Overview
JBSA-Lackland is where the enlisted Air Force begins. The 37th Training Wing is the largest training wing in the service, and its 737th Training Group takes more than 36,000 civilians a year through 7.5 weeks of Basic Military Training, graduating a new class every Wednesday and Thursday. The same wing runs the Security Forces Academy (roughly 1,300 students on the ground at any time), the Defense Language Institute English Language Center, the Inter-American Air Forces Academy and a long list of tech-training courses, for a total north of 79,000 students a year. Around them sit the 59th Medical Wing at Wilford Hall, the DoD's largest outpatient surgical center, Sixteenth Air Force (Air Forces Cyber) on Security Hill, and the Texas Air National Guard's 149th Fighter Wing flying F-16s from Kelly Field. Joint Base San Antonio as a whole counts roughly 24,000 active duty, 10,000 civilians and another 11,000 contractors and family members, so you are walking into one of the busiest installations in the Department.
The base is on San Antonio's southwest side, wedged between US-90, Loop 410 and Military Drive, about 12 miles from the River Walk. San Antonio is hot: July averages a 96-degree high, the city tops 100 on roughly 18-22 days a year, and the humidity is real. Winters are mild (January highs in the low 60s), and May is the wettest month with flash-flood potential. For a TDY traveler that means a car with working A/C, an early-morning PT habit, and a room with a kitchen so you are not living on Military Drive fast food for eight weeks.
Weather
Humid subtropical: July highs average 96 F and the city hits 100 F on about 18-22 days a year, while January runs 63/41. Roughly 33 inches of rain falls annually, peaking in May (4.7 inches) with real flash-flood risk on low-water crossings.
Best months
October through April
Tough months
June through September for heat (BMT graduation parades start at 0900 for a reason); May and early June for flash flooding
Getting there
- Fly into San Antonio International (SAT) on the north side. It is about 19 miles and 30 minutes to Lackland: I-410 West around the city, then US-90 West or Loop 410 south to Military Drive. Rent a car — Lackland sprawls across the main base, Security Hill, the Kelly Field Annex and the Medina Annex, and there is no useful transit option.
- Three gates run 24/7: Luke Gateway East (the main gate on Military Drive), the Valley Hi 'Airman's' Gate (I-410 exit 4) and the Medina Gate for the Lackland Training Annex. Luke Gateway West and Selfridge West are weekday-only with split inbound/outbound windows; Selfridge East and Security Hill are roughly 0600-1800 Mon-Fri; Growden runs 0500-1800 weekdays and 0500-1700 weekends. Hours shift with construction, so confirm at jbsa.mil/Gate-Hours.
- Visitors without a DoD ID go to the East Luke Visitor Center at 2602 Luke Blvd, just outside the Luke East main gate; you need a REAL ID-compliant photo ID and a sponsor. Militaryonesource lists 210-671-2018 (Base Defense Operations Center) for access questions; the visitor center itself is listed at 210-671-6174. Confirm hours on the JBSA-Lackland Visitor Info page before you show up.
- Wednesday and Thursday mornings are BMT graduation days. The Reception Center opens at 0600, guest buses roll to the parade grounds 0730-0830, and Military Drive and the Luke East gate back up accordingly. If you are on TDY and do not need to be part of it, use the Valley Hi or Medina gates those mornings, or get in before 0700.

- It is a large operation with 24-hour front desk service typical of Air Force Inns; official-orders travelers get priority.
- Pet-friendly rooms are limited and the desk keeps a list of local kennels and pet-friendly hotels.
- PCS families are capped at 30 days in TLF with only 10 reimbursed.
- If they are full, get your non-availability statement from the Gateway Inn before you book anywhere else, and note they may try to place you at JBSA-Randolph or Fort Sam Houston across town before releasing you.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
Our closest Base Crashpads property is Oakwood, a 4-bed / 3-bath house in San Antonio on the northeast side near JBSA-Randolph, priced inside the $137 San Antonio rate with DTS-ready receipts. Honest note: from Oakwood to Lackland is a cross-town drive, roughly 30-40 minutes via Loop 410 or I-10 and US-90 off-peak and closer to 45-60 minutes at rush hour. It works well if you split time between Randolph and Lackland or want a quiet house with a kitchen and are fine with the drive; if your daily reporting is on Security Hill or at BMT, tell us your dates and we will let you know what we have opening up closer to the west side.
JBSA-Lackland crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Family housing at Lackland is privatized under Balfour Beatty Communities as Lackland Family Homes (office 210-674-9366, maintenance 210-674-9369, lacklandfamilyhomes.com).
- The JBSA Housing Management Office at 210-671-1840 handles referrals, lease counseling and tenant-landlord disputes for on- and off-base options.
- Off base, mid-2026 San Antonio rents run about $960-$1,100 for a one-bedroom and $1,200-$1,400 for a two-bedroom, with west-side suburbs like Leon Valley and Helotes typically $950-$1,150 for a one-bedroom; newer Alamo Ranch complexes start around $900.
- Single-family rentals near Alamo Ranch and Westover Hills that fit an E-6 or O-3 with-dependents BAH are plentiful, and San Antonio remains one of the more affordable big-city markets to buy in with a VA loan.
BAH 2026 · MHA TX285
- San Antonio is MHA TX285.
- Per published 2026 tables, an E-5 draws approximately $1,869 with dependents and $1,500 without; an O-3 draws approximately $2,127 with dependents and $2,007 without (down about 2.9 percent from 2025).
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
Alamo Ranch / Westover Hills
The default for Lackland families: newer master-planned subdivisions and apartments off TX-151 and Loop 1604, Northside ISD schools with several Purple Star campuses, SeaWorld and the H-E-B plus everywhere, and a straight shot down 151 to the Valley Hi gate.
Helotes / Far West Side
Hill Country edge with bigger lots, Government Canyon trails and Old Town Helotes honky-tonks; still Northside ISD, a bit more house for the money, and a longer run down Bandera Road or Loop 1604 to base.
Medical Center / Leon Valley
Central, older, and priced below the suburbs, with the South Texas Medical Center and USAA nearby; handy for 59th MDW spouses who work at the civilian hospitals, and Loop 410 south drops you at the base.
Southtown / Downtown
Historic King William bungalows, the River Walk and Pearl within a bike ride, and a livelier scene for single officers and geo-bachelors; US-90 west to the Luke East gate is quick outside rush hour.
On base (Lackland Family Homes)
Balfour Beatty homes inside the fence, zoned to Lackland ISD's two on-base Purple Star schools, no gate wait, and walking distance to the Gateway Club and Chaparral gym; expect a waitlist for larger units.
Schools & childcare
- Lackland is one of the few Air Force bases with its own school district. Lackland ISD runs two on-base campuses — Lackland Elementary (PK-5) and Virginia Allred Stacey Jr/Sr High School (6-12) — and both hold the Texas Education Agency's Purple Star designation. Enrollment is for families living in base housing.
- Off base, most Lackland families land in Northside ISD (Alamo Ranch, Westover Hills, Helotes, Medical Center), the largest district in the city, with military-experienced enrollment staff and Purple Star campuses including Adams Hill, Boldt, McAndrew and Scarborough elementaries. Southwest ISD covers the neighborhoods immediately around the base; San Antonio ISD covers Southtown and downtown.
- The JBSA-Lackland School Liaison can be reached at Lackland.slo@us.af.mil; contact them before you leave your current station for records, enrollment and the Interstate Compact.
- Childcare: three Child Development Centers serve Lackland (two on the main base, one at the Kelly Field Annex), plus Family Child Care homes coordinated by the FCC office in Bldg 8210, 2310 Kinnley Ave, 210-671-3376. Get on the MilitaryChildCare.com waitlist the day you have orders; infant spots take months.
Healthcare
- Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center (59th Medical Wing), 2200 Bergquist Dr, JBSA-Lackland 78236, is the DoD's largest outpatient surgical center: full primary care, specialty clinics and same-day surgery, but not an inpatient hospital. Appointment line 210-916-9900. Note the change in 2026: the 59th MDW converted the Wilford Hall Emergency Department to an Urgent Care Center effective 4 April 2026; confirm current urgent-care hours at wilfordhall.tricare.mil.
- For a true emergency, call 911 and go to the nearest civilian ER (Methodist Hospital Westover Hills and University Hospital in the Medical Center are the closest large ones on the west side). The DoD's inpatient hospital in San Antonio is Brooke Army Medical Center at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston on the northeast side, a Level I trauma center about 20-25 miles from Lackland.
- Texas moved to the TRICARE West Region on 1 January 2025, so the contractor is TriWest Healthcare Alliance, not Humana Military. Update your enrollment and payment info with TriWest before you PCS in, and check the TriWest provider directory for off-base pediatricians and specialists.
On base
- Commissary
- Lackland Commissary on the main base; the Fort Sam Houston and Randolph commissaries are cross-town backups.

- Gateway Club is the base's club and catering venue.
- MWR
- JBSA Outdoor Recreation and Information, Tickets & Travel sell discounted SeaWorld, Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Spurs tickets; the 502d FSS also runs pools, bowling and the Skylark community center.

- Trainees can sponsor up to six guests without DoD IDs; the Airman Heritage Museum on base is worth a stop while you wait.
Off duty

River Walk and the Alamo
About 12 miles east on US-90. The Alamo is free, the River Walk barges are cheap, and the newer Museum Reach stretch north to the Pearl is quieter than the tourist loop. Go on a weeknight evening; graduation weekends pack it with families.

SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas
SeaWorld is 8 miles up TX-151 in Westover Hills; Six Flags is about 20 miles north at I-10 and Loop 1604. ITT on base sells discounted tickets, and SeaWorld's Waves of Honor program has offered free admission to service members and dependents in past years — check the current offer.

The Pearl and Southtown
The Pearl brewery district has the best food in the city (Cured, Bakery Lorraine, the weekend farmers market) and Southtown's King William neighborhood has First Friday art walks. Both are 15-20 minutes from base and easy for a solo TDY dinner.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
Four Spanish missions (Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan, Espada) along a paved river trail about 10 miles southeast of base. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, free, and the Mission Reach trail is a great flat run or ride before the heat sets in.

Hill Country day trips
Fredericksburg (German main street, wineries, the National Museum of the Pacific War) is about 70 miles northwest; Bandera bills itself the cowboy capital and is 50 miles up TX-16; the Guadalupe River at Gruene and New Braunfels is 45 minutes northeast for summer tubing.
Wikipedia ↗Government Canyon and Helotes
Government Canyon State Natural Area near Helotes has 40 miles of trails and dinosaur tracks (open Friday-Monday). Finish at Floore's Country Store in Old Town Helotes, a 1940s dance hall that still books live Texas country most weekends.
Official site ↗Spurs, Fiesta and the rodeo
The Spurs play at the Frost Bank Center on the east side, with military ticket deals through ITT. The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo runs in February and Fiesta takes over the city for ten days in late April — both are why per diem and hotel rates spike in Feb-March, so book early if your TDY overlaps.
Wikipedia ↗Insider tips
- 01Heat is the hazard here. Summer PT and the Thursday parade both happen early because afternoons run 96-100 F with humidity; hydrate the day before, not the morning of, and keep a gallon of water in the car.
- 02Flash flooding is the other one. May is the wettest month and low-water crossings on the west and south sides go under fast — 'Turn Around, Don't Drown' is not a slogan here, it is how people die every spring.
- 03Wednesday and Thursday are graduation days. Luke East and Military Drive jam from about 0630; TDY folks should use Valley Hi or Medina those mornings or be inside the gate before 0700.
- 04Call the Gateway Inn as soon as you have orders and again a week out. Graduation families fill on-base rooms and the Military Drive hotels every single week, and February-March adds the rodeo. Get your non-availability statement in writing before you book anywhere else.
- 05Wilford Hall is not an emergency room anymore. Since April 2026 it is an urgent care; for a real emergency dial 911 and expect a civilian ER or BAMC across town. Know which one is nearest your lodging on day one.
- 06Texas is TRICARE West / TriWest since 2025. If you are PCSing from an East Region base, re-enroll and move your payment info before you arrive or you will lose a week sorting referrals.
- 07The base is really four places: main base, Security Hill (16th AF and the cyber wings), the Kelly Field Annex (149th FW, Port San Antonio) and the Medina Annex (Training Annex, Security Forces and enlisted PME). Ask which one you report to before you pick lodging; they are 10-15 minutes apart.
- 08Pack a light rain shell, sunscreen and running shoes, not a coat. Winters occasionally dip below freezing for a night or two and the city shuts down on ice, but most December-February days are 60s and sunny.
