Lodging

The Navy Lodge at 1290 USS Andrew Jackson Road offers 25 rooms, including one handicap-accessible unit, all non-smoking, with 24-hour phone service available. It sits about three miles from the Navy Exchange Retail Complex, making it a reasonably central option for a first stop after arrival or a short TDY stay.

For those on official travel orders, the Navy Gateway Inns and Suites is designated as the preferred lodging choice, and it is also open to retirees, DoD and NAF employees, and sponsored guests traveling on leisure business. Booking early is worthwhile given the base's relatively small on-base lodging footprint.

Housing & nearby communities

Families reporting to Kings Bay can choose between privatized housing on base, managed by Balfour Beatty Communities, or homes out in the surrounding community, with the Housing Service Center able to assist either way.

The base borders St. Marys, Georgia, a historic coastal town, which is the most directly named nearby community for those considering off-base housing.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

06

Choosing a nearby community

St. Marys: the immediate coastal community

St. Marys is in Camden County on the river that forms the nearby Georgia–Florida boundary. It is a natural starting point for a Kings Bay search and has a distinct waterfront town center. Compare the property with the actual duty location before choosing for the coastal setting. Ask about parking, cooling, internet and the private space included. A home suitable for a brief coastal visit may have a different setup from the rental you want for several months of work and study.

Kingsland: another Camden County base

Kingsland is a separate city in the same county and gives the housing search another orientation to the regional road network. It can be useful when a particular home offers the right layout or access to everyday errands. Compare the complete drive to Kings Bay and any family destinations rather than deciding solely from the city name. For a shared stay, confirm independent parking and private bedrooms before assuming a larger occupancy count means a comfortable arrangement.

Yulee: a cross-state comparison

Yulee is in Nassau County, Florida, south of the Georgia border. It broadens the search for travelers who have a reason to consider the Florida side of the region. The full commute and any school or household implications should be evaluated before committing. A cross-state property may be a good fit, but it is not automatically equivalent to a St. Marys or Kingsland address. Compare the home’s concrete advantages with the routine it will require.

Schools & childcare

The Navy School Liaison office, located at 650 USS Wahoo Avenue, serves as the point of contact for families navigating local school enrollment questions, with weekday office hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. School enrollment is determined by home address, so families should confirm their specific school assignment with local school district officials or the School Liaison rather than assuming a particular school based on proximity to base.

For childcare, the Navy MWR Kings Bay Child Development Center and School Age Care program operates out of Building 0166 on Wahoo Avenue, open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on federal holidays. Families with young children or school-age kids needing before/after care should reach out directly given the specific operating hours.

Healthcare

The Naval Branch Health Clinic Kings Bay, located at 881 USS James Madison Road, is one of five branch clinics under Naval Hospital Jacksonville and delivers care to active duty, families, and retirees. It holds The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval and Primary Care Medical Home Certification, reflecting a consistent quality standard for routine and preventive visits.

Importantly, NBHC Kings Bay does not have an emergency room, so anyone facing a medical emergency needs to go to the nearest civilian ER rather than the base clinic. Appointments for the clinic run through Naval Hospital Jacksonville's centralized scheduling line, and the clinic also offers dental care for active duty and occupational health services on site.

Everyday services

The Housing Service Center, located in Building 180 on USS Andrew Jackson Boulevard, doubles as a resource for utility hookups, directing residents to services like InMyArea.com to compare local utility providers by ZIP code. This kind of practical support can shorten the settling-in process for anyone moving into off-base housing in Camden County.

For medications, the clinic supports Pharmacy Home Delivery through Express Scripts, letting beneficiaries skip a pharmacy trip by having prescriptions mailed instead.

Off duty

Cumberland Island National Seashore

Cumberland Island is reached by boat, with public ferry arrangements based in St. Marys. That makes reservations, the return schedule and what you carry part of the outing from the beginning. Use the National Park Service and ferry operator’s current information before choosing a date. The island’s beaches, historic sites and natural landscape reward a planned visit with time to explore. It is not a destination to add casually after another full day of activities.

Crooked River State Park

Crooked River State Park near St. Marys preserves coastal forest and salt-marsh habitat. It provides a land-based outdoor alternative when an island trip is too involved for the available time. Choose a trail or day-use activity using the state park’s current information. Check any arrangements for camping, boating or equipment separately. A focused local visit can give a satisfying sense of the coastal landscape without depending on a ferry schedule.

Fort Clinch State Park

Fort Clinch State Park is on Amelia Island near Fernandina Beach, Florida, and combines a historic coastal fort with beaches and natural areas. It offers a different regional outing from Cumberland Island or Crooked River. Check current park and fort visiting arrangements before going. Decide whether your priority is the historic site or the outdoor areas so the day remains manageable. The Florida location also makes it worth planning the route and return rather than assuming it is part of the immediate Kings Bay neighborhood.

Making the most of a longer stay

Choose the daily routine before the coastal view

Kings Bay’s surrounding communities provide access to an appealing coastal region, but the work schedule should still shape the shortlist. Compare St. Marys, Kingsland and any Florida-side option against the actual duty site and household needs. Ask about cooling, laundry and a workspace, plus parking and visitor rules if the rental is part of a shared property. Those details remain useful every day, including weeks when there is no time for a coastal excursion.

Use boat trips and local parks differently

Cumberland Island requires a deliberate plan around transport and the return time. Crooked River can serve a more flexible local outdoor day, while Fort Clinch is a separate regional visit. Keeping these distinctions clear helps avoid an overfilled itinerary. For a long assignment, choose one destination at a time and leave room for rest and ordinary errands. Check current weather and visitor notices for the specific activity you intend to do.

Local tips

Pay attention to which gate you plan to use: Stimson Avenue is open 24/7, but Franklin Avenue closes overnight and on weekends, so late arrivals or weekend errands should route through Stimson to avoid being turned away.

If you're flying in, budget for the drive from Jacksonville International Airport, roughly 30 to 35 miles north on I-95, and know that cab fares can vary; coordinating transportation with your command sponsor ahead of time avoids surprises after a long flight.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an emergency room at the base clinic?
No. The Naval Branch Health Clinic Kings Bay does not have an ER, so anyone with a medical emergency needs to seek care at the nearest civilian emergency room.
How long is the wait for on-base family housing?
The Housing Service Center manages 449 privatized family homes, and the average wait for a spot runs three to twelve months, so reaching out to housing as early as possible after orders are cut is worthwhile.
Should I look in St. Marys or Kingsland?
Start with both and compare actual addresses with the installation and your household routine. St. Marys offers a coastal-town setting, while Kingsland provides another regional orientation. The property’s layout and daily route should decide, not a universal ranking of the two cities.
Can I include Florida properties?
Yulee and other Florida-side options may be worth comparing if the full route works. Consider all household implications, including schools and regular errands. A cross-state search should be driven by a specific need or better-fitting home rather than simply a larger radius.
Can I visit Cumberland Island without advance planning?
Use the current ferry and National Park Service guidance before deciding. Boat access, the return schedule and what you need to bring are central to the trip. If you have only a short free period, consider a land-based local outing instead.
