Getting there
Travelers flying into Chicago O'Hare can find help at a Military Information Detachment inside the USO facility at Terminal 2, which assists with arranging transportation to Great Lakes; the Airport Express van service also runs to and from O'Hare.

Lodging
Navy Lodge Great Lakes, located at 2500 Meridian Drive, is pet-friendly and includes amenities like complimentary breakfast, free WiFi, a fitness center, and a playground, making it a practical option whether on PCS orders or traveling for training or leisure.
Navy Gateway Inn & Suites sits on the main side of the installation and serves PCS, leisure, and TDY travelers holding a valid DOW-issued ID card, specializing in official business accommodations.
For those preferring off-base stays, several pet-friendly hotels are scattered through Lake County communities such as Gurnee, Libertyville, Waukegan, Grayslake, and Vernon Hills, giving families traveling with pets more flexibility than on-base lodging alone.

Housing & nearby communities
Great Lakes primarily supports unaccompanied housing for single or geographically separated sailors, with barracks-style rooms in Buildings 430 through 439 assigned one or two persons per room depending on pay grade, plus on-site lounges, laundry, and vending amenities within walking distance.
Geographic Bachelors—those whose dependents live elsewhere—are not normally authorized in Unaccompanied Housing by default and must apply through an Assignment Review Board, then wait for space-available placement, a process worth starting early if applicable.

What to look for in a furnished home
A home that fits your routine
Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.
Compare the full arrangement
Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.
Settle the important details early
For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.
Choosing a nearby community
North Chicago: the installation’s immediate city
North Chicago is home to Naval Station Great Lakes and provides the most direct city-based starting point for the search. Confirm the command, school or event location before selecting a rental. A traveler attending a course, someone supporting the installation and a graduation visitor may have different access and accommodation needs. Compare the property’s parking, privacy and work setup as well as the route. A convenient address should still support the actual length and purpose of the stay.
Waukegan: a broader Lake County setting
Waukegan is a larger neighboring city on Lake Michigan and expands the available residential settings. It is useful to compare when a specific home offers the layout or household features you need. Ask for the full address and evaluate the work route, groceries and any family destinations together. For a longer stay, confirm heating, parking and laundry rather than selecting only for the city’s lakefront position. The routine within Waukegan can vary substantially by property.
Lake Bluff: a village alternative
Lake Bluff is another community to consider in the Great Lakes region, with a village setting distinct from the neighboring cities. Compare individual homes based on the route to your duty location and the needs of everyone staying there. If using rail for regional outings, evaluate the trip to the station separately from the trip to work. A station in the community does not establish that the entire assignment can be managed without a vehicle.

Schools & childcare
The installation operates a Navy School Liaison out of Building 8100, a point of contact for families navigating local school enrollment questions, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Healthcare
The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center at 3001 Green Bay Road is the only military medical treatment facility in the Chicago area and the Midwest, offering combined inpatient and outpatient care to active-duty personnel, DEERS-eligible dependents, and eligible veterans as space allows.
Routine care follows a strict priority order, with active-duty personnel seen first, followed by TRICARE Prime family members and retirees, meaning non-enrolled beneficiaries may face longer waits for appointments on a space-available basis.
Branch medical clinics also operate directly within Recruit Training Command and Training Support Command buildings, and dental care on base is limited to active-duty members.

Everyday services
For everyday transit beyond the base, Pace Suburban Bus and Metra commuter rail connect the surrounding Lake County area to greater Chicago, with the Ventra app consolidating fares across Pace, Metra, and CTA for anyone commuting or exploring the region.
Utility setup for anyone settling nearby can start with InMyArea.com, which lets new arrivals compare providers by ZIP code rather than guessing at options.

Off duty
National Museum of the American Sailor
The National Museum of the American Sailor at Great Lakes focuses on the history and experience of enlisted sailors. It is a particularly relevant outing for someone visiting the Navy’s recruit-training community. Check current visitor hours and access instructions before planning the visit. Museum access, a graduation event and entry to other parts of the installation are separate arrangements. Allow time for the exhibits rather than treating the stop only as a place to wait between scheduled activities.
Illinois Beach State Park
Illinois Beach State Park preserves Lake Michigan shoreline along with dunes, wetlands and other habitats. It gives a stay in the region an outdoor option beyond urban sightseeing. Choose a specific access area and activity using current Illinois state-park information. The conditions at the lake can differ from those at the rental, so prepare for the place you will actually visit. A focused walk or day-use visit can fit a limited period of free time.
Chicago Botanic Garden
Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe includes a large collection of display gardens and natural areas. It is a regional outing that can be tailored to the season and the interests of the group. Check current admission, parking and exhibition details before going. Choose a few areas rather than attempting to see every garden in one visit. For a household on a longer assignment, it offers a change of scene without needing to make downtown Chicago the destination every time.

Making the most of a longer stay
Separate training rules from visitor lodging
Great Lakes serves different groups with different schedules and restrictions. Confirm whether you are arranging your own authorized lodging, supporting a student or visiting for a graduation. A recruit’s required accommodations and liberty rules are not changed by a family’s rental booking. For visitors staying in your home, clarify guest limits and parking with the host. Keeping those arrangements distinct prevents a convenient property from being mistaken for permission to alter a training requirement.
Plan for the entire season of the stay
If your assignment crosses into colder weather, ask about heating, vehicle parking and responsibility for snow or ice around the property. Confirm a comfortable indoor workspace and laundry arrangement. For regional outings, use current rail or road information and include the final trip back to the rental. A dependable local routine in North Chicago, Waukegan or Lake Bluff leaves more flexibility to explore the lakefront and gardens when time permits.

Local tips
Because Great Lakes sits between two major metro economies, the surrounding area is described as a high-cost region — a detail worth budgeting for if arranging longer-term off-base stays in Lake County.
If arriving with a pet and needing off-base lodging, several Lake County chain hotels explicitly allow pets, which can save last-minute scrambling compared to relying solely on base lodging.
Anyone with school-age dependents should contact the Navy School Liaison at Building 8100 early, since local school enrollment and transition questions are funneled through that single office rather than base-wide administration.
