Overview
Naval Base San Diego traces its roots to 1919, when the city of San Diego deeded waterfront tidelands and marsh flats to the federal government for a fleet repair base, commissioned in 1922.

Getting there
Most travelers fly into San Diego International Airport (Lindbergh Field), located roughly eight miles from the base.
Ride-share drop-offs cluster near Northbound Harbor Drive at 32nd Street or the NEX Auto Port at 32nd and Norman Scott Road, both a short distance from the Main Gate.

Lodging
Navy Lodge is an on-base lodging resource at Naval Base San Diego. Ask about the room type, complete date range and any pet arrangements before relying on it. A room available for the first night does not establish availability for the entire assignment. Compare the written lodging plan with your orders and approved arrangements before selecting a private alternative.

Housing & nearby communities
Government family housing assignment for the entire San Diego area, including Naval Base San Diego, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and Marine Corps Recruit Depot, is centralized through the Commander, Navy Region Southwest Family Housing Welcome Center on base.
The region includes privatized military housing as well as conventional rentals. Ask the Housing Service Center about eligibility, the current application process and the terms for the community you are considering. Family housing and a short furnished TDY stay serve different needs; confirm whether the proposed lease length suits your orders before applying.
Because military family housing is only built to fill gaps in the private market, most personnel end up renting or buying off base.

What to look for in a furnished home
A home that fits your routine
Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.
Compare the full arrangement
Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.
Settle the important details early
For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.
Choosing a nearby community
National City: South Bay proximity
National City is a separate city in the South Bay region beside San Diego’s working waterfront. It is an important comparison area for a Naval Base San Diego assignment because the daily geography differs from the beach communities farther north. Look at the actual gate and pier or work building, then compare parking, groceries and the home’s layout. A smaller rental with a straightforward daily route can be a better fit for a demanding assignment than a larger property selected mainly for its weekend setting.
Chula Vista: a wide range of addresses
Chula Vista extends from the San Diego Bay side toward inland foothills. That east–west span matters when evaluating a listing: two homes in the same city can produce different trips to the waterfront base. Ask for the full address before deciding that the location fits. Compare the route, parking and household needs together. If family is accompanying you, confirm the school and childcare destinations before choosing between a bay-side and an inland property.
Downtown San Diego: urban conveniences and tradeoffs
Downtown includes several distinct neighborhoods, from Little Italy and the Marina area to East Village. A central location can make restaurants and city outings part of your routine, but check what the rental actually includes. Parking, building access, laundry and a quiet bedroom may be more consequential than the view. Compare the trip to the installation at your reporting time. A downtown home is most useful when the city setting supports your everyday needs as well as your time off.

Schools & childcare
The installation's School Liaison contact is located at Naval Medical Center San Diego, 34800 Bob Wilson Drive, available weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is the point of contact for families navigating local school enrollment questions tied to the base community. Actual school enrollment is determined by your home address and local school district, so confirm your assigned schools with the district once you have housing.
Childcare demand in San Diego is high, and the source material specifically advises registering as soon as orders are received.
Families can also pursue care through MilitaryChildCare.com, which centralizes requests for child development centers, school-age care, and certified family child care providers serving the broader Navy Region Southwest community.

Healthcare
Naval Medical Center San Diego is located on Bob Wilson Drive and serves the region’s military community. Contact the medical center or your health plan about care arrangements for your assignment.
The region also has branch clinics serving the military community. Use the medical center’s current clinic directory to identify the appropriate location and confirm appointments, hours and eligibility. A nearby military clinic should not be assumed to offer every service or accept walk-ins.
San Diego spans many neighborhoods, so consider the locations of your usual healthcare providers when choosing a home.

Everyday services
The Housing Service Center at 2625 LeHardy Street, Bldg. 3544, is a practical everyday stop for both incoming personnel navigating government housing and those renting privately, handling landlord disputes, rental listings, and community information.
Fleet and Family Support Center offers financial classes covering budgeting, home buying, and investing, useful given the area's high cost of living, along with confidential short-term counseling scheduled through CNRSW Centralized Scheduling.

Off duty
Balboa Park
Balboa Park brings museums, gardens, performance spaces and historic architecture together in a large urban park. It is best explored in parts during a longer stay. Choose one museum or garden area for a first visit, then return for another rather than trying to cover the entire park in an afternoon. Individual attractions have their own admission and schedules. The park’s variety makes it useful for solo outings, visiting family and days when you want a city activity instead of a beach trip.
USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway Museum occupies a retired aircraft carrier on San Diego’s downtown waterfront. Aircraft, shipboard spaces and exhibits connect a visit with the city’s naval history. Allow time for the parts of the ship that interest you, and review accessibility information if ladders or confined spaces would affect the visit. Check current admission details before going. It can anchor a waterfront day without needing to combine several distant attractions.
Cabrillo National Monument
Cabrillo National Monument sits at the end of Point Loma, with coastal views, lighthouse history and a protected shoreline setting. It provides a perspective on the bay from outside the working waterfront. Choose the parts of the monument you want to see using current National Park Service guidance, especially for tide-pool access. The monument is a separate destination from the naval facilities on the peninsula. Leave time for the return through Point Loma rather than treating the map distance as the whole trip.

Making the most of a longer stay
Keep the naval locations separate
Naval Base San Diego, Naval Base Coronado and Naval Base Point Loma serve different parts of the region. Confirm the command’s actual reporting location before comparing homes advertised simply as near the Navy base. A property that is convenient for one waterfront may require a very different trip to another. If the assignment includes multiple locations, compare how often each trip occurs. That information should guide the housing search before the amenities list does.
Make a city rental work for several months
Ask about assigned parking, vehicle clearance, building entry, package delivery and laundry, especially in an apartment or condominium. Confirm whether the bedroom and workspace are private if sharing the home. For a household, compare groceries and family destinations with the work route. Keep sightseeing flexible: the park, waterfront and Point Loma are distinct outing areas. A reliable home routine leaves more room to enjoy San Diego without spending every free day solving logistics.

Local tips
Contact the lodging provider early enough to confirm the full stay, especially when traveling with a pet or a household needing a particular room type. Pet policies differ by property and room inventory, so verify the specific reservation rather than relying on a region-wide claim.
