Overview
Laughlin is the Air Force's largest pilot-training base. The 47th Flying Training Wing runs Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training in the T-6A Texan II and T-38C Talon (the T-1A Jayhawk flew its last Laughlin sortie in December 2024), with roughly 15 classes of 20–25 students a year, an average daily student load in the mid-400s, and about 400 new pilots winged annually. The wing flies on the order of 100,000 hours and 64,000 sorties a year, and the flightline is one of the busiest in the country on any given weekday. Students, instructor pilots, Reserve associates from the 96th FTS, contract maintainers and AETC staff all cycle through.
The place is Del Rio, a border city of about 35,000 on the Rio Grande, 150 miles west of San Antonio and directly across from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. It's hot semi-arid country — July highs near 97°F, roughly 18–20 inches of rain a year, and mild winters with January lows around 42°F. What matters to a TDY traveler: it's a small town with a thin hotel market, everything is a short drive, Lake Amistad is the recreation, and the shift-change traffic on US-90 is the only rush hour you'll meet.
Weather
Del Rio averages a 97°F high in July and about 98°F in August, with 100°F days routine from June through September; annual rainfall is only 18–20 inches, most of it in spring and fall storms. Winters are short and mild — January highs in the 60s, lows around 42°F — with a rare hard freeze.
Best months
October through April
Tough months
June through September — triple-digit heat, intense sun and flash-flooding thunderstorms; May–October is also the Rio Grande flood-season window
Getting there
- Del Rio International (DRT) is on the west side of town, about 20 minutes from the West Gate, served by American Eagle regional jets from DFW (roughly 90 minutes). Rental cars are on site but the fleet is small — reserve before you fly. Most people drive: San Antonio (SAT) is about 150 miles east on US-90, call it 2.5–3 hours, and the road is two-lane for stretches, so avoid it at night when deer are out.
- The West Gate on State Loop 79 is the main gate and the North Gate sits directly off US-90; the base housing site lists both as 24/7, but access at the North Gate can be restricted to DoD ID holders, so confirm current gate status on laughlin.af.mil before arrival.
- The Visitor Control Center is Building 7002, in front of the main gate, open Monday–Friday 7 a.m.–4 p.m. and closed weekends; call 830-298-5349 to confirm. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license, registration and proof of insurance; sponsors handle passes for guests without a DoD ID, and arriving after hours without one means waiting for the VCC to open.
- Traffic is minimal except at the morning and afternoon shift changes on US-90 and Loop 79, and Border Patrol checkpoints are a fact of life on every highway out of Del Rio — US-90 east toward Uvalde and US-277 north toward Sonora. Keep your ID handy and budget a few minutes.

Laughlin AFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Family housing is privatized under Hunt Military Communities as Laughlin Family Housing: about 450 two-, three- and four-bedroom homes across five gated on-base neighborhoods, with a community center, fitness room, dog park and playgrounds; the leasing office is at 8550 Edwards Street, 830-468-5854.
- The government Military Housing Office is 830-298-5732.
- Off base, Del Rio is one of the cheapest rental markets in Texas — mid-2025 averages ran about $845 for a one-bedroom apartment, $1,035 for two bedrooms and $1,400 for a three-bedroom house, and median sale prices in the Buena Vista/Ceniza Hills area hovered around $236,000 in early 2025.
- Buying makes sense for instructors on a three-year tour; students on a one-year class usually rent or take the on-base option.
BAH 2026 · MHA TX278
| Grade | With dependents | Without dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $1,470 | $1,209 |
| O-3 | $2,121 | $1,686 |
- Laughlin is MHA TX278 (Laughlin AFB/Del Rio), one of the lowest BAH localities in Texas.
- Published 2026 tables show approximately $1,470 with dependents / $1,209 without for an E-5, and $2,121 with / $1,686 without for an O-3, down about 1.4% from 2025 — confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
On base — Laughlin Family Housing
Hunt's 450 homes put you minutes from the flightline and the CDC, with no deposit and baseline utilities; students and young instructor families take this for the zero commute and instant community.
Ceniza Hills / Buena Vista
Northwest Del Rio's newer subdivisions off Veterans Boulevard and US-90 West, quiet cul-de-sacs, the Purple Star Buena Vista and Ceniza Hills elementaries, and most of the base's off-base officer families.
North Del Rio / Bedell–Veterans corridor
Older ranch homes and apartments near the hospital, H-E-B and the shopping strip, the practical choice for a one-year student who wants a short drive and everything within two miles.
Lake Amistad area (US-90 West / US-277 North)
Lake-view houses and ranchettes 10–20 miles out toward the dam and the marinas, popular with anglers and families with boats; longer drive, no city services, big skies.
Brackettville / Fort Clark Springs
A historic cavalry post turned gated community 30 miles east on US-90 with a spring-fed pool, golf and Brackett ISD's small schools; a handful of instructor families choose it for the quiet.
Schools & childcare
- No on-base school. Children in Laughlin Family Housing attend San Felipe Del Rio CISD, and the district buses to the base — confirm routes with the School Liaison before you sign a lease.
- San Felipe Del Rio CISD is the main district (roughly 10,000 students, one high school) and a Texas Purple Star district; Buena Vista Elementary, Ceniza Hills Elementary, Roberto 'Bobby' Barrera STEM Magnet Elementary, Del Rio Middle School and Del Rio Freshman all hold the Purple Star designation. Brackett ISD and Comstock ISD serve the outlying communities, and Sacred Heart Catholic, St. James Episcopal and Bible Way Christian are the private options.
- School Liaison: Building 362 on Mitchell Boulevard, 830-298-4788 or 830-703-0795, 47fss.fsy.slo@us.af.mil. Call before you arrive for enrollment paperwork and the current bus schedule.
- The Laughlin Child Development Center takes ages six weeks through five years, and the youth center covers school-age care. Space is tight at UPT class starts — request care on MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders.
Healthcare
- 47th Medical Group, 590 Mitchell Boulevard (Building 375), is an outpatient clinic: family health, flight medicine, dental, pharmacy, optometry and mental health. No emergency room and no inpatient beds — get the appointment-line number and hours from laughlin.tricare.mil, and use the Nurse Advice Line (1-800-TRICARE) after hours.
- Emergencies go to Val Verde Regional Medical Center, 801 N. Bedell Avenue in Del Rio — a 93-bed hospital with a 16-bed, 24/7 Level IV trauma ER about 10 miles from the base (830-775-8566). Anything beyond that gets flown or driven to San Antonio, so know your Prime referral rules.
- Texas moved to the TRICARE West Region on January 1, 2025; the contractor is TriWest Healthcare Alliance (tricare.triwest.com). Prime enrollees are assigned to the 47th MDG; families on Select use civilian providers in Del Rio.

Off duty

Lake Amistad
Amistad National Recreation Area is a 65,000-acre reservoir on the Rio Grande starting about 12 miles northwest of Del Rio on US-90 — crystal-clear water, world-class largemouth bass, and Diablo East and Rough Canyon boat ramps. Outdoor Rec rents boats and the base's Southwinds Marina has slips and campsites.

Seminole Canyon State Park
Forty-five minutes west on US-90 near Comstock, the Fate Bell Shelter holds 4,000-year-old pictographs you can only see on a guided hike. Go in the cool months and pair it with the Pecos River high bridge overlook a few miles farther.

Devils River
One of the cleanest rivers in Texas, an hour north on US-277 at Devils River State Natural Area. Paddling permits are limited and the road in is rough, but the swimming holes and Class III rapids are the reward for the effort.

San Felipe Springs and Creek
Del Rio's oasis: a spring-fed creek that stays cool in August, with the Horseshoe Park swimming hole, shaded trails and the Whitehead Memorial Museum's 2.5 acres of border history — Judge Roy Bean is buried on the grounds.

Val Verde Winery
Founded in 1883 by Italian immigrant Frank Qualia and still run by the family, it's the oldest operating winery in Texas. The tasting room on Qualia Drive is a five-minute detour from downtown and the tawny port is the local souvenir.
Official site ↗Ciudad Acuña
The international bridge is on the south side of Del Rio; Acuña's Hidalgo Street has restaurants, dentists and the Corona Club made famous in 'Desperado.' Check your unit's current Mexico travel policy first — leave-and-pass restrictions change.
Official site ↗San Antonio weekend
Two and a half hours east on US-90 through Brackettville and Uvalde puts you at the River Walk, Sea World, Fiesta Texas and JBSA's commissaries and BX; Fort Clark Springs in Brackettville makes a good stop for its spring-fed pool.
Wikipedia ↗Insider tips
- 01The heat is the hazard — 100°F days run June through September and the sun is brutal at 1,000 feet elevation. Pack a sunshade for the car, hydrate like a pilot, and schedule outdoor PT before 8 a.m.
- 02Flash floods are real on the Rio Grande and San Felipe Creek: US-90 and Loop 79 low-water crossings close in heavy rain, and Del Rio flooded badly in 1998. Never drive through water over the road.
- 03Book Laughlin Manor the day your orders drop — the 60-day window opens before most people think about it, and class starts fill the Manor and Del Rio's hotels at the same time.
- 04Expect a Border Patrol checkpoint on every highway leaving town; a valid ID and a calm answer keep the stop under a minute. Don't take a rental across the bridge unless the contract allows it.
- 05Rental cars at DRT sell out during class starts and holidays. Reserve early or fly into San Antonio and drive; US-90 is two-lane with heavy deer traffic after dark.
- 06Students in on-base housing get the shortest commute on any UPT base; if you want off base, the Buena Vista/Ceniza Hills subdivisions rent fast at each class start, so start looking 60 days out.
- 07The CDC waitlist runs longest in late summer and January. Request care on MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders and ask the School Liaison about the base bus routes.
- 08Grocery runs: the base commissary has short Monday hours and H-E-B on Veterans Boulevard is the town's only full grocery store, so plan a weekly run and keep the kitchen stocked — dining options after 8 p.m. are thin.
