Getting there

The base is easily reached from Interstate 95, and the closest major airports are Bradley International Airport in Hartford and T.F. Green Airport in Providence, each roughly an hour away, with Boston Logan and New York's JFK and LaGuardia about two hours out.

Lodging

Anyone arriving on official orders should check with Navy Gateway Inns & Suites, now called the Navy Inn, in Building 429 before booking off-base lodging; if the Inn is full, staff can issue a Certificate of Non-Availability needed to authorize alternate lodging. Rooms here typically come with a private bath, cable TV, a Keurig, and a micro-fridge.

The Navy Lodge New London, at 2 Proteus Avenue, is a separate option that gives first priority to Navy and Marine Corps families on PCS orders and can sleep up to five people per unit, with kitchenettes and up to two pets allowed per reservation. It's open year-round and reservations should still be verified against Navy Gateway Inns & Suites availability first.

Housing & nearby communities

Family housing at SUBASE New London is fully privatized under the Military Housing Privatization Initiative and managed by Beacon Point Homes (formerly Balfour Beatty), spread across eight distinct neighborhoods of duplexes, quadruplexes, and some single-family homes just outside the gates in the Groton area.

Wait times for privatized housing vary considerably by rank and bedroom size; recent estimates showed junior enlisted families waiting one to three months for a 2-3 bedroom unit, while senior personnel seeking larger 4-bedroom homes could wait five to seven months.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

06

Choosing a nearby community

Groton: the submarine base is on this side of the river

Despite the installation’s New London name, Naval Submarine Base New London is in Groton on the eastern side of the Thames River. Begin here when comparing the most straightforward geographic relationship to the base. Groton includes different communities and addresses, so still check the specific route and entrance. Ask about parking, heating, laundry and the workspace for a multi-month stay. A home near a maritime attraction is not automatically the same as a home convenient for your training building.

New London: across the Thames

New London is a separate seaport city on the opposite side of the Thames River. Its city setting, waterfront and regional connections may appeal to travelers, but the crossing belongs in the commute comparison. Consider the actual reporting hours and the property’s parking arrangement before choosing. The presence of other military and maritime institutions in New London does not make them the same destination as the submarine base. Use the exact duty address to avoid that confusion.

Ledyard and Gales Ferry: another east-side option

Ledyard includes the Gales Ferry area and offers another residential search on the eastern side of the Thames region. It can be useful when a specific home provides a better household layout or a different setting from the cities. Check the actual address, work route and access to everyday services. For families, confirm school assignment with the local district. A broader town name should not replace the practical comparison of the property and the routine it creates.

Schools & childcare

Children living in privatized base housing attend the Groton School District, but families living elsewhere should confirm their local school district based on their home address.

The Navy Child Development Center on Highland Avenue in Groton offers full-day care for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years on weekdays, and is NAEYC-accredited. Families should also know the Coast Guard Academy across the river operates its own Child Development Center in New London as another local option.

Healthcare

The Naval Branch Health Clinic Groton, on Wahoo Avenue, is the primary care hub for active-duty families, organizing patients into color-coded care teams of nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians.

Dental care is available through the Naval Branch Dental Clinic in Building 575, next to the main clinic building, offering routine and specialty services along with overseas screening appointments for family members. For urgent needs after hours, patients can reach on-call dental staff through the command duty officer line.

Because TRICARE Select users here can see any authorized civilian provider without a referral, and the Groton/New London area has multiple private hospitals and specialty clinics, families with specialty needs are not limited strictly to the on-base clinic.

Everyday services

The Housing Service Center in Building 83 functions as a broad support office beyond just housing placement, offering lease reviews, help with landlord disputes, and referrals for those pursuing off-base rentals, which is useful given how tight the local rental market can run.

Off duty

Submarine Force Museum and USS Nautilus

The Submarine Force Museum on the Thames in Groton preserves the history of the submarine force and is associated with the historic USS Nautilus. It is an especially relevant first outing during an assignment here. Check the current museum and submarine visiting arrangements separately before planning around access to both. Review accessibility details if ladders or confined spaces affect your group. A museum visit provides context for the mission without granting access to operational submarine facilities.

Mystic Seaport Museum

Mystic Seaport Museum combines historic vessels, maritime collections and a recreated seaport village. It offers a broader view of the region’s seafaring history beyond submarines. Allow enough time to explore the areas that interest you, and check which ships, buildings and demonstrations are available on your date. It is a substantial destination rather than a quick roadside stop. During a longer stay, choose a day when you can enjoy the site without rushing between distant attractions.

Bluff Point State Park

Bluff Point is a coastal recreation area and reserve on a peninsula in Groton, with woodland, shoreline and wetland settings. It provides an outdoor alternative close to the local community. Use designated routes and current Connecticut park information to plan the visit. Choose a manageable walk and prepare for conditions at the shore rather than assuming they match the rental’s neighborhood. It is a useful place to return for shorter outings over an extended assignment.

Making the most of a longer stay

Let the Thames crossing be a deliberate choice

A map of the New London–Groton region can make the two sides of the river look interchangeable. For daily duty, compare the complete journey from each property, including the entrance and destination on base. A New London home may still be the right fit for a household, but the crossing should be understood before choosing. If sharing, check whether both travelers have the same work location and hours before planning a common commute.

Set up for study and coastal New England life

Ask about heating, laundry, parking and a comfortable desk or table before selecting a furnished rental. If the stay crosses seasons, clarify exterior maintenance responsibilities and the contact for repairs. Keep maritime museums and shoreline walks as flexible options for time off. A dependable local routine in Groton, New London or Ledyard will make it easier to enjoy the region without spending every weekend catching up on household tasks.

Local tips

New arrivals should expect the New London-Groton area's cost of living to run well above the national average, driven mostly by housing costs, so those budgeting for a longer TDY or PCS should plan for higher rents and grocery costs than many other duty stations.

Frequently asked questions

Where do families get everyday medical and dental care?
The Naval Branch Health Clinic Groton on Wahoo Avenue handles primary care and is paired with a dental clinic in a nearby building; appointments for both go through the centralized Naval Health Clinic New England call center rather than walk-in scheduling.
Is the submarine base actually in New London?
The installation is in Groton, across the Thames from the city of New London. That distinction matters when choosing lodging. Use the base’s actual duty location and entrance to compare properties rather than relying on the installation name alone.
Should I include Gales Ferry in the search?
It can be a useful comparison within the town of Ledyard. Evaluate the full address, route and household needs against Groton and New London properties. A different residential setting is valuable only if it supports the daily assignment.
Can I visit USS Nautilus during the stay?
Check the Submarine Force Museum’s current visitor information for the museum and the historic submarine. Access and opening arrangements can differ. Plan around the experience currently offered rather than assuming every exhibit or ship space is always available.
