Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT)

A year at Columbus, Laughlin, Vance, or Sheppard learning to fly the T-6 and then your track aircraft — on a schedule that starts before dawn and doesn't care where you sleep.

How lodging works on this pipeline

Most UPT students PCS in, so BAH funds housing rather than per diem. A shared house near the gate with two or three classmates is the setup most classes settle on: it splits BAH, gives everyone a real kitchen for 0330 meal prep, and keeps chair-flying partners under one roof.

The four UPT bases are small towns where the base is the economy and the rental market knows the class schedule. Book before you arrive — the tightest months are the class-start months.

Questions

UPT FAQ

Do UPT students get per diem?
Usually not — most students PCS to their UPT base and draw BAH. Students on TDY orders (FAIPs returning, some Guard/Reserve and international programs) are on per diem instead.
Where do UPT students live?
Close to the gate, usually in a shared house with classmates. Each of our UPT base guides lists the neighborhoods that make the 0500 show time survivable.
