Overview
Altus is where Air Mobility Command's crews are made. The 97th Air Mobility Wing, under AETC's 19th Air Force, runs the formal training units for the C-17 Globemaster III (58th Airlift Squadron), the KC-135 Stratotanker (54th Air Refueling Squadron), and the KC-46 Pegasus (56th Air Refueling Squadron), with the 97th Training Squadron handling academics and simulators for pilots, boom operators, and loadmasters. Roughly 1,200 permanent-party Airmen, about 2,000 civilians, and more than 2,000 students a year move through a base of some 5,000 people, and the 13,440-foot main runway stays busy over 300 flying days annually.
The base sits four miles northeast of Altus, Oklahoma, a farm-and-cotton town of about 18,000 in the state's southwest corner, an hour west of Lawton and two and a half hours from Oklahoma City. The climate is the story: July highs average 97°F and regularly top 100, January lows sit in the mid-20s, and spring brings the tornado and hail season that makes southwest Oklahoma famous. For a TDY traveler that means a car, sunscreen, a weather app, and a plan for where you will eat and sleep for the two to five months your course runs.
Weather
Altus averages a 97°F high and 70°F low in July, a 51°F high and 24°F low in January, and about 29 inches of rain a year, most of it in spring thunderstorms. Wind is constant, 100-degree days are normal from late June into September, and severe weather season runs April through June.
Best months
October-November and March-April
Tough months
July-August for heat over 100°F, and April-June for tornadoes, hail, and flash flooding
Getting there
- Fly into Lawton-Fort Sill Regional (LAW), about 52 miles and 55 minutes east on US-62, or Wichita Falls (SPS) to the southeast; Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City is roughly 140 miles and 2.5 hours but has far more flights. Rent a car at whichever airport you use, and get it on your orders: the Altus FSS lodging page recommends rental car authorization in case on-base lodging is unavailable.
- Altus has three gates, all open 24/7: the Main Gate on Falcon Road, the Jasmine Gate serving the communities north toward Friendship and Martha, and the South Gate for traffic from the south and east. Confirm current status on the altus.af.mil visitor page before you arrive, since construction closures happen.
- The Visitor Control Center is at the Main Gate and is open Monday-Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., handling visitor passes, DBIDS enrollment, and sponsored guests. After hours, use the Main Gate for emergency visitor requests. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license, registration, and proof of insurance; a CAC gets you through any gate.
- There is no traffic to speak of. The only access wrinkles are agricultural season (slow farm equipment on US-283 and OK-6) and severe-weather days, when the base may delay reporting; follow the 97th AMW Facebook page for status.

The crashpad option
We're expanding at Altus AFB. If you have a C-17, KC-135, or KC-46 course date on the calendar, send us your dates and we will let you know the moment a furnished room inside the $110 rate opens up, with DTS-ready receipts.
Altus AFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Balfour Beatty Communities (Altus AFB Homes) owns and manages 530 privatized family homes in eight neighborhoods, two- to four-bedroom floor plans, all pet friendly; the leasing office is at 700 Legacy Lane, 580-481-7235 (DSN 866-7235), and the government Housing Management Office at 401 L Avenue shares that number.
- L.
- Mendel Rivers Elementary sits inside the housing area.
- Off base, a three-bedroom rental in Altus typically runs about $700-$1,000 a month and the median home sells for roughly $130,000-$160,000 (2026 figures from PCS guides), so buying is realistic even on a three-year tour, though resale can be slow in a one-employer town.
BAH 2026 · MHA OK235
- 2026 BAH for MHA OK235 (Altus AFB) is approximately $1,254 for an E-5 with dependents ($1,032 without) and $1,833 for an O-3 with dependents ($1,449 without), per published 2026 tables, up about 5.8 percent from 2025.
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
North Altus (Sunset, Tamarack, and the Country Club side)
The closest thing Altus has to a newer subdivision: brick ranches from the 1990s-2010s, the golf course, and the quickest shot up US-283 to Falcon Road; most rentals here go to instructors and officers and lease fast.
Central and East Altus (near Altus High School)
Older 1950s-70s homes on wide streets, walkable to Altus High, the hospital on East Pecan, and the Main Street restaurants; the cheapest rents in town and the shortest drive to the South Gate.
Base housing (Balfour Beatty, 8 neighborhoods)
530 homes with L. Mendel Rivers Elementary in the neighborhood and everything a five-minute walk away; two- and three-bedroom units turn quickly, four-bedrooms carry a waitlist, so get on the list from your losing base.
Blair
A town of 800 about 14 miles northeast with its own small K-12 district and acreage lots at farm-country prices; families who want horses, quiet, and the Jasmine Gate route pick Blair.
Olustee and Frederick (south)
Rural living 14 to 30 miles south with big lots and very low prices, feeding the South Gate; realistic only if you are here for a full tour and do not mind driving to Altus for every errand.
Schools & childcare
- L. Mendel Rivers Elementary (PK-4), part of Altus Public Schools, is on base inside the housing area, and K-4 students living in base housing get priority placement. Older kids ride to Altus Intermediate, Altus Junior High, and Altus High School in town.
- Altus Public Schools is the district for the base and most of the city and earned Oklahoma's Purple Star military-friendly designation for the second time in 2026. Fourteen districts sit within 35 miles, including small rural options at Blair and Navajo; Southwest Technology Center and Western Oklahoma State College in Altus offer concurrent college credit for high schoolers.
- The School Liaison, Gwen Brakebill, is in the Mission Support Group building (Bldg 52, Suite 1501), 580-481-5439, Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Oklahoma requires age 4 by September 1 for public pre-K and age 5 by September 1 for kindergarten.
- The Child Development Center and Youth Center are run by the 97th FSS; request care through MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders, because infant rooms at a base this size carry a waitlist. Reach FSS at 580-481-1310 for the current CDC number.
Healthcare
- The 97th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic on base, not a hospital: primary care, flight medicine, dental, pharmacy, and limited specialty care for about 9,500 enrollees. Appointments open Monday-Friday at 6:30 a.m. at 580-481-5235 (DSN 312-866-5235) or through the MHS GENESIS patient portal. There is no emergency room.
- Emergencies go to Jackson County Memorial Hospital, 1200 E Pecan Street in Altus, 580-379-5000, a community hospital with a 24/7 emergency department; serious trauma and specialty cases are transferred to Lawton or Oklahoma City.
- Altus is in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance; update DEERS and your PCM assignment when you arrive.

- MWR
- Outdoor Recreation rents boats, kayaks, campers, and trailers for Lake Altus-Lugert and Quartz Mountain; the Auto Hobby Shop, library, and Galaxy Bowling Lanes round out the on-base options.
- FSS main line 580-481-1310.
- Newcomers
- Military & Family Readiness Center, 580-481-6761, runs the newcomer orientation and sponsorship program.
- The base opened in 1943 as an Army Air Forces pilot training field and has been Mobility's Hometown since the C-141 and KC-135 schoolhouses arrived in the 1960s.
Off duty

Quartz Mountain Nature Park
Twenty miles north of the base on OK-44, granite mountains rise straight out of the plains around Lake Altus-Lugert. Hike the New Horizon trail, climb at Baldy Point, swim off the beach, and stay at Quartz Mountain Lodge; the park has 119 full-hookup campsites if you bring the camper.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
An hour east past Lawton, the refuge has free-roaming bison, elk, and longhorns, a prairie dog town, and the drive up Mount Scott for the best view in Oklahoma. Stop at Meers Store on the way out for the burger that has been feeding Fort Sill and Altus crews for decades.

Museum of the Western Prairie
Right in Altus on North Hightower Street, this Oklahoma Historical Society museum covers the region from Comanche country through the cotton boom, with a reconstructed tipi and a half-dugout homestead. It is an easy afternoon and free or nearly so.

Great Plains State Park and Tom Steed Lake
About 30 miles northeast near Mountain Park, Tom Steed Reservoir is the closest big-water fishing for crappie and catfish, with trails and a campground that rarely fills. Outdoor Rec on base rents everything you need.

Lake Altus-Lugert and Altus City Reservoir
When it has water, Lake Altus-Lugert is the local boating and sailing spot; the Altus City Reservoir on the east edge of town has a disc golf course and steady fishing for channel cats and largemouth. Check lake levels, which swing wildly with drought.
Official site ↗Lawton and Fort Sill
Lawton, an hour east on US-62, is the errand and date-night run: Central Mall, chain restaurants, a movie theater, and the Fort Sill Field Artillery Museum. Medicine Park, the little cobblestone resort town at the refuge entrance, is a good stop on the way home.
Official site ↗Great Plains Stampede Rodeo and Altus events
The Great Plains Stampede PRCA rodeo hits Altus each August, the Rock-N-Rumble car show fills downtown in spring, and Altus's Jackson County Fair runs late summer. Small-town Friday night football at Altus High is worth one trip.
Insider tips
- 01Spring severe weather is not theoretical in Jackson County: know where your shelter is in your crashpad or hotel, keep the NWS Norman office's alerts on your phone, and park your rental under cover when hail is forecast because deductibles come out of your pocket.
- 02Summer heat stacks up: expect 100°F afternoons from late June through August with a steady south wind. Hydrate before you walk the flightline, and if your course runs through July, ask for a crashpad with good A/C and blackout curtains.
- 03Call the Red River Inn (580-481-7356) the day you get orders. Classes overlap, KC-46 throughput keeps climbing, and once the inn fills the four or five hotels in town go next. Get your non-availability number in writing before you book off base.
- 04All three gates are 24/7 but the Visitor Control Center is weekdays 6 a.m.-6 p.m. only. If you are bringing an unsponsored visitor or need DBIDS, do it on a weekday; after hours it is the Main Gate or nothing.
- 05Lawton (LAW) is the closest airport but flights are few and pricey. Compare Oklahoma City: the extra hour and a half on I-44 and US-62 is often worth it, and you will want the rental car anyway.
- 06PCS families: get on the Balfour Beatty waitlist from your losing base. Four-bedroom homes and the L. Mendel Rivers school zone are what everyone wants, and a three-month wait is common in summer.
- 07Altus is a 15-minute town with real limits: one Walmart, one hospital, no big-box electronics, and most restaurants close by 9. Stock up in Lawton or OKC on the way in, and set up Amazon delivery to your crashpad on day one.
- 08Pack for both seasons if you are here more than eight weeks. A January ice storm and a March 90-degree day can land in the same course, and the wind never stops, so bring a real windbreaker.
