Overview
Naval Base Kitsap is a regional Navy installation formed in 2004 from the merger of Naval Station Bremerton and Submarine Base Bangor, and it now also encompasses the Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport.

Getting there
Most travelers arriving from Seattle choose between two Washington State Ferries routes: a 30-minute crossing to Bainbridge Island or a 60-minute run directly into downtown Bremerton, which lands within a few miles of the base's main gate.
From Sea-Tac Airport, plan on roughly an hour and a half by car depending on traffic.

Lodging
Naval Base Kitsap offers two on-base lodging options for those arriving under orders: the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites, with locations at both Bangor and Bremerton, and the Navy Lodge, located within the Bangor complex. Gateway Inn & Suites allows stays for the duration of official orders, though space-available stays are capped at seven days.
The Navy Lodge at Bangor is convenient for families since it sits within walking distance of the main exchange, commissary, and the Cinema Plus Theater, letting travelers handle errands without needing a car right away.
Because availability shifts with fleet operations and the Navy Lodge often fills during summer months, reserving as early as possible is worthwhile, especially for permanent change of station families who can book up to a year ahead with orders in hand.

Housing & nearby communities
Public-Private Venture housing at Naval Base Kitsap totals 1,733 homes spread across several sites: 1,038 units at Bangor, 41 at Bremerton, 22 at Keyport, and 632 at The Landings, a community formerly called Jackson Park situated near the Naval Hospital about nine miles south of Bangor.
Wait times for PPV housing vary by bedroom count, entitlements, and pay grade, and because demand often outpaces supply, many families end up renting in the surrounding civilian community while waiting for a base home to open up.

What to look for in a furnished home
A home that fits your routine
Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.
Compare the full arrangement
Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.
Settle the important details early
For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.
Choosing a nearby community
Bremerton: the shipyard side
Bremerton is home to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Bremerton part of Naval Base Kitsap. It is a logical starting point when that is where you will spend most duty days. Compare the home with the actual entrance and work destination, then evaluate parking and the household’s other trips. The city also has ferry connections with Seattle, but a ferry opportunity for a day off should not be confused with a simple daily commute to every regional location.
Silverdale: a central Kitsap comparison
Silverdale is an unincorporated community in Kitsap County and provides another important comparison area on the peninsula. It may fit an assignment or household routine differently from Bremerton. Use the full address and identify whether your daily destination is Bangor, Bremerton or another site. A central-looking map position is not enough to choose the right home. Ask about parking, laundry and workspace, then compare the actual route at the hours you expect to travel.
Poulsbo: a distinct town setting
Poulsbo has a recognizable waterfront town center and a history shaped by Scandinavian settlement. It can appeal to travelers seeking that setting while staying in the Kitsap region. Compare the property’s relationship to your actual duty site before deciding the town atmosphere is worth the route. If a household has destinations in different parts of the peninsula, evaluate both. A good location is one that supports the busiest weekday as well as an enjoyable weekend walk.

Schools & childcare
Families with school-age children can reach the installation's School Liaison office, based at 2572 Cascades Pass Blvd in Bremerton, for help navigating local school district questions, including a separate contact line for Central Kitsap district questions. Because school enrollment is determined by home address, families should confirm their assigned district once they know where they will live.
For childcare referrals, the Family Center of Childcare Aware WA, located in the United Way Building in downtown Bremerton, serves as the point of contact for military families seeking care options in the community; the office responds to voicemail within one business day rather than keeping walk-in hours.

Healthcare
Naval Hospital Bremerton, at 1 Boone Road, is the main military medical treatment facility for the area and includes the primary emergency room accessible to the community.
For care beyond what's available locally, Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma is about 45 miles from Bangor, and Naval Hospital Bremerton runs a shuttle there for TRICARE beneficiaries with no reservation required — a useful option for appointments requiring a larger facility.
Dental care through the Naval Dental Center Bremerton and its Bangor branch clinic is limited to the active-duty population due to high demand, so family members are encouraged to enroll in the TRICARE Family Member Dental Plan rather than count on the base clinic for routine visits.

Everyday services
Unaccompanied barracks at Bangor and Bremerton are fully furnished and centrally located for quick access to the galley, Navy Exchange, and commissary, which simplifies daily logistics for single sailors living on base.
The Housing Service Center at Bangor Plaza doubles as an advocate for renters in the civilian community, offering help with lease reviews, landlord disputes, and connecting families to local property listings through resources like homes.mil, which is useful whether or not you end up in PPV housing.

Off duty
Puget Sound Navy Museum
The Puget Sound Navy Museum in Bremerton interprets the region’s naval history near the shipyard and ferry-terminal area. It is a useful first outing for understanding how the Navy shaped the city. Check current visitor hours and allow time to explore the exhibits that interest you. A museum visit does not provide shipyard access. Pairing it with a walk in the public waterfront area keeps the outing concentrated and manageable.
Illahee State Park
Illahee State Park lies on Port Orchard Bay near East Bremerton, combining a wooded setting with shoreline access. It gives a Kitsap stay an outdoor option without requiring a ferry trip or a long regional drive. Choose the activity you want and check the state park’s current facilities and conditions. A shore walk, camping plan and water activity need different preparation. Use designated areas and leave enough daylight for the route back to your lodging.
Naval Undersea Museum at Keyport
The United States Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport focuses on the Navy’s undersea history and technology. It provides a complementary visit to the Bremerton museum rather than repeating the same subject. Check the museum’s current opening and visitor information before going. It can be a worthwhile indoor outing for visitors interested in the missions supported across Naval Base Kitsap. Plan it as its own destination; the museum and adjacent operational facilities have different access arrangements.

Making the most of a longer stay
Choose Bangor or Bremerton before choosing a neighborhood
Naval Base Kitsap includes distinct sites, so the most important housing question is where you will actually work. A shipyard assignment and a Bangor assignment can lead to different shortlists. Compare the frequency of any secondary duty trips rather than choosing a theoretical midpoint. The right home should make the routine you repeat most often straightforward. This is especially important for travelers sharing a property but reporting to different locations.
Use ferries as a plan, not an assumption
Bremerton’s ferry links make Seattle a possible outing, but the trip should be planned using current schedules and the transport arrangement you intend to use. Walking aboard and taking a vehicle create different logistics. For everyday life, first make the Kitsap-side routine work: groceries, parking, laundry and a comfortable study space. Then use museums, state parks and occasional regional visits to explore without making every free day depend on a connection.

Local tips
Because Naval Base Kitsap is really three linked commands, always confirm whether your business is at Bangor, Bremerton, or Keyport before heading out; each has separate gates, and the Keyport site is reached by following signs through the Bangor Main Gate rather than a direct route.
If you're planning to take the ferry on a summer weekend, build in extra time — the Washington State Ferries note that ferry traffic gets very heavy during peak season and travelers may need to let several boats pass before boarding.
