Overview

Vance is a pilot factory. The 71st Flying Training Wing runs Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training for the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and allied nations, graduating roughly 370 to 400 new pilots a year from a fleet of about 200 T-6A Texan IIs, T-38C Talons, and T-1A Jayhawks. Four flying squadrons — the 8th and 33rd on the T-6, the 25th on the T-38, and the 3rd on the T-1 — fly more than 50,000 sorties and 74,000 hours annually off three parallel runways, which is why Vance's RAPCON is the second busiest in the country behind Nellis. Students, instructor pilots, sim instructors, and contract maintainers cycle through constantly, and classes start on a rolling calendar.

The base sits on the south edge of Enid, a wheat-and-oil town of about 51,000 people 70 miles north of Oklahoma City on the eastern edge of the Great Plains. Summers are hot (July averages 95°F), winters are windy and cold (January averages 47°F highs and 25°F lows), and spring is tornado season — an EF4 tornado hit the base's southern perimeter in April 2026. For a TDY traveler that means a rental car, a weather app with alerts turned on, and lodging booked before you land, because the on-base inn is small and the hotel supply is thin.

Weather

July averages a 95°F high and 72°F low with humidity and heat that can spike past 100; January averages 47°F highs and 25°F lows with wind chills that drop below zero. Spring brings severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and the wind rarely stops in any season.

Best months

April to early June and September to October

Tough months

July and August for heat; March to May for tornado and hail risk; January and February for ice and wind chill

Getting there

  • Fly into Will Rogers World Airport (OKC), rent a car, and drive about 90 miles north — roughly an hour and a half via I-35 to US-412 west, or US-81 north straight into Enid. Wichita (ICT) is a two-hour alternative. Enid's Woodring airport is general aviation only, and there is no practical public transit between OKC and Enid, so budget the rental car in your orders.
  • The main gate is on the south side of Enid off US-81 (South Van Buren) at Fields Street; the base address is 200 Fields St., Enid, OK 73705. Vance is a small base and gate hours change with the mission, so confirm current gate hours and any secondary-gate schedule on the Vance security forces or Visitor Control Center page before a late-night arrival.
  • The Visitor Control Center sits at the main gate; the phone number listed by Military.com is (580) 213-5528. Visitors without a DoD ID need a REAL ID-compliant license or passport and a sponsor, and the VCC closes for lunch from 1200 to 1230 and at noon on the last Friday of each month, so plan pass pickup around that.
  • Traffic is light by any big-base standard — the biggest slowdowns are the morning gate line before a 0600 brief and harvest-season grain trucks on US-81. During severe weather the base can close on short notice; watch the 71 FTW Facebook page and the Enid emergency alerts.

TDY lodging

Pets
Pet-friendly units
  • The Cherokee Lodge (Air Force Inns) is at 426 Goad St., Bldg. 714, Enid, OK 73705, phone (580) 213-7358 (DSN 448-7358).
  • Advance reservations are accepted for PCS orders and stays run up to 30 days with approval; pets are not allowed in the lodge and must be kenneled off base.
  • Next door, the FSS Rec Lodge (426 Goad St., Bldg. 790, same phone, office hours Mon–Fri 0800–1700) has five 2- and 3-bedroom suites with full kitchens and washer/dryers at $85 a night plus $10 per pet per night — that's the pet-friendly option.
  • When the lodge is full you'll be issued a non-availability number for commercial lodging.

Off-base per diem

  • Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
  • No current rate is quoted here.
  • Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
  • A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • On-base family housing is privatized under Hunt Military Communities (Vance Family Housing): 200-plus three- and four-bedroom single-family homes in three neighborhoods, office at 4405 Lehr St., Enid, OK 73703, phone (580) 441-7058, pet friendly with breed and size limits.
  • The base Housing Referral Office for off-base help is (580) 213-7438; unaccompanied housing is (580) 213-7212 for enlisted and (580) 213-5410/5420 for officers.
  • Enid rents are modest by Air Force standards — a three-bedroom house typically lands under an O-3's BAH — and buying is realistic on a two-year IP tour, though the 2026 tornado tightened the rental supply on the south side; confirm current rents on the base housing listings.

BAH 2026 · MHA OK236

  • 2026 BAH for Vance AFB/Enid (MHA OK236) per published 2026 tables: E-5 approximately $1,200 with dependents and $1,065 without; O-3 approximately $1,818 with dependents and $1,443 without.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
NeighborhoodCommute

South Enid / Southgate

Closest to the gate along South Van Buren and Southgate Road — 1970s to 2000s ranches, quick access to the base and Waukomis, and where many IPs buy; part of this side of town was in the April 2026 tornado path, so check any listing's condition.

Commute: ~5–10 min

West Enid / Garland Road

The newest subdivisions and most of the chain shopping and restaurants around Oakwood Mall and West Garriott; the default rental zone for student pilots and families who want new construction and Enid's newer schools.

Commute: ~12–15 min

Downtown / Waverly and Kenwood historic districts

Tree-lined streets of 1910s to 1930s homes north of the square, walkable to Stride Bank Center, breweries, and the Tri-State festival; charming and cheap, but older houses mean older storm shelters and insulation.

Commute: ~14 min

North Enid / Chisholm

Rural-edge acreage and newer homes zoned to the small, well-regarded Chisholm Public Schools district; the longest commute in town but still under 20 minutes.

Commute: ~18–20 min

Waukomis

A town of about 1,200 straight south on US-81 with its own K-12 district, big lots, and low prices; popular with families who want quiet and a five-minute gate run against traffic.

Commute: ~10 min

Schools & childcare

  • Eisenhower Elementary is the only school on Vance AFB and is run by Enid Public Schools; on-base housing is zoned to Enid Public Schools.
  • Enid Public Schools (Enid High School, two middle schools) serves most of the city, with Chisholm Public Schools to the north, Pioneer-Pleasant Vale and Waukomis to the south, and Cimarron nearby; Oklahoma runs a Purple Star designation for military-friendly campuses, so ask the liaison which Enid schools currently hold it.
  • The Vance AFB School Liaison Officer is (580) 213-6285 — call before you pick a rental if a specific school matters.
  • The 71 FSS Child Development Center, School Age Center, and Youth-Teen Center are on base; request care through MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders, because the CDC waitlist runs months out during class-start surges.
06

Healthcare

  • The 71st Medical Group is an outpatient clinic on base — primary care, flight medicine, pharmacy, dental, and a few specialties — with no emergency room and no inpatient beds; confirm the appointment line on the 71st Medical Group page before you arrive.
  • Emergencies go to St. Mary's Regional Medical Center (245 beds) or INTEGRIS Health Enid (207 beds), both in Enid within about 15 minutes of the gate; both have 24/7 emergency departments.
  • Oklahoma is in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance since January 2025 — update DEERS and, if you're enrolled in Prime elsewhere, sort out a referral or TRICARE Select status before a long TDY.

Insider tips

  1. 01Tornado season is real here — an EF4 crossed the base's southern perimeter on April 23, 2026. Know where the nearest shelter is at your lodging, keep weather alerts on from March through June, and never park under a tree during hail warnings.
  2. 02Call the Cherokee Lodge at (580) 213-7358 the day your orders drop; class-start weeks and graduations fill it, and the non-availability number is what unlocks the $110 commercial rate.
  3. 03If you're bringing a dog, the FSS Rec Lodge suites ($85 plus $10 per pet) are the only on-base pet option — the main lodge is no-pets, and most Enid hotels charge fees.
  4. 04Rent a car at OKC; there is no shuttle or transit between Oklahoma City and Enid, and the hour-and-a-half drive is your only option.
  5. 05The VCC closes for lunch 1200–1230 and at noon on the last Friday of the month — time your visitor pass pickup accordingly.
  6. 06Summer heat regularly passes 100°F and the wind never stops; pack sunglasses, a wide-brim hat for the flightline, and a wind-proof layer for the walk from the parking lot in January.
  7. 07Enid is a small town — most restaurants close early and the hotel bar scene is basically nonexistent, so a crashpad kitchen earns its keep on a 6-month UPT tour.
  8. 08Families PCSing: put your name on the Hunt Military Communities list at (580) 441-7058 as soon as orders are in hand, and call the School Liaison at (580) 213-6285 before signing a lease if a specific school matters.

FAQ

Can I get reimbursed for a crashpad at Vance AFB?
Yes, if a room is available on base you should take it; if the Cherokee Lodge (580-213-7358) is full you receive a non-availability number and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 Enid standard rate of $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE. Our crashpads are priced inside that rate with itemized receipts that DTS accepts.
Which gate should I use and when is it open?
Use the main gate off US-81 (South Van Buren) at Fields Street on the south side of Enid. Vance is small and gate schedules change with the flying mission, so confirm current hours on the base Visitor Control Center page or by calling (580) 213-5528 before a late-night arrival.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The 71st Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no ER. For emergencies go to St. Mary's Regional Medical Center or INTEGRIS Health Enid, both in town about 15 minutes away with 24/7 emergency departments.
Where do families live near Vance?
On base in Hunt Military Communities' 200-plus homes, or off base in west Enid near Garland Road and Oakwood Mall, downtown's historic districts, north Enid in the Chisholm district, or Waukomis just south on US-81. Nowhere in Enid is more than about 20 minutes from the gate.
