Enid, Oklahoma is a small town with a big flying mission, and that combination decides how much of your money you keep. Vance AFB lodging comes down to three options — a room at the Cherokee Lodge, a hotel or furnished rental in town, or a house you sign a real lease on — and the right answer depends entirely on whether you're on TDY (temporary duty) orders, PCS (permanent change of station) orders, or stuck in the gap between the two. This guide walks the numbers for each, and links to the furnished crashpads near Vance when that's the cheaper path.
Vance is home to the 71st Flying Training Wing, running Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training for Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and allied students. About 200 aircraft sit on the ramp — T-6A Texan II, T-38C Talon, and T-1A Jayhawk. That mission generates a steady flow of students waiting on class start dates, instructors in-processing, AETC staff, stan/eval visitors, and contract maintenance on rotation. All of them need a bed, and Enid has a finite number of them.
What does Vance AFB lodging actually mean for you?
Start with your orders. The dollars follow the order type, not the base.
If you're TDY, you're reimbursed for lodging up to a nightly ceiling, plus a daily meals and incidental expenses allowance (M&IE). Enid falls under the standard CONUS locality for Oklahoma. For fiscal year 2026 the published rate is $110 per night lodging and $68 per day M&IE before adjustments, checked in September 2026. That ceiling is what you may be reimbursed up to — it is not a booking quote and not a guarantee. Always pull the current figure for your exact dates from the live Vance AFB per diem page, especially if your stay crosses 1 October, when rates reset.
If you're PCS — which most UPT students are — you're not on per diem for the year. You draw Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) and you pay rent out of pocket. The 2026 BAH tables for Enid (military housing area OK236) show roughly $1,200 with dependents and $1,065 without for an E-5, and roughly $1,818 with dependents and $1,443 without for an O-3. Confirm your own grade and ZIP with the BAH calculator before you sign anything.
If you're in the gap — reported to Enid, waiting on a class start date or a Hunt Military Communities home — you're often on short-term lodging with a temporary authorization, and that's where people bleed money. A hotel at the cap for six weeks with no kitchen is a bad trade when a furnished house at the same price exists. The UPT survival guide covers what that first year looks like month by month.
What rules decide the money at Vance?
Government quarters first
On a TDY to an installation with adequate on-base lodging, the Joint Travel Regulations (JTR) generally expect you to use it. At Vance that's the Cherokee Lodge (Air Force Inns), 426 Goad St., Bldg. 714, Enid, OK 73705 — (580) 213-7358, DSN 448-7358. Advance reservations are accepted for PCS orders, and stays run up to 30 days with approval.
Call the day your orders drop. Class-start weeks and graduation weeks fill the lodge, and Vance is small. If they're full, they issue a non-availability number (non-A) — the statement that government quarters weren't available. That number is what lets you lodge commercially and get reimbursed at the locality rate. Our walkthrough of how a non-A works and how to file it in DTS covers who issues it and the mistakes that get vouchers kicked back. DTS is the Defense Travel System, the tool you file your voucher in.
Receipts
Lodging receipts are required. They need to be itemized: nightly rate, dates, taxes and fees broken out, your name on the document. A Venmo screenshot or a handwritten note will get returned. If you're renting a room from a private host, ask up front whether they can produce a real itemized receipt. Every Base Crashpads stay comes with one built for DTS, because the founder files the same vouchers.
Orders change
This is Vance's specific problem. Weather cancels sorties. Sorties push syllabus lines. Syllabus lines push class dates. A student pilot in the UPT pipeline can slide weeks; an instructor coming through on a FAIP track can have report dates move with almost no notice. Any lodging you sign should let you extend or shorten with your orders. A 12-month lease with a two-month penalty is a bad fit for a training base.
Off-base lodging note
The Cherokee Lodge does not allow pets — they must be kenneled off base. Next door, the FSS Rec Lodge (Bldg. 790, same phone, office hours Mon–Fri 0800–1700) has five two- and three-bedroom suites at $85 plus $10 per pet. It's the only on-base pet-friendly option, and it's five suites, so it goes fast.
Where should you live in Enid, and what does the commute cost?
Enid is compact. Almost nothing in town is more than 20 minutes from the main gate off US-81 (South Van Buren) at Fields Street. That means the commute is rarely the deciding factor — school district, house age, and price usually matter more.
| Area | What it is | Drive to the gate |
|---|---|---|
| South Enid / Southgate | Closest to the gate along South Van Buren and Southgate Road; 1970s–2000s ranches | ~5–10 min |
| West Enid / Garland Road | Newest subdivisions, most chain shopping and restaurants near Oakwood Mall | ~12–15 min |
| Downtown / Waverly & Kenwood | 1910s–1930s homes north of the square, walkable to the event center and downtown | ~14 min |
| North Enid / Chisholm | Rural-edge acreage and newer homes, small well-regarded Chisholm schools | ~18–20 min |
| Waukomis | Town of ~1,200 straight south on US-81, own K-12 district, big lots | ~10 min |
For PCS families, on-base housing is privatized under Hunt Military Communities — 200-plus three- and four-bedroom single-family homes across three neighborhoods, office at 4405 Lehr St., (580) 441-7058, pet friendly with breed and size limits. Waitlists move with the training calendar, so ask for a realistic date, not just a spot on the list. The base Housing Referral Office can help with off-base options. The full Vance AFB guide goes deeper on each neighborhood.
Running the two numbers
If you're TDY and considering on-base quarters, price them out across your actual check-in and check-out dates with the on-base lodging cost calculator. Then price the commercial side against the ceiling using the TDY per diem calculator. The gap between those two totals over a 60- or 90-day stay is usually larger than people expect, and it decides whether you keep anything.
A word on the weather
July averages a 95°F high with humidity that pushes past 100. January averages 47°F highs and 25°F lows with wind chills below zero. Spring brings severe thunderstorms and tornadoes — an EF4 crossed the base's southern perimeter on 23 April 2026. Wherever you stay, find the nearest shelter on day one, keep weather alerts on from March through June, and don't park under a tree in hail season. Hail damage on a rental car is a paperwork problem you don't need mid-syllabus.
What's the step-by-step plan?
- Read your orders for the lodging line. Confirm whether government quarters are directed, whether your lodging is limited to the locality ceiling, and what your authorized dates are. Everything else follows from that page.
- Call the Cherokee Lodge at (580) 213-7358 the same day. Not next week. Ask about your dates and ask specifically what happens if your report date slides.
- Get the non-A number in writing if they're full. Email it to yourself. You'll need it at voucher time, and "they told me over the phone" is not a document.
- Pull the rate for your exact dates. Don't assume last year's number. If your stay crosses 1 October, you may have two different rates on one voucher.
- Shop lodging at or under the ceiling, with a kitchen. A kitchen is the difference between eating your M&IE and keeping some of it. Over a 90-day course, that's real money — the same math we walked through for long tech-school stays at Keesler.
- Confirm the receipt format before you pay. Itemized, your name, nightly rate, taxes broken out.
- Confirm gate hours before your first day. Vance is small and gate schedules change with the flying mission. Check the Visitor Control Center or call (580) 213-5528.
- Know where the ER is. The 71st Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room. St. Mary's Regional Medical Center and INTEGRIS Health Enid are both about 15 minutes away with 24/7 emergency departments.
- File within your unit's window. Late vouchers create pay problems that take longer to fix than they took to cause.
One more practical note: the nearest major airport is Will Rogers World in Oklahoma City, about 90 minutes south. Plan travel days accordingly, and remember that Enid runs on Central time.
How does a crashpad fit at Vance AFB?
A crashpad is a furnished room or house near a base, rented by the month or by the orders, priced against the government lodging rate. If the term is new to you, start with what a military crashpad is.
Here's the honest comparison for Enid. The Cherokee Lodge is the cheapest option if you can get in, and you should take it when it's available — that's both the rule and the smart play. But it caps at 30 days with approval, it's no-pets, and it fills during class-start and graduation weeks. Hotels in Enid will price at or near the ceiling and hand you a room, a mini-fridge, and a breakfast bar. Same voucher, very different quality of life across a three-month stay. A furnished house gives you a kitchen, laundry, a driveway, and space to study — for the same reimbursable dollars. We laid the three side by side in our crashpad vs. Air Force Inns vs. Airbnb comparison.
Base Crashpads works by request, not by browsing. You post your base and dates, vetted local hosts bid, we pick the top three, and you choose. Stays are priced inside the government lodging rate, receipts come DTS-ready, and lease terms flex when your class date moves — which at a pilot training base, it will. We're still expanding at Vance, so the fastest way to find out what's available is to send your class start or TDY dates.
If you're headed to Enid, tell us your dates and we'll tell you what's actually open. Find a crashpad near your base — and if nothing fits, we'll say so rather than sell you something that doesn't.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get reimbursed for a crashpad at Vance AFB?
Yes, with the right paperwork. If a room is available at the Cherokee Lodge you should take it. If the lodge is full, call (580) 213-7358 and get a non-availability number, then lodge commercially and be reimbursed up to the published Enid rate — $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE for FY2026. Our crashpads are priced inside that ceiling and come with itemized, DTS-ready receipts. Always confirm your own authorization, since your orders control what you can claim.
How long can I stay at the Cherokee Lodge?
Stays run up to 30 days with approval, and advance reservations are accepted for PCS orders. That works for in-processing or a short TDY, but it does not cover a full UPT class. Pets are not allowed in the main lodge and must be kenneled off base; the FSS Rec Lodge next door (Bldg. 790, same phone number) has five two- and three-bedroom suites at $85 plus $10 per pet and is the only on-base pet option.
Which gate should I use, and what are the hours?
Use the main gate off US-81 (South Van Buren) at Fields Street on the south side of Enid. Vance is a small installation and gate schedules shift with the flying mission, so confirm current hours with the Visitor Control Center or by calling (580) 213-5528 before your first duty day.
Is there a hospital on base at Vance?
No. The 71st Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room. For emergencies, go to St. Mary's Regional Medical Center or INTEGRIS Health Enid — both are in town, roughly 15 minutes away, with 24/7 emergency departments.
Does BAH cover rent in Enid?
For most grades, Enid rents sit inside the 2026 BAH figures for OK236 — approximately $1,200 with dependents and $1,065 without for an E-5, and approximately $1,818 with dependents and $1,443 without for an O-3. Verify your grade, ZIP and dependent status on the official DTMO BAH calculator before you commit to a lease, since published tables change annually.
What should I know about tornado season before I sign a lease?
Severe weather is a normal part of spring on the plains, and an EF4 crossed the base's southern perimeter on 23 April 2026. Ask any landlord or host where the nearest storm shelter or interior safe room is before you sign. Keep weather alerts turned on from March through June, and avoid parking under trees when hail is in the forecast.
