Overview

Naval Base Point Loma sits on a peninsula shaped by both ocean and bay, home to a cluster of major Navy commands rather than a single homeported fleet.

Getting there

Most personnel arriving for duty at NBPL fly into San Diego International Airport, which is only about four miles from the base and a short drive via North Harbor Drive and Rosecrans Street to the Main Gate.

A USO desk near Terminal 2 can help arrange discounted shuttles to the gate, though its hours and services have varied and calling ahead is worthwhile.

Lodging

There is no temporary lodging facility at Naval Base Point Loma itself, so incoming families typically rely on Navy Lodge or Navy Gateway Inns & Suites locations elsewhere in San Diego, plus civilian hotels, while they sort out permanent housing. A Navy Gateway Inns & Suites location does exist on the Point Loma Sub Base.

Because San Diego is a high-demand duty station, book Navy Lodge reservations early — mentioning PCS orders can help secure priority, but availability still runs tight, especially in summer.

If you're traveling with a pet, lodging options narrow considerably: only the Naval Base San Diego Navy Lodge takes pets among the Navy Lodges, while pets are permitted at the Gateway Inns & Suites on Point Loma and at Coronado's Amphibious Base.

Housing & nearby communities

Government family housing assignment for Naval Base Point Loma personnel runs through the Commander, Navy Region Southwest Family Housing Welcome Center, based at Naval Base San Diego, which manages housing referrals across the whole San Diego region including Miramar and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot — not just Point Loma. Checking in with that center soon after arrival is the standard first step for anyone hoping for military housing.

Across the region there are 9,130 government homes spread over 38 sites, split between enlisted and officer units, with wait times ranging from a few months to well over a year and a half depending on the site chosen.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

06

Choosing a nearby community

Point Loma: the peninsula is not one commute

Point Loma contains residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, military facilities and a national monument. The peninsula’s shape and road approaches make the particular duty site important. Compare a home with the submarine-base side, another naval facility or whichever location your orders specify. Ask about parking and the indoor arrangement before deciding a peninsula address is ideal. A rental with a view can still be on the wrong daily route for your assignment.

Ocean Beach: a coastal neighborhood north of the peninsula

Ocean Beach lies on the Pacific near the mouth of the San Diego River, north of the Point Loma peninsula. It offers a distinct coastal neighborhood setting and is worth comparing if that environment matters to you. Check the complete work route, parking and the property’s quiet space rather than selecting only for beach proximity. A shared or compact home needs a clear agreement about bedrooms, common areas and visitors to remain comfortable through a longer stay.

Midway: a more commercial setting

The Midway area is primarily commercial and industrial with pockets of residential development. It gives a different kind of housing comparison from the hill and beach neighborhoods. Evaluate the actual building, surroundings and entry arrangement before deciding. Parking, a quiet bedroom and access to groceries can matter more than a broad Point Loma label. For an extended assignment, visit or request enough current information to understand how the home works beyond its interior photographs.

Healthcare

Naval Base Point Loma has a naval branch health clinic, NBHC Naval Training Center, on Cushing Road, offering routine outpatient care with weekday hours only — for anything urgent outside those hours, families need a plan for civilian or Naval Medical Center San Diego care instead.

For hospital-level and emergency care, Naval Medical Center San Diego is the regional hub and is described as the largest military medical facility in the world, running a 24/7 emergency room and a network of clinics feeding the broader San Diego military community.

Beyond the hospital, the region runs eight TRICARE clinics for beneficiaries, and dental care for active duty is handled through installation dental clinics, with TRICARE Dental Program coverage available for other enrollees.

Everyday services

The Fleet and Family Support Center supports NBPL personnel with financial classes covering budgeting, home buying, and investing — a practical resource given San Diego's cost of living.

Off duty

Cabrillo National Monument

At the southern end of Point Loma, Cabrillo National Monument brings together coastal scenery, lighthouse history and interpretation of the area’s past. It is a natural local outing during a Point Loma assignment. Check current National Park Service information for the parts of the monument you want to visit, especially shoreline areas affected by tides. Keep the visit separate from military-base access arrangements. A focused afternoon can be more enjoyable than trying to combine it with several stops elsewhere in San Diego.

Sunset Cliffs

Sunset Cliffs is known for its Pacific-facing coastal bluffs and the nearby natural park. It offers a different perspective from the bay-side naval setting. Use established public routes and respect barriers or closures rather than following informal paths toward the edge. Check conditions before planning around sunset and allow time to return safely after the light changes. It is a place for an unhurried coastal walk, not a guarantee of suitable access to the water below.

Liberty Station

Liberty Station occupies the former Naval Training Center and now combines public spaces, arts, dining and other uses. It is particularly relevant to a military visitor because the reused buildings connect the present-day neighborhood with its naval history. Choose a few places to explore and leave time to walk the area. Individual venues have their own opening schedules. It can be a convenient style of outing when you want to spend time locally without committing to a full museum day.

Making the most of a longer stay

Separate the work route from the weekend map

Point Loma’s attractions can make a regional housing search look deceptively simple. Before choosing a home, identify the road approach to the facility where you will spend most days. Then compare errands and any family destinations along that routine. A property that is central to sightseeing is not necessarily central to your assignment. If the command uses more than one location, weigh the actual frequency of those trips.

Ask urban-home questions early

For an apartment, condominium or shared property, confirm assigned parking, laundry access, entry arrangements and which outdoor spaces are private. Ask about the work area and the sleeping setup if your schedule includes early or late hours. If sharing with another traveler, agree on visitors and common-room use. These details make a more dependable basis for a long stay than a generic promise of a furnished home near the beach.

Local tips

Because San Diego lacks true long-term temporary Navy quarters, arriving families should expect to lean on hotel stays for longer than they might elsewhere.

Given how spread out San Diego's installations are, remember that housing, schools, and even some support offices you'll deal with for NBPL duty are administered regionally out of Naval Base San Diego rather than on Point Loma itself — worth knowing so you contact the right office the first time.

Frequently asked questions

What healthcare is available at Naval Base Point Loma itself?
NBPL has a branch health clinic (NBHC Naval Training Center) for routine weekday outpatient care, but for hospital-level or emergency services personnel and families rely on Naval Medical Center San Diego, which runs a 24/7 ER and a network of area clinics.
Who do I contact about schools near Naval Base Point Loma?
The Navy School Liaison office, located on base at 140 Sylvester Road, is the designated point of contact for school-related questions for NBPL families.
Is Point Loma housing interchangeable with downtown San Diego?
No. Compare the precise property and naval duty site before deciding. The peninsula’s road approaches and the location of the work area can make a substantial difference to the routine. Downtown may be an option, but it needs its own complete-route comparison.
Should I include Ocean Beach?
It is worth comparing if the coastal neighborhood setting appeals to you and the work route fits. Check parking, quiet space and the complete rental terms. Beach proximity alone does not establish the right home for several months of duty.
Which local outing connects with naval history?
Liberty Station reuses the former Naval Training Center and offers a way to explore that setting alongside present-day public spaces and venues. For a separate coastal-history visit, consider Cabrillo National Monument using its current visitor guidance.
