Overview

The Presidio of Monterey is an Army garrison whose primary mission is delivering base operations support to the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, a joint-service school that teaches foreign languages to thousands of military linguists each year.

Getting there

The Monterey Peninsula Airport is the closest airport to the installation, and new arrivals typically get from the airport to post via unit staff duty (for those arriving from Basic Training), rental car, public transportation, or taxi, since rental car costs are not reimbursable based on standard orders.

Lodging

On-post temporary lodging is available through Presidio of Monterey (IHG) Lodging at Building 366 on Kit Carson Road, and separately at the Naval Postgraduate School's Del Monte Hotel, but both require advance reservations, ideally made as soon as orders are received.

Pet-friendly options are limited: POM Lodging has only two pet-designated units with an added fee, the Del Monte Hotel has some pet rooms with a surcharge, and the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites enforces a strict no-pet policy for its permanent change of station guests.

Because Monterey draws heavy year-round tourism, off-post hotels and motels can sell out and carry prices well above what travelers might expect from the same chains elsewhere, so booking early and confirming rates is worth the effort even for budget-conscious travelers.

Housing & nearby communities

Nearly all family housing for Presidio and Naval Postgraduate School personnel is concentrated at The Parks at Monterey Bay, spanning La Mesa Village and the Ord Military Community on former Fort Ord land, with just over 2,500 units currently available and additional construction underway.

A phased Residential Communities Initiative is replacing older housing on Ord Military Community with new privatized homes, meaning some disruption to family housing should be expected during construction even as the long-term result improves availability and quality.

What to look for in a furnished home

A home that fits your routine

Build your shortlist around the life you will actually lead during this assignment. A quiet bedroom, a table large enough for studying, reliable internet and a usable kitchen often matter more over several months than a long amenities list. Ask to see the workspace and cooking equipment in the listing photos. If two travelers share a home, check the number of private bedrooms, bathroom arrangements and parking spaces before comparing the price. A second bed in a living room is a different arrangement from a second bedroom.

Compare the full arrangement

Look at the complete stay, including the first and last partial months. Request a written breakdown of rent, utilities, parking, pet charges, cleaning and any deposit. Ask which services are included, whether internet is shared, and who handles maintenance. A monthly headline price alone cannot tell you the total cost. Keep the agreed dates, inclusions and house rules together so that a change to one detail does not leave the rest of the arrangement unclear.

Settle the important details early

For an extended stay, explain any unusual needs before choosing a property: shift work, a pet, a second vehicle, stairs you cannot comfortably use, visiting family or a need for a particularly quiet study area. Ask what happens if the assignment dates change and how much notice the property needs. Confirm the agreed terms in your paperwork. This guide helps you compare the area; it does not establish a particular property’s availability, included benefits or the lodging allowance approved for your orders.

Choosing a nearby community

Monterey: close to the peninsula’s historic center

Monterey combines a historic city setting with the Presidio and a prominent waterfront visitor area. It is an appealing place to begin a housing search, but the exact location matters for a language student’s daily routine. Ask about a quiet workspace, internet and parking, then compare the route to the part of the Presidio you will use. A rental near the waterfront may be attractive for weekends while a different address better supports early classes and evening study.

Seaside: a separate community with regional connections

Seaside is a separate city on Monterey Bay and a gateway to the former Fort Ord landscape. It broadens the housing search beyond Monterey itself and can be useful when a particular home offers the right household layout. Compare the work route and the property’s parking and laundry arrangement. For families, confirm the school serving the exact address. A home described as being in the Monterey area may actually belong to another municipality with a different daily pattern.

Marina: farther around the bay

Marina lies along Highway 1 northeast of Monterey and includes part of the former Fort Ord area. It is another useful comparison community, especially when searching for a home suitable for a longer household stay. Evaluate the full trip to the Presidio before deciding that additional space justifies the location. Ask about the particular unit’s stairs, parking and internet. A broader search is most useful when it responds to a concrete need rather than simply maximizing the number of listings.

Schools & childcare

Families with school-age children should start with the Army School Liaison office at Building 4260 on Gigling Road in the Ord Military Community, which serves as the installation's dedicated point of contact for school support matters.

For younger children, Child and Youth Services central registration and the Child Development Center operate out of the Stilwell Community Center on Ord Military Community, Building 4260, with standard weekday business hours and closures on weekends and holidays.

Healthcare

The Presidio of Monterey Army Health Clinic at Building 422 on Cabrillo Street handles active-duty care, but family members and retirees generally rely on the Pediatric Medical Home Clinic-Family Medicine Clinic at the Gourley VA-DoD Outpatient Clinic in Marina, plus three civilian hospitals in the Monterey community for broader needs.

For specialty or complex care not available locally, patients are referred to David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base, about 140 miles away, or Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, roughly 90 miles away — a notable distance that families should factor into planning for ongoing medical needs.

Dental care on post is limited to one clinic serving active-duty personnel only, so family members should enroll in the TRICARE dental program to arrange coverage through civilian providers in the area.

Everyday services

The Housing Services Office, located in Building 4250 on General Jim Boulevard at Ord Military Community, is the go-to resource for off-post rental questions, landlord-tenant disputes, and information about surrounding neighborhoods, in addition to handling Exceptional Family Member Program housing coordination.

Off duty

Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Monterey Bay Aquarium focuses strongly on the marine environment of the bay, including kelp-forest and open-water exhibits. It gives a local stay a connection to the coastline beyond the view from shore. Allow enough time to explore the exhibits that interest you and check current admission arrangements before visiting. For a long assignment, consider whether repeat visits genuinely fit your routine before choosing a membership. It can also provide an indoor option when a planned coastal walk does not suit the weather.

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Point Lobos protects coastal scenery and wildlife habitat south of Carmel. It is a distinct nature outing from the city waterfront and deserves a plan based on current park conditions. Choose a manageable trail, use designated routes and allow time for observation rather than trying to cover every viewpoint. Check parking and entry information before driving there. Its protected setting rewards a slower visit, especially when you have been spending much of the week indoors studying.

Fort Ord National Monument

Fort Ord National Monument preserves part of the former Army post as a public landscape. Designated trails offer a different outdoor experience from the coast, with a direct connection to the region’s military history. Use the Bureau of Land Management’s current maps and stay within areas open to the public. The former installation is not one unrestricted recreation space. Pick a route appropriate to your available time and the conditions rather than assuming every visible track is intended for visitors.

Making the most of a longer stay

Make study space a real requirement

A language-training assignment can make the home’s workspace particularly important. Ask for a photo of the desk or table, confirm internet arrangements and consider whether a roommate’s schedule will interrupt study or sleep. Separate bedrooms alone may not provide separate quiet work areas. If sharing, discuss how common rooms will be used before choosing the property. A comfortable, repeatable evening routine can matter more than a large entertainment area you rarely have time to use.

Use the peninsula in smaller outings

Monterey Bay’s attractions are close enough in theme to tempt an overfilled itinerary, but they offer different experiences. Spend one free period at the aquarium, another on a designated coastal trail and another exploring Fort Ord. Leave room for ordinary life: groceries, laundry, family activities and rest. If bringing a household, compare school and childcare destinations with the class route. The best home is one that supports the whole assignment rather than only the days when you are sightseeing.

Local tips

New arrivals should call the Parks at Monterey Bay housing line immediately upon receiving orders, since securing a home or deciding whether to delay a family's move depends heavily on early contact given how tight and costly off-post alternatives are.

Frequently asked questions

Should I search only within Monterey?
No. Seaside and Marina provide additional comparison areas around the bay. Match the actual property to your class location, study needs and household routine. A different city may offer a better-fitting home, but the work route should be checked before committing.
What matters most for a language student’s rental?
A quiet sleep and study arrangement, dependable internet and a usable workspace deserve explicit attention. Confirm them with the host instead of assuming furnished means equipped for intensive study. Shared homes also need clear arrangements for common-room use and differing schedules.
Are Presidio and former Fort Ord destinations interchangeable?
No. The Presidio, other military facilities and the public national monument are distinct locations. Use your orders for the reporting destination and the managing agency’s maps for recreation. A general Monterey-area label is not enough to identify either route.
