Overview
Goodfellow is AETC's intelligence and fire schoolhouse. The 17th Training Wing runs five training squadrons under the 17th Training Group and the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy, graduating close to 14,000 students a year in ISR and fire protection, with an average daily student load around 3,200. It is a genuinely joint base: the Texas Comptroller counts roughly 3,460 Air Force, 960 Army, 740 Marine, 240 Navy and 100 Space Force members assigned, and the Army's 344th Military Intelligence Battalion alone trains more than 1,500 soldiers annually. There is no flying mission and no runway — the work happens in classrooms, SCIFs and on the fire academy's burn pads.
San Angelo is a city of about 100,000 in the Concho Valley of West Texas, 225 miles west of Austin and a long way from anywhere else. The climate is semi-arid: January highs around 60°F with lows near freezing, July highs around 96°F, roughly 21 inches of rain a year and about 30 days a year over 100°F. For a TDY traveler that means a car is non-negotiable, summer PT happens early, and the town is more livable than its reputation — a real river walk, three lakes, a university and a decent food scene.
Weather
San Angelo averages a 96°F high in July with about 30 days a year topping 100°F, and a 60°F high in January with lows around 31°F. Annual rainfall is about 21 inches, much of it in spring and fall thunderstorms that can bring hail.
Best months
October through November and March through April
Tough months
June through August — triple-digit heat, intense sun and afternoon storms; hail season peaks in spring, so park under cover if you can
Getting there
- Fly into San Angelo Regional Airport (SJT, Mathis Field), which has American Eagle service to and from DFW only. Avis and Budget rent on site and Enterprise is off site; reserve ahead because inventory is thin. The airport is on the southwest side of town, about 20 minutes to the gate. If SJT fares are ugly, DFW is about 4 hours by car and San Antonio about 3.5 hours via US-87.
- Goodfellow has two gates. Historically the Jacobson Gate (South Gate, off South Chadbourne Street) was the 24/7 main gate and the North Gate ran weekday hours only. As of March 23, 2026 the base flipped that for a Visitor Control Center remodel: the North Gate is open 24 hours and the South Gate runs Monday through Friday 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed weekends and federal holidays. Confirm current hours on the base's Visitor Control Center page before you arrive.
- The permanent Visitor Control Center is at 361 Apache Trail, Building 3005, beside the South Gate (listed phone 325-654-4122). During the remodel a temporary VCC operates in the parking lot next to the North Gate and handles all passes and registration. Bring a REAL ID or passport, plus registration and insurance if you are driving a rental; rideshare and food-delivery drivers must use the North Gate while the remodel is under way.
- Traffic is light by military-town standards. The only real crunch is the 0530 to 0700 student push at whichever gate is open, and Loop 306 at lunch. If you are staying on the southwest side, Knickerbocker Road to Loop 306 to South Chadbourne is the standard route.

- Students in course are usually housed in dorms or the inn; TDY staff should book as soon as orders are cut.
- If the inn is full, ask for a non-availability number before you lodge off base.
Off-base per diem

The crashpad option
We're expanding at Goodfellow AFB. If you have orders to San Angelo, send us your dates and we'll let you know what we have opening up — every Base Crashpads property is furnished, priced inside the $110 rate and comes with DTS-ready receipts.
Goodfellow AFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- On-base family housing is privatized under Hunt Military Communities as Goodfellow Family Housing, roughly 250 homes in the Rio Concho, Concho Pearl and Eagle Pass neighborhoods (office at 2025 Longhorn Drive, 325-651-8369).
- The government Military Housing Office is listed at 325-654-3498 for referral and the waitlist.
- Off base, San Angelo is one of the cheaper markets in the Air Force: a typical 1,500-square-foot home sells below the national average, and MyBaseGuide puts entry-level homes in town from about $175,000 and in Grape Creek from about $125,000 (2025).
- Rents for a three-bedroom generally sit well inside with-dependents BAH; buying makes sense for a four-year permanent-party tour.
BAH 2026 · MHA TX284
- 2026 BAH for MHA TX284 (Goodfellow AFB) per published 2026 tables: E-5 approximately $1,578 with dependents and $1,230 without; O-3 approximately $2,193 with dependents and $1,740 without — up about 4.4 percent from 2025.
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
College Hills / Sunset
Established mid-century neighborhoods around Angelo State University with mature trees, the Sunset Mall and most of the chain restaurants; the best mix of rentals and starter homes in San Angelo ISD zones.
Southland / Bentwood
The southwest side's newer builds and the Bentwood Country Club area — bigger lots, higher prices by local standards, and where most officers and senior NCOs with families end up.
Lake Nasworthy
Lakefront and near-lake homes on the south edge of town with boat ramps, the Nature Center and sunset views; pricier per square foot and a longer drive, but the closest thing to a resort life in West Texas.
Downtown / Santa Rita
Historic homes near the Concho River Walk, Fort Concho and the Chadbourne Street bars and coffee shops; older housing stock, short commute and the only truly walkable part of San Angelo.
Wall and Grape Creek
Small towns outside the city limits — Wall east of the base with its own well-regarded rural ISD, Grape Creek to the northwest with the cheapest homes in the area — both quiet, both a short highway drive.
Schools & childcare
- No on-base schools. Children in Goodfellow Family Housing attend San Angelo ISD, which serves most of the city; outlying families use Wall ISD (east), Grape Creek ISD (northwest) or Christoval ISD (south).
- San Angelo ISD runs Central High School and Lake View High School plus a full set of magnet and career-tech programs; Wall ISD is the small rural district many base families drive for. Texas participates in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children and its Purple Star campus program — ask the School Liaison which campuses currently hold the designation.
- The Goodfellow School Liaison Program Manager is listed at 325-654-3893 (confirm on the 17th FSS or Military OneSource page); call before you PCS for enrollment help and transfer of credits.
- The base Child Development Center, School Age Program and Youth Center are all run by the 17th FSS. Put your request into MilitaryChildCare.com the day you have orders — CDC waits at a training base with this many young families can run months.
Healthcare
- The 17th Medical Group runs an outpatient clinic only (two squadrons providing primary care, dental, mental health and student clinic services). There is no emergency room on base; find the appointment line on goodfellow.tricare.mil or the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal.
- Emergencies go to Shannon Medical Center downtown, the region's Level II trauma center and the largest civilian employer in San Angelo after the base; it is about 10 minutes from the gate.
- Texas is in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance since January 2025. Confirm your region by ZIP on tricare.mil and update your PCM if you are here on a long TDY.
On base
- Commissary
Full commissary on base — small but adequate for a month-long TDY; H-E-B and Walmart in town cover the gaps.
- Exchange
Main BX open Mon-Sat 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sun 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. per MyBaseGuide, with Express and food court.
- Fitness
Base fitness center open to all ID card holders; outdoor pools open seasonally to DoD card holders (aquatics 325-654-5643).
- Dining
Dining facility for students and permanent party, plus X-Press-O's Cafe, the Thede Bowling Grill and snack shacks around the training area.
- MWR
Thede Bowling Center, Powell Event Center, Arts & Crafts Center, Auto Hobby Shop, Outdoor Recreation with equipment rental and a Lake Nasworthy campground, and an ITT office for Fiesta Texas and San Antonio trips.
- Signature events
FSS Oktoberfest each fall, 'Monsters of Mathis' at the airport, and the annual Goodfellow open house tied to the base's 1940 founding.
Off duty

Concho River Walk
Four miles of paved path along the Concho through downtown, lit at night, with the painted sheep statues, fountains and the International Waterlily Collection at Civic League Park. It's the default evening run for anyone at Goodfellow and about 10 minutes from the gate.
Fort Concho National Historic Landmark
An 1867 frontier cavalry post with more than 20 original limestone buildings, the best-preserved fort of its kind in Texas, right off South Oakes Street downtown. Living-history weekends and Christmas at Old Fort Concho in December are worth the $5 or so admission.
Official site ↗Lake Nasworthy and Twin Buttes
Nasworthy is the in-town lake for boating, fishing and the Nature Center; Twin Buttes Reservoir just west is bigger and quieter. Outdoor Rec rents kayaks and paddleboards and runs the base campground on the lake, about 20 minutes from Goodfellow.

San Angelo State Park
More than 7,000 acres on O.C. Fisher Reservoir on the northwest edge of town with 50-plus miles of trails, the official Texas longhorn herd and bison. Mountain bikers and trail runners live here in the cooler months; sunrise in summer, not midday.

Chicken Farm Art Center and the downtown scene
A working artists' colony on Martin Luther King Drive with studios, a courtyard and First Saturday open studios. Downtown Chadbourne and Concho Avenue have craft beer, coffee and the old Miss Hattie's bordello museum, and Paintbrush Alley is the mural stop.
Rodeo and stock show season
The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo each February is one of the biggest in Texas, and the Producers Livestock Auction is among the largest sheep and cattle auctions in the country if you want to see the real West Texas economy.
Wikipedia ↗Weekend road trips
Fredericksburg and the Hill Country wineries are about 2.5 hours southeast, San Antonio is 3.5 hours, and Big Bend is a long but doable 5-hour drive for a four-day weekend. Fort Chadbourne and the Caverns of Sonora are closer half-day trips.
Insider tips
- 01Gate hours changed on March 23, 2026 for the VCC remodel — the North Gate is 24/7 and the South (Jacobson) Gate is weekday daytime only. Check the base's Visitor Control Center page the week you travel, because the base will flip back when construction ends.
- 02Heat is the hazard. Thirty days a year over 100°F, high UV and hot wind mean fire academy and PT are early; bring electrolytes, a sun hoodie and a car windshield shade, and never leave gear or pets in a vehicle.
- 03Spring hail is real in the Concho Valley. If your crashpad or rental has covered parking, use it; if not, know where the nearest garage is when the sky turns green.
- 04Book the Angelo Inn the day you have orders. Class starts stack students into the inn and the town's hotel inventory is thin, so get your non-availability number early and line up off-base lodging inside the $110 rate.
- 05San Angelo is 90 miles from Abilene and 225 from Austin, with a one-airline airport. Rent the car before you fly, and if you're driving in on US-87 or US-67 watch for deer at dusk — hitting one is the most common rental-car claim out here.
- 06The base has no runway, so there's no flightline noise and no aircrew rhythm — but there are Army, Navy and Marine formations at 0600, so expect gate traffic then rather than at 0730.
- 07PCSing with kids? Put your name into MilitaryChildCare.com immediately and call the School Liaison at 325-654-3893 about Wall ISD versus San Angelo ISD before you sign a lease — the district line matters more than the neighborhood here.
- 08Water restrictions are a way of life in West Texas. Check the City of San Angelo's current drought stage for lawn and car-wash rules before you get a ticket in a rental house.
