Overview
Naval Air Station Oceana is the Navy's East Coast Master Jet Base, hosting 19 fighter/attack squadrons flying the fleet's most advanced strike-fighter aircraft in support of Atlantic Fleet operations.

Getting there
Most travelers fly into Norfolk International Airport, roughly 20 miles from NAS Oceana; a Navy representative staffs a military information booth in the main lobby on weekdays, and a USO is located on the arrivals level with food, computers, and referral help for active-duty and retired personnel and their families.

Lodging
Transferring service members and families have three lodging paths: Navy Gateway Inns & Suites, Navy Lodges, or local hotels. The Hampton Roads region has seven Navy Gateway Inns & Suites properties offering suites, single rooms, kitchenette units, and handicap-accessible rooms for both single and married personnel, reservable through 1-877-NAVY-BED.
For a homier stay, three Navy Lodges serve the area at JEB Little Creek, Norfolk Naval Base, and Dam Neck Annex, each with kitchenettes, cribs, and cable TV; all lodges and Gateway Inns accept pets (up to two dogs or cats, 70 lbs and under) for a nightly fee.

Housing & nearby communities
Accompanied personnel choose between privatized (PPV) family housing or renting in the local community, with the Navy Housing Service Center at NAS Oceana serving as the required first stop for both paths.
Single sailors in the junior enlisted ranks typically live in Unaccompanied Housing on NAS Oceana itself, which houses about 1,600 personnel across 10 buildings with laundry, lounges, and vending areas within walking distance of work and recreation facilities.
For an off-base stay, compare rental communities around Hampton Roads with your work location at Oceana. Check the lease length and included services for each home.

What to look for in a furnished home
A home that fits your routine
Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.
Compare the full arrangement
Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.
Settle the important details early
For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.
Choosing a nearby community
Virginia Beach: distinguish the city from the oceanfront
Virginia Beach is a large independent city, not simply the resort strip along the Atlantic. An Oceana search should begin with the work location and the actual address of each rental. A home near the oceanfront can provide a different daily experience from an inland residential property. Compare parking, a quiet bedroom and the route before choosing for beach access alone. If your assignment includes different sites, identify how often each trip occurs before deciding on a location.
Chesapeake: a separate South Hampton Roads option
Chesapeake is another large independent city in the region and can add useful residential choices. Its size makes a city-level description inadequate for judging access to Oceana. Ask for the address, map the complete trip and consider all regular household destinations. A property may offer the extra bedroom or layout you need while requiring a different commute. Weigh that tradeoff explicitly rather than assuming every South Hampton Roads rental is equally practical for aviation duty.
Norfolk: compare the reason for looking farther west
Norfolk’s naval and port setting makes it prominent in any military-lodging search for the region. For an Oceana assignment, however, it is a separate housing decision. Include a Norfolk property if the specific home or another household destination gives you a reason to do so, then compare the route to the air station. Naval Station Norfolk and NAS Oceana are different duty locations. A listing tailored to one should not automatically become the preferred choice for the other.

Schools & childcare
The Navy School Liaison for NAS Oceana operates out of 875 D Avenue, Building 531, on weekdays and serves as the point of contact for families navigating local school enrollment and transitions. Because school district assignment depends on your specific home address, families should confirm their zoned schools with the school liaison or the local school district once housing is finalized.

Healthcare
The Oceana Branch Medical Clinic, located at 1550 Tomcat Blvd., Suite 150, handles routine and outpatient care but is not equipped for life-threatening emergencies; those cases are directed to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth or the nearest civilian hospital. Clinic hours run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a later 8 a.m. start on Wednesdays.
Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, the Navy's oldest continuously operating hospital, anchors the region's care network and is the only military facility on the Southside Hampton Roads with an emergency room, serving nearly 180,000 beneficiaries across the area. Active-duty dental care is available at the Oceana Branch Dental Clinic, but this clinic does not serve family members, who must instead use the TRICARE Dental Program network.

Everyday services
The Navy Housing Service Center at Building 280 on Tomcat Blvd is the practical hub for anything housing-related, whether you're pursuing PPV housing, searching the off-base rental database, or attending a home-buying workshop co-hosted with the Fleet and Family Support Center.

Off duty
First Landing State Park
First Landing State Park protects a coastal landscape on the Chesapeake Bay side of Virginia Beach. Its trails and day-use areas offer a different setting from the Atlantic resort oceanfront. Choose the part of the park and activity you want using current state-park information. A walk, a beach visit and an overnight stay have different arrangements. It is a useful local option when you want time outdoors without turning the day into a long regional drive.
Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center
The Virginia Aquarium provides a marine-life-focused outing in Virginia Beach. It is a useful alternative to simply spending every free period at the shore, particularly for visiting family or a household with varied interests. Check current exhibits, admission and operating arrangements before planning around a specific feature. Allow enough time to explore the parts that interest you. Any separately operated adventure activity should be researched on its own rather than assumed to be included.
Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge
Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge protects coastal habitat in the southern Virginia Beach area. It provides a quieter landscape than the developed resort sections of the city. Use U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service information to identify current public routes and seasonal restrictions. Choose an outing suited to the conditions and carry what you need rather than expecting a full-service beach venue. The protected setting is best enjoyed at a slower pace with time for wildlife observation.

Making the most of a longer stay
Make aviation activity part of the property conversation
Oceana is an active aviation installation. If sleep timing or sound sensitivity matters to you, ask about the specific property and bedroom setting before selecting it. Do not assume that a home’s distance from a map marker predicts its sound environment. Explain any need for daytime rest, quiet study or different roommate schedules. Window coverings, room placement and private workspace are practical details that can make a long assignment more comfortable.
Use the region without confusing the installations
Hampton Roads includes multiple naval facilities, cities and different road approaches. Confirm whether your assignment is at Oceana, Dam Neck or another specific location before shopping for a home. Build the housing search around that daily destination and any family needs. Then use the bay-side park, aquarium and refuge as separate outings. There is no need to choose a rental beside a weekend attraction if another property makes the duty week easier.
