Overview
Fort Sam Houston is the home of Army medicine. The Medical Education and Training Campus graduates more than 16,500 students a year from 49 medical programs, with around 5,500 students on campus at any moment — combat medics, aerospace medical technicians, corpsmen, lab techs, radiology and surgical techs — making it the largest enlisted medical training facility in the world. Add Brooke Army Medical Center with its Level I trauma center and Institute of Surgical Research burn unit, the Army Medical Center of Excellence, U.S. Army North and Army South, and the 502d Air Base Wing that runs the joint base, and you get more than 36,000 active-duty and civilian personnel plus a constant stream of TDY medical students, residents, and staff.
The post sits inside the city, about three miles northeast of downtown San Antonio and eight miles from the airport. The climate is hot and long: August highs average 97°F, the thermometer reaches the 90s on 122 days a year, and January still averages 63°F. What matters to a TDY traveler here is simple — a car (post is walkable but the city is not), a plan for the heat, and lodging booked early because on-post rooms are contested by students, residents, and wounded-warrior families every week of the year.
Weather
San Antonio averages 122 days a year in the 90s and about 18 days over 100°F, with August highs near 97°F and lows around 76°F. Winters are short and mild — January averages 63/41 — and the 32 inches of annual rain arrive mostly in spring and again in September and October, often as flash-flood storms.
Best months
October through April
Tough months
June through September — sustained triple-digit heat, and May and October storms can flood low-water crossings across Bexar County
Getting there
- Fly into San Antonio International (SAT), about eight miles and 15 minutes from post via US-281 south to Hildebrand or Loop 410 east to Harry Wurzbach. Rent a car — there is no practical shuttle between the airport, Fort Sam, and the METC/BAMC campuses, and most crashpads and restaurants are a drive away.
- Four gates run 24 hours: Main Walters Street, Harry Wurzbach East, SAMMC IH-35, and Schofield. New Braunfels (Mon-Fri 0600-2100), Winans (Mon-Fri 0430-2200, weekends 0600-2200), Jadwin (Mon-Fri 0600-1800), Wilson, and SAMMC Beach keep limited hours. JBSA updated several Fort Sam gate schedules in March 2026, so confirm on the official JBSA gate-hours page before you drive.
- Visitors without a DoD ID use the Walters Street Visitor Control Center at the main gate or the BAMC/IH-35 VCC; the BAMC VCC is listed as 24/7 and sources differ on Walters hours, so confirm before an off-hours arrival. Bring a REAL ID-compliant driver's license (or passport), vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Commercial trucks and deliveries use the Jadwin gate commercial vehicle center.
- Morning traffic stacks up on IH-35 near the BAMC gate and on Harry Wurzbach between 0630 and 0800 when METC formations and hospital shifts change. Fiesta week in late April and Spurs home games at the Frost Bank Center (just east of post) add evening congestion on Houston Street and IH-35.
TDY lodging
On base
On-post lodging is IHG Army Hotels, not Air Force Inns
- Phone
- 210-357-2705
- TLF (families)
- Available
- On-post lodging is IHG Army Hotels, not Air Force Inns — the flagship is the Holiday Inn Express Powless House at 3298 George Beach Ave (Bldg 592 and Bldg 1384 are additional IHG buildings across post).
- Reservations and the front desk: 210-357-2705.
- Priority goes to wounded warriors and their families at BAMC and the Center for the Intrepid, then official travelers; students on PCS orders to METC are usually housed in dorms by their schoolhouse.
- If IHG cannot house you on your dates, request the non-availability number and lodge commercially — pet and TLF-style suite availability is limited, so ask at booking.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
Our Oakwood house — 4 bedrooms, 3 baths — is a short drive from the Walters Street and BAMC gates and is priced inside the $137 San Antonio lodging rate with DTS-ready receipts. Full kitchen, laundry, and off-street parking; send us your course dates and we will hold a room.
JBSA-Fort Sam Houston crashpadsHousing & BAH

- Off post, the citywide average apartment rent was roughly $1,260-$1,600 in mid-2026 depending on source, with one-bedrooms near Alamo Heights around $1,100; buying is realistic here, and San Antonio remains one of the more affordable large-city markets in Texas.
BAH 2026 · MHA TX285
| Grade | With dependents | Without dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $1,869 | $1,500 |
| O-3 | $2,127 | $2,007 |
- 2026 BAH for MHA TX285 (San Antonio) is approximately $1,869 with dependents / $1,500 without for an E-5, and $2,127 with / $2,007 without for an O-3, per published 2026 tables (down about 2.9 percent from 2025).

Converse / Windcrest / Kirby
Closest budget-friendly suburbs east of Loop 410 — quick to the IH-35 and Schofield gates and to Randolph, with Judson ISD schools and older but affordable housing.
Schools & childcare
- Fort Sam Houston has its own on-post district: Fort Sam Houston ISD runs Fort Sam Houston Elementary and Robert G. Cole Middle/High School (4001 Winans Rd, 210-368-8730). Enrollment is limited to families living on post or at Camp Bullis and children of installation employees.
- Both FSHISD campuses hold the Texas Purple Star designation for military-family support. Off post, Alamo Heights ISD, North East ISD, Judson ISD, and Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD serve the neighborhoods most families choose, with strong JROTC and STEM programs in NEISD and SCUCISD.
- The JBSA School Liaison Program office for Fort Sam Houston is at 2514 Funston Rd, Bldg 2515, 210-221-5151 — call before you PCS for district comparisons, transfer rules, and the Interstate Compact.
- Two Child Development Centers operate on post; register at MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders (waitlists are common) or call CDC registration at 210-221-3835.

Off duty

River Walk and the Alamo
Three miles from the Walters Street gate. Walk the river loop, tour the Alamo (free, timed entry), and eat at the Pearl end rather than the tourist strip. Go early in summer — the river level is brutal after noon.

The Pearl and Broadway
The old Pearl Brewery, two miles south of post on Broadway, is San Antonio's best food-and-drink block: Cured, Southerleigh, Bakery Lorraine, a weekend farmers market, and Hotel Emma's bar. Easy bike ride along the Museum Reach of the river.

Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01The heat is a mission hazard — 122 days in the 90s and formations at 0600 for a reason. Hydrate before you land, and never leave a METC uniform or laptop in a closed car at 1500.
- 02Flash floods kill more people in Central Texas than any other weather; Turn Around, Don't Drown applies to every low-water crossing in Bexar County, especially in May and October.
- 03Four gates run 24/7 (Walters, Harry Wurzbach East, SAMMC IH-35, Schofield) but the rest close on weekends or early evening — check the JBSA gate page before a late flight; hours changed in March 2026.
- 04Book IHG Army Hotels the day you get orders; wounded-warrior families and BAMC residents have priority and the non-availability memo is common. Get the number in writing before you sign a commercial lease.
- 05Per diem here is only $137 lodging outside the February peak — a hotel on Broadway will eat that fast. A shared crashpad room with a kitchen keeps you inside the rate and off the DFAC line.
- 06Fort Sam is an Army post inside an Air Force-run joint base: expect Army terminology (DFAC, PX, Housing Services Office, IHG rather than Air Force Inns) and a 502d Air Base Wing running the gates and services.
- 07PCS families: the on-post FSHISD schools are excellent but tied to on-post housing, and Hunt's waitlist for the historic homes can run months — apply at jbsahunthousing.com before you leave your current base.
- 08Pack for both seasons if you arrive between November and March — a 75°F afternoon can turn into a 35°F 'blue norther' by morning, and the occasional ice storm shuts the city down for a day.
