Altus trains more than 2,000 mobility aircrew and maintainers a year, and almost all of them arrive on temporary duty (TDY) orders with a course date, a set of lodging rules nobody explained, and a town of about 19,000 people to figure out. Altus AFB TDY lodging is not complicated once you see the whole picture, but the order you do things in matters — call the wrong number second instead of first and you can lose a few hundred dollars over a three-month course. Start with the crashpads near Altus AFB page if you already have dates; read on if you want to understand the money first.
This is written for the people who actually show up here: C-17 Formal Training Unit (FTU) students, KC-46 and KC-135 initial and requalification students, instructor upgrades, maintenance training classes, and staff officers on long mobility TDYs. The 97th Air Mobility Wing runs the schoolhouse under Air Education and Training Command. The runway is 13,440 feet of concrete at 1,382 feet elevation, the wind almost never stops, and the nearest real airport is Lawton-Fort Sill Regional (LAW), about 55 minutes away. For gate hours, neighborhoods, and the rest of the base picture, the full Altus AFB guide covers it.
What does Altus AFB TDY lodging actually mean for you?
Three things decide what your stay costs and what you keep:
- The per diem ceiling. Altus falls under the GSA standard CONUS locality for Oklahoma. For fiscal year 2026 that is $110 per night for lodging and $68 per day for meals and incidental expenses (M&IE) before adjustments, with travel days paid at 75 percent — $51. Rate data checked 11 September 2026. Always verify your exact nights on the live Altus AFB per diem page, especially if your course crosses 1 October, when the fiscal year rolls over.
- Whether on-base lodging is available. If the Red River Inn has a room, you are generally expected to take it. If it does not, you need a non-availability (non-A) number before you book anything downtown.
- Whether your receipts survive the voucher. Lodging is reimbursed at actual cost up to the ceiling, and it requires an itemized receipt. M&IE is paid as a flat allowance and does not.
That is the whole system. Lodging money is a reimbursement — spend less than $110 and you keep nothing extra, spend more and you eat the difference. M&IE is yours regardless of what you actually eat. Which is why where you sleep at Altus is mostly a quality-of-life decision inside a fixed budget, not a savings decision.
The Red River Inn, first call
Air Force Inns lodging at Altus is the Red River Inn, Building 82 at 307 B Avenue. The front desk is staffed 24 hours. Reservations: 580-481-7356 (DSN 866-7356). Room types include visiting quarters, 24 family-friendly suites with kitchenettes, distinguished visitor quarters, and 30 temporary lodging facility (TLF) units for permanent change of station (PCS) families on a 15-day limit. Pet-friendly rooms carry an extra $10 per stay.
Call the day your orders drop. Classes overlap, KC-46 throughput keeps climbing, and Altus has only a handful of hotels in town. When the inn fills, they fill fast behind it. If the inn cannot house you, get the non-availability number in writing — an email or a confirmation number, not a verbal "we're full." You can estimate nightly government rates across installations with the on-base lodging cost calculator before you commit either way.
What rules decide the money on an Altus TDY?
The Joint Travel Regulation (JTR) governs all of this in general terms, but the practical version is short.
Lodging is actual cost, capped. A $95 room reimburses $95. A $140 room reimburses $110 and costs you $30 a night out of pocket — about $900 over a 30-night course. Run your real dates through the TDY per diem calculator so you know your ceiling before you talk to any landlord or hotel.
M&IE is flat. At $68 a day with $51 on travel days, a place with a real kitchen changes your grocery math significantly over a long course. That is the single biggest financial difference between a hotel room and a furnished house, and it is why so many FTU students look at a military crashpad instead of ten weeks of continental breakfast.
Non-A paperwork is not optional. If you stay off base without a non-availability number on file, your Defense Travel System (DTS) voucher can be returned or your lodging reimbursement reduced. The non-availability lodging walkthrough covers who issues it, what DTS wants attached, and the mistakes that cost people money.
Receipts must be itemized. Not a credit card statement. Not a Venmo screenshot. A dated, itemized receipt showing nightly rate, taxes and fees, and the dates covered. Any lodging that cannot produce that is a problem waiting for your voucher.
Orders change. Weather cancels sorties. Maintenance slips a syllabus line. Students get added to the next class. Ask any lodging option — hotel, landlord, or crashpad host — what happens if your end date moves 14 days in either direction, and get the answer before you sign.
Where should you live in Altus, and what does it cost?
Altus is small. Almost everything is within 10 minutes of the gate, which is why we target crashpads inside a 10-to-15-minute drive. The Main Gate on Falcon Road is the 24/7 arrival gate with the Visitor Control Center (open Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The Jasmine and South gates are also open 24/7 for commuters with a Common Access Card (CAC).
| Area | What it is | Drive to the gate |
|---|---|---|
| North Altus (Sunset, Tamarack, Country Club) | The closest thing Altus has to a newer subdivision — brick ranches from the 1990s through the 2010s | ~7 min |
| Central and East Altus | Older 1950s-70s homes on wide streets, near Altus High and the hospital on East Pecan | ~8 min |
| Base housing (Balfour Beatty, 8 neighborhoods) | 530 privatized homes, two to four bedrooms, all pet friendly, elementary school in the neighborhood | ~3 min |
| Blair | Town of 800 about 14 miles northeast, small K-12 district, acreage lots | ~20 min |
| Olustee and Frederick | Rural, 14 to 30 miles south, big lots and low prices | ~20-35 min |
On a short TDY, none of the outlying towns make sense. You want to be north or central, or on base. On a six-month instructor upgrade or a PCS, the calculus changes.
If you are PCSing, not TDY
Balfour Beatty Communities manages the 530 on-base homes; the leasing office is at 700 Legacy Lane, 580-481-7235 (DSN 866-7235), and the government Housing Management Office at 401 L Avenue shares that number. Off base, your Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) applies. For 2026 in military housing area OK235, published tables show roughly $1,254 for an E-5 with dependents ($1,032 without) and $1,833 for an O-3 with dependents ($1,449 without) — up about 5.8 percent from 2025. Confirm your grade and dependency status with the BAH calculator and the official DTMO tables before you plan around a number.
Plan for the weather
July averages a 97°F high; January averages a 51°F high and a 24°F low. Altus gets about 29 inches of rain a year, most of it in spring thunderstorms, and the wind is constant. Two practical notes: know where the shelter is at whatever you rent, and park under cover when hail is in the forecast. Rental car hail damage is a genuinely common Altus TDY expense.
What is the step-by-step plan?
- Read your authorization. Lodging authorized at actual cost up to the locality rate? Rental car? Government meal rate? These lines drive everything. The mechanics are broken down in TDY per diem explained.
- Look up your rate by date. Use the Altus per diem page for the exact nights. If you have TDYs at more than one installation this year, the per diem directory by base saves you time.
- Call the Red River Inn at 580-481-7356 the day you get orders. Ask for your full date range, not just the first week.
- If they are full, get the non-A number in writing. Save the email. Attach it in DTS.
- Shop off base against the $110 ceiling, not against the cheapest room. Kitchen, laundry, parking, and a real desk are worth more than $8 a night saved.
- Confirm the receipt format before you book. Itemized, dated, and issued to you.
- Ask about flexibility. What happens if the class slips two weeks? Get it in writing.
- File within five working days of returning. Attach every lodging receipt and the non-A documentation.
How does a crashpad fit at Altus?
Honest answer first: we are still expanding at Altus. Our inventory here is thinner than at bases like Columbus or Sheppard. If you have a C-17, KC-135, or KC-46 course date on the calendar, send us your dates and we will tell you the moment a furnished room inside the $110 rate opens up.
When a crashpad is available, the case for it is simple. A furnished house with a kitchen, a washer and dryer, a driveway, and space to actually study for a checkride is a different experience than a hotel room for eleven weeks — at the same voucher line. Every stay comes with itemized, DTS-ready receipts, because a cheap room that blows up your voucher is not cheap.
The process is short. You post your base and dates, vetted local hosts bid, we pick the top three, and you choose. That is how Base Crashpads works, start to finish. It was built by an active-duty Air Force pilot who files the same vouchers you do, and it now covers furnished homes in twelve states.
If Altus does not have an open room when you need it, a hotel plus a good non-A number is a perfectly fine answer. Just make sure it is at or under the ceiling and that the front desk can produce an itemized folio.
Find a crashpad near your base — post your dates for Altus or any of the bases we cover, and see what hosts bid. It takes about a minute, and there is no cost to look.
Frequently asked questions
Is off-base lodging reimbursable at Altus AFB?
Yes, when on-base lodging is unavailable. Call the Red River Inn at 580-481-7356 first. If it is full, you receive a non-availability number and can lodge commercially, reimbursed at actual cost up to the FY2026 standard CONUS rate for Altus — $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE, or $51 on travel days. Keep the non-A documentation and attach it to your DTS voucher.
Which gate do I use, and what do I need to get on base?
The Main Gate on Falcon Road is the 24/7 arrival gate and has the Visitor Control Center, open Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Jasmine and South gates are also open 24/7 for commuters. A CAC gets you through any gate. Visitors need a REAL ID-compliant license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance.
Is there a hospital on Altus AFB?
No. The 97th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic (appointments 580-481-5235) with no emergency room. Emergencies go to Jackson County Memorial Hospital at 1200 E Pecan Street in Altus, 580-379-5000, which has a 24/7 ER. Major trauma is transferred or flown out.
How far is the nearest airport?
Lawton-Fort Sill Regional (LAW) is about 55 minutes from the base. Altus is in the Central time zone. Most travelers arriving through larger hubs drive in from Oklahoma City or Dallas-Fort Worth, so plan your rental car pickup accordingly.
Can my family stay with me during an FTU course?
On-base TLF units are intended for PCS families and carry a 15-day limit, so they are usually not the answer for a multi-month course. The Red River Inn also has 24 family-friendly suites with kitchenettes. Off base, a furnished house is often the practical option — just confirm your authorization covers only your lodging at the ceiling, and that any extra space is on you.
Does the $110 rate change during my course?
It can, if your dates cross 1 October, when the federal fiscal year turns over and GSA publishes new rates. Look up each night by date rather than assuming a single rate for the whole trip, and re-check before you file.
