Overview

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island serves as the Navy's only naval aviation installation in the Pacific Northwest, hosting the fleet's EA-18G Growler electronic-attack squadrons along with P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

Getting there

There is no airport directly on Whidbey Island, so most arrivals fly into Sea-Tac, about two hours south, Paine Field in Everett at roughly 90 minutes, or Bellingham International about an hour north, then drive or arrange further transportation.

Driving to the base typically routes through Interstate 5 to WA-20 West, crossing the dramatic Deception Pass Bridge, a narrow, winding two-lane road that deserves cautious driving, especially at night.

Lodging

Navy Gateway Inns and Suites operates from McCormick Lodge on Ault Field with 130 rooms available to service members, dependents, retirees, DoD civilians and reservists holding valid ID, with priority given to those on official orders. Rooms include free Wi-Fi, laundry, a business center, and an exercise room, useful for TDY travelers who need workspace during a stay.

The Navy Lodge sits on the Seaplane Base within walking distance of the exchange, commissary, and downtown Oak Harbor, offering 48 units and 2 suites with kitchenettes and pet-friendly rooms.

Because the Seaplane Base and Ault Field are five miles apart with no shuttle connecting them, travelers staying at the Navy Lodge but working at Ault Field will need their own transportation.

Housing & nearby communities

NASWI's family housing has been converted to a Public-Private Venture managed with Hunt Military Communities, offering 1,489 units.

Neighborhoods are organized by rank band: Whidbey Apartments and Victory Terrace serve junior enlisted E1-E6, Crescent Harbor's three phases and Oriole Street offer larger single-family homes for enlisted families, and Maylor Point, Maylor Coral, Maylor Glacier and Forbes Point house senior enlisted through field-grade officers on the Seaplane Base itself.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

Choosing a nearby community

Oak Harbor: the principal NAS Whidbey community

Oak Harbor is on northern Whidbey Island and has a strong relationship with the naval air station. It is the natural first comparison area when daily base access is the priority. Confirm whether your work is at Ault Field, the Seaplane Base or another location before choosing a home. Ask about parking, a quiet sleep setup and internet, especially if your schedule is irregular. The city label alone does not identify the most practical approach to every part of the installation.

Coupeville: a smaller town on Penn Cove

Coupeville is the Island County seat on Whidbey Island, with a historic town setting around Penn Cove. It can appeal to someone who values a smaller community and is comfortable evaluating a different daily route. Compare the property with your actual duty location before choosing it for the town atmosphere. Ask about the sleeping environment and current local aviation activity if noise sensitivity matters. A particular home’s setting deserves more attention than a general assumption about island quiet.

Anacortes: a different island and road approach

Anacortes is on Fidalgo Island and is known as a gateway for ferries to the San Juan Islands. It broadens a NAS Whidbey housing search beyond Whidbey itself. That means the full road approach, including the Deception Pass area, needs to be part of the comparison. Consider a property there for a concrete household reason rather than simply to add more listings. Access to a weekend ferry destination should not outweigh a workable reporting-day routine.

Schools & childcare

The Navy School Liaison, housed within Navy Child and Youth Education Services on West Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor, serves as the installation's point of contact for families navigating local school enrollment questions. Given the island's rural setting, families relocating with school-age children may find this office useful as an early contact point rather than relying solely on district websites.

Healthcare

Naval Health Clinic Oak Harbor, on Ault Field, is a small outpatient facility supporting active-duty, retirees under 65, and eligible reserve members and their families; it does not provide emergency services. NASWI falls within the TRICARE West Region, and appointments run through the Puget Sound Regional Appointment Center.

Dental care at the base clinic is limited to active-duty members only, given demand, so families are encouraged to enroll in the TRICARE Family Member Dental Plan for coverage elsewhere. After-hours emergency dental care routes through WhidbeyHealth or Island Health emergency departments rather than the base clinic.

Everyday services

The Seaplane Base is the hub for day-to-day errands, housing the main Navy Exchange, Commissary, Veterinary Treatment Facility, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society office and thrift store, and some Child and Youth Programs.

Off duty

Deception Pass State Park

Deception Pass State Park spans a dramatic waterway and includes areas on Whidbey and Fidalgo islands. It offers shoreline, forest and viewpoints, but each access area produces a different outing. Choose a manageable walk or day-use destination using the park’s current map. Check conditions and use designated paths, especially around cliffs and strong tidal water. It is a distinctive local landscape that can be explored gradually rather than covered in one rushed visit.

Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve

Ebey’s Landing preserves a living historic landscape around Coupeville, including farms, town areas and coastal scenery. It differs from a conventional fenced park because public and private land are part of the reserve. Follow designated public routes and respect working properties. A walk paired with time in Coupeville can give a useful sense of the island’s history. Use the National Park Service’s current visitor information to choose a route suited to the weather and available time.

Fort Casey State Park

Fort Casey preserves coastal-defense fortifications on Whidbey Island and provides a historic counterpart to the modern naval presence. The site’s setting at Admiralty Inlet helps explain why the defenses were placed there. Check current park and lighthouse access before planning a visit around a particular feature. Leave time to walk the public grounds and read the interpretation. A focused Fort Casey visit is more useful than trying to combine every island landmark in one afternoon.

Making the most of a longer stay

Separate island access from the daily commute

A ferry can be useful for some regional travel, but it is not automatically part of every trip to NAS Whidbey. Compare the actual road or ferry itinerary for your arrival and for daily life separately. If considering a home off Whidbey, make sure the route works at your reporting hours. For households sharing vehicles, discuss independent duty schedules before assuming one car will cover both travelers’ needs.

Choose a home for the schedule and season

Ask about heating, laundry, parking and a place for wet outdoor gear. Explain any need for daytime sleep and request details about the bedroom location rather than relying on the word quiet. Keep island outings flexible around current conditions. Oak Harbor, Coupeville and the parks provide enough variety that a free day can remain local; a San Juan ferry trip or mainland excursion can be reserved for a period with more time.

Local tips

Anyone considering off-base rentals should expect a credit and background check as standard practice among local property managers; those with credit issues can get help through the Fleet and Family Support Center rather than being caught off guard mid-lease search.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay if I don't have Navy Lodge or NGIS availability?
Local hotels in Oak Harbor are an option, though a Certificate of Non-availability is needed from both the Navy Lodge and NGIS to apply Temporary Lodging Expense (capped at 14 days) toward that stay.
Can I expect on-base housing right away?
On-base and nearby PPV housing includes 1,489 units across neighborhoods like Crescent Harbor and Maylor Point, but wait times vary by bedroom entitlement and pay-grade zone, so you may need off-base arrangements in the meantime.
Is Oak Harbor the best starting point?
It is a sensible first area for a NAS Whidbey search. Still compare the property with the specific duty site, because Ault Field and the Seaplane Base are different destinations. Coupeville and Anacortes may be alternatives when their routes and homes fit the assignment.
Do I need a ferry to reach Whidbey?
There is also a road approach through the Deception Pass area. Choose the itinerary that fits your actual starting point, vehicle and schedule using current travel information. Do not assume an island address means every journey requires a ferry reservation.
What should I check if aircraft noise affects sleep?
Ask about the specific property, bedroom location and local operating environment. Explain your sleeping hours before choosing. A community’s general reputation or a photo of a peaceful setting cannot establish the sound conditions at a particular home.
