Overview
Naval Base Coronado is a consolidated Navy installation made up of eight separate facilities, from Naval Air Station North Island in the beach city of Coronado to remote training sites tens of miles inland and offshore.

Getting there
Most personnel and visitors fly into San Diego International Airport, roughly nine miles from the base, and a USO center outside Terminal 2 assists traveling service members and families with information and shuttle guidance to the main gate.
The airport offers free shuttles between terminals and to the Old Town Transit Center and rental car facilities, and the San Diego Trolley and Metro Transit System buses can connect travelers onward toward Coronado for day-to-day travel.

Lodging
There is no long-term temporary base housing in the San Diego area, so official on-installation lodging options are limited to the Navy Lodge and Navy Gateway Inns & Suites, and demand routinely outpaces availability given the size of the duty station.
The Navy Lodge at North Island, located on Rogers Road, does not accept pets, while the separate Navy Gateway Inns & Suites locations at North Island and the Amphibious Base are pet friendly, so travelers with animals should book carefully and confirm policies directly.
When Navy lodging is unavailable, the current Temporary Lodging Expense policy calls for travelers to first check Navy Lodge availability before turning to civilian hotels such as those in the broader San Diego market, some of which offer military rates or weekly stays.

Housing & nearby communities
Family housing assignment for Naval Base Coronado personnel is centralized through the CNRSW Family Housing Welcome Center at Naval Base San Diego, which manages referrals across the entire San Diego region, including installations beyond NBC itself.
Across the San Diego region there are more than 9,000 government homes spread over 30 housing sites, split mostly between enlisted and a smaller share of officer units, with wait times ranging widely from a few months to as long as two years depending on the site chosen.

What to look for in a furnished home
A home that fits your routine
Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.
Compare the full arrangement
Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.
Settle the important details early
For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.
Choosing a nearby community
Coronado: distinguish the village and the installation site
Coronado connects to the mainland by the bridge and by the Silver Strand. A home in the village, farther down the Strand or near a particular installation entrance can produce different daily routines. Start with the exact Naval Base Coronado site where you will report. Then compare the property’s parking, sleep and study setup. A Coronado address is attractive for its setting, but it does not automatically answer whether the home is convenient for North Island, the amphibious base or another location.
Imperial Beach: the southern approach
Imperial Beach is a separate coastal city at the southern end of the San Diego region. It can be relevant to a search involving the Silver Strand side of Naval Base Coronado. Evaluate the specific route to your assignment rather than assuming that a beach-area rental is convenient for every command. Ask about parking, building layout and the actual private space included. For a longer stay, everyday services and a manageable commute should carry as much weight as proximity to the ocean.
Chula Vista: compare the complete crossing
Chula Vista offers a broader mainland search, stretching from the bay toward inland neighborhoods. If considering a home there for a Coronado assignment, map the full route using the appropriate bridge or southern approach. The city’s name does not establish which route will make sense. Compare the property’s household advantages against the additional travel involved. A mainland home may be a good fit, but it should be a deliberate choice based on the actual schedule.

Schools & childcare
The Navy School Liaison for Naval Base Coronado operates out of the Silver Strand Youth Center in Coronado, serving as the primary point of contact for families navigating local school enrollment questions. This is the named local resource for education support at NBC rather than any specific school district office.
Childcare capacity is a significant planning concern in the San Diego area generally, with a lengthy waitlist for Child Development Centers; families are advised to register through militarychildcare.com as soon as orders are received.

Healthcare
The Navy Primary Care Clinic at Naval Base Coronado, located on McCain Blvd, provides appointment-based outpatient primary care Monday through Friday, serving as the day-to-day medical touchpoint for personnel based on Coronado itself. For anything beyond routine primary care, referrals typically point toward the larger regional hospital.
Naval Medical Center San Diego is a regional military medical resource serving the area’s military community. Its location is separate from the Coronado installation sites.
Because San Diego is spread across many communities, the nearest emergency room will depend on where you're located day to day.

Everyday services
The Navy Housing Service Center, based at Naval Base San Diego, functions as a regional hub not just for housing assignment but also for renter dispute resolution, EFM housing coordination, and utility referral support via resources like InMyArea.com.

Off duty
Silver Strand State Beach
Silver Strand State Beach offers an ocean-and-bay setting along the narrow connection between Coronado and the mainland. It is a distinctive part of the local landscape and a useful candidate for a focused outdoor day. Check current California State Parks information for access, facilities and any closures before planning a particular activity. Ocean and bay conditions are different, so choose the activity using current guidance rather than assuming the entire shoreline offers the same experience.
Coronado’s beach and village
Coronado’s village setting and broad Pacific shoreline make a simple walk and meal a worthwhile outing. You do not need to combine the visit with a mainland attraction for it to feel complete. Choose public access points, check parking and follow current local beach notices. If you are staying elsewhere, leave time for the return route. Enjoying Coronado as a destination is different from deciding whether it is the right daily home base for the assignment.
San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge
The San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge protects important habitat within an otherwise heavily developed urban bay. It offers a nature-focused perspective on the South Bay landscape. Use the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s visitor guidance to identify areas open to the public; habitat protection can limit where visitors go. Plan around observation and a manageable walk rather than expecting a full-service recreation park. Check conditions and access before adding it to a day out.

Making the most of a longer stay
Name the exact Coronado duty site
Naval Base Coronado is an installation network, not one interchangeable address. Confirm the site, entrance and routine with your command before choosing between the village, Imperial Beach or a mainland property. If duty involves more than one site, compare the frequency of each trip. A home that appears central on a regional map may be less practical than one aligned with the location you use most often.
Think beyond a beach-stay checklist
For an assignment lasting weeks or months, practical details remain essential: parking, cooling, laundry, internet and a quiet workspace. Ask whether any outdoor areas or amenities are shared and whether the building has guest or vehicle rules. If traveling with family, check the full school or childcare route. Keep beach visits flexible around conditions and the training schedule. A well-chosen home should still feel useful on a busy weekday when there is no time to reach the shore.

Local tips
Given San Diego's high cost of living and tight rental market, checking in with the CNRSW Family Housing Welcome Center immediately upon arrival — rather than waiting — is the most consequential early step for families hoping to minimize their wait for government quarters.
If arriving with pets, confirm lodging pet policies before booking: the North Island Navy Lodge does not accept animals, while the Gateway Inns & Suites at North Island and the Amphibious Base do, so a small scheduling detail can determine which facility works for your family.
