

Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

The Cummer Museum combines art collections with historic gardens beside the St. Johns River. It offers a cultural outing on the west side of the river and a change from aviation or beach-focused activities. Check the current exhibitions and garden access before visiting. Allow time for the parts that interest your group rather than treating the museum as a quick stop between errands. It is also a useful option to keep in mind when an outdoor plan changes.

Ravine Gardens State Park

Ravine Gardens State Park is in Palatka and preserves a designed garden landscape with ravines, terraces and historic park structures. Treat it as a separate regional outing rather than an immediate NAS Jacksonville neighborhood park. Check current trails and facility access before choosing the route. Leave enough time to explore and return without rushing. It adds variety to a longer stay when you have already become familiar with the everyday Jacksonville routine.

Making the most of a longer stay

Do not mix up Jacksonville’s naval bases

NAS Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport are on different sides of a large metropolitan area. Confirm the installation and the specific reporting location before choosing a home advertised for military travelers. A property well placed for Mayport may be a poor fit for NAS Jacksonville. If your assignment genuinely involves both, compare how often each trip occurs and select a home around the schedule rather than a generic regional midpoint.

Build a west-side routine first

For a NAS Jacksonville stay, begin with work, groceries, laundry and any family destinations on the routes you will actually use. Then add leisure trips separately. Ask about cooling, parking and the property’s sleeping arrangement if the assignment involves unusual hours. A well-organized home routine can make a long stay easier even when the rental is not near the most familiar visitor attractions. There is time to explore the wider region once the weekdays work.

Local tips

Florida law requires headlights to be on any time visibility is reduced, including rain, fog, smoke, dawn, and dusk, a rule that surprises many newcomers used to less strict daytime lighting requirements elsewhere.

There is no base telephone operator at NAS Jacksonville, so instead of calling a general base number, check the installation homepage's Useful Info/FAQs page for a directory.

Frequently asked questions

What are my options for short-term lodging on base?
The installation lists Navy Gateway Inns & Suites, the Navy Lodge and the Heritage Cottages among its lodging resources. Confirm the current location, room type and availability with your chosen provider.
Is a Jacksonville beach rental convenient for NAS Jacksonville?
Do not assume so. The metropolitan area is large and river crossings can change the journey. Compare the exact property with the air station and your reporting hours. Orange Park, Fleming Island and west-side addresses offer other starting points.
Are Orange Park mailing addresses all inside the town?
No. The name is used more broadly than the town boundary. Use the full address for commute, school and local-service research. A neighborhood label alone is not enough to establish the routine a particular rental will create.
Is Mayport part of the same housing search?
It is a separate naval installation and a different daily destination. Choose the guide and property search around the installation on your orders. A general Jacksonville military-lodging label can obscure that important distinction.
