Overview

Fort Hood is the home of III Armored Corps, 1st Cavalry Division, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, First Army Division West, and the U.S. Army Operational Test Command, plus two airfields, Robert Gray Army Airfield and Hood Army Airfield. Military OneSource counts about 33,600 active-duty Soldiers, 15,000 civilians and contractors, and 41,000 retirees and family members, on a 335-square-mile reservation 60 miles north of Austin and 50 miles south of Waco. The post carried the name Fort Cavazos from May 2023 until July 28, 2025, when the Army restored the Fort Hood name in honor of Col. Robert B. Hood, a World War I Distinguished Service Cross recipient; orders, signage, and websites still mix the two, so search for both. What cycles through is operational traffic: mobilizing Guard and Reserve units, brigade train-ups for NTC and overseas rotations, test events on West Fort Hood, and a steady stream of staff and contractor TDYs.

Killeen is a military town first, a Central Texas suburb second, with Harker Heights on the east side, Copperas Cove on the west, and the Belton, Temple, and Salado corridor along I-35 a half hour out. Summers are long and hot, with July highs around 95 degrees and stretches above 100, while winters are mild with highs near 58 in January and the occasional ice storm that shuts the post for a day. Spring brings the wettest months and real severe-weather risk. For a TDY traveler that means a place with good air conditioning, a short drive to the Main Gate or Clear Creek Gate, and a plan for the I-14 rush that starts before 6 a.m. on PT mornings.

Weather

Killeen has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Average highs run around 95 degrees in July and August, with a handful of 100-plus days most summers, and about 58 degrees in January. Annual rainfall is roughly 32 inches, with May the wettest month and spring the peak season for severe thunderstorms and hail.

Best months

October through November and March through April

Tough months

July through early September for heat, and late spring for severe storms; a winter ice event can close the post for a day or two

Getting there

  • Fly into Killeen Regional Airport (GRK), which shares the runway with Robert Gray Army Airfield on West Fort Hood; American Airlines connects through DFW with several flights a day, and it is about 15 minutes to the Main Gate via US-190 and I-14.
  • Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) is the big-airport option at roughly 75 minutes via I-35 north and I-14 west; DFW is about 2.5 hours. Rental cars are available at all three, and you will want one here.
  • The Main Gate (Bernie Beck Gate) on T.J. Mills Boulevard off I-14 and the Clear Creek Gate by the Main Exchange are open 24/7. Mayborn, Warrior Way, Santa Fe, and 79th Street gates run reduced hours, most closed on weekends and federal holidays, so confirm current hours on the garrison visitor information page before you plan a route.
  • The Marvin Leath Visitor Welcome Center, Building 69012 next to the Main Gate, is open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at (254) 287-9909. Visitors without a DoD ID can pre-enroll at pass.aie.army.mil, and everyone 18 and older needs a REAL ID-compliant ID or a passport, CAC, or enhanced driver's license.
  • I-14 (US-190) is the spine of the area and backs up at the Main Gate and Clear Creek exits from about 5:30 to 7 a.m. and again from 4:30 to 6 p.m.; leave 15 extra minutes on PT mornings and during division-wide exercises.
  • The HOP (Hill Country Transit District) runs fare-free Connector circulator and micro-transit routes on post and buses into Killeen, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove, Temple, and Belton at (254) 933-3700, but for most TDY travelers a car is the practical answer.

TDY lodging

On base

On-post lodging is IHG Army Hotels: the Holiday Inn Express Keith Ware Hall at 36006 Wratten Drive, front desk

  • On-post lodging is IHG Army Hotels: the Holiday Inn Express Keith Ware Hall at 36006 Wratten Drive, front desk (254) 532-8233, with more than 250 rooms, and a Candlewood Suites in Building 144 that suits stays of a week or longer with in-room kitchens.
  • Book through IHG Army Hotels at ihg.com/armyhotels or the central reservations line at 1-877-711-8326, and use the Fort Hood page even though some listings still say Fort Hood.
  • Official travelers get priority, but mobilization surges, brigade deployments, and test events fill the post regularly, so if the hotel cannot cover your dates ask for a certificate of non-availability at the time you book and keep it with your DTS voucher.
  • Confirm check-in hours and pet policy directly with the front desk, since neither is published consistently online.

Off-base per diem

  • Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
  • No current rate is quoted here.
  • Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
  • A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.

The crashpad option

Base Crashpads does not have a listed property at Fort Hood yet, and we are actively expanding to Killeen, Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove because the mobilization, test, and rotational TDY traffic here runs for weeks at a time. If you own or manage a furnished home near the Main Gate or Clear Creek Gate and want to list it, or if you are on orders to Fort Hood and want to be notified when a pad opens, reach out through the site and we will connect you.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • On-post housing is privatized as Fort Hood Family Housing, managed day to day by WinnResidential Military Housing Services after Lendlease sold its U.S. military housing portfolio in 2025; the leasing office is at (254) 220-4799 and the site is fthoodhousing.com.
  • Homes run two to four bedrooms by pay grade and family size, and the popular neighborhoods carry wait lists that stretch in the summer PCS season, so apply the day you have orders.
  • Off post, Killeen is one of the more affordable rental markets in Texas, with single-family homes and townhomes concentrated in south Killeen, Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove.
  • Belton, Temple, and Salado cost a little more and add commute but bring stronger schools and lake access.
  • Landlords here are used to military clauses and short PCS timelines.

BAH 2026

  • The MHA is Fort Hood, TX, which covers Killeen, Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove.
  • For 2026, an E-5 draws $1,695 with dependents and $1,530 without; an O-3 draws $2,340 with dependents and $1,833 without.
  • Confirm your own grade and dependency status on the DTMO BAH calculator, and note that Belton and Temple addresses fall in the same MHA for BAH purposes even though rents differ.
NeighborhoodCommute

Harker Heights

Newer subdivisions, the area's better restaurants and shopping along I-14, and the default pick for families and officers

Commute: 15 to 20 minutes west on I-14 to the Main Gate or Clear Creek Gate

South and west Killeen

Closest to post, widest rental inventory at the lowest rents, and where most junior enlisted families and TDY crashpads land

Commute: 10 minutes up Fort Hood Street or T.J. Mills Boulevard to the Main Gate

Copperas Cove

Smaller town on the west side with its own ISD, quieter streets, and quick access to West Fort Hood and Robert Gray Army Airfield

Commute: 10 to 15 minutes east on US-190 to Clear Creek Gate; 5 minutes to the West Fort Hood gate

Belton, Temple, and Salado

The I-35 corridor: Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow, Baylor Scott & White in Temple, Salado's village feel, and the schools many families move for

Commute: 30 to 40 minutes west on I-14 to the Main Gate

Schools & childcare

  • Fort Hood has no DoDEA schools; children living on post attend Killeen ISD, which operates six on-post elementary schools, Audie Murphy Middle School, and an on-post Early College High School run with Central Texas College where students can earn an associate degree with their diploma.
  • Off post, Killeen ISD covers Killeen and Harker Heights, Copperas Cove ISD covers the west side, and Belton ISD, Temple ISD, and Salado ISD serve the I-35 corridor; many families choose Belton or Salado specifically for the schools.
  • The Fort Hood School Support Services office and School Liaison Officers in Building 36000 on Darnall Loop help with enrollment, records transfer, and Interstate Compact issues for incoming families.
  • Child and Youth Services runs multiple Child Development Centers, school-age care, and youth sports across the post; register on MilitaryChildCare.com as early as possible because CDC wait lists are long at a post this size.
  • Central Texas College sits at the Main Gate and Texas A&M Central Texas is in Killeen, both heavy on military and veteran students; the Fort Hood Education Center handles tuition assistance and testing.
06

Healthcare

  • Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center (CRDAMC) is the on-post hospital, a 947,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2016 with a full emergency department, inpatient care, labor and delivery, and specialty clinics serving more than 42,000 active-duty personnel and about 145,000 family members and veterans within 40 miles.
  • Texas moved to the TRICARE West Region under TriWest Healthcare Alliance on January 1, 2025; TDY travelers on Prime should keep their home PCM and use CRDAMC or a network urgent care, and the transition produced referral and payment hiccups locally, so call TriWest before assuming a specialty referral carried over.
  • Off post, AdventHealth Central Texas in Killeen and Seton Medical Center Harker Heights have the nearest civilian emergency rooms, and Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple is the region's Level I trauma center, about 35 minutes east on I-14.
  • CRDAMC runs the main pharmacy with additional pharmacies at the Clear Creek Exchange and the outlying clinics; TRICARE network retail pharmacies in Killeen and Harker Heights fill routine prescriptions for travelers.
  • Dental for active duty is through the Fort Hood dental clinics; family members use TRICARE Dental Program network providers off post.

On base

Commissary & Exchange

The Clear Creek Commissary, Building 50001 on Clear Creek Road at (254) 287-6648, is the main grocery, and the Clear Creek Main Exchange complex next door has the food court, Military Clothing, and the gas station; a second commissary and several Expresses serve the east side of post.

Fitness

Multiple Family and MWR fitness centers are spread across post, including the Ironhorse and Abrams physical fitness centers, most open early for unit PT and free to DoD ID holders; see hood.armymwr.com for current hours.

Outdoor recreation

Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA), about 30 minutes east on the lake at (254) 287-2523, has cabins, RV and tent camping, a beach, boat rentals, and a challenge course; Outdoor Recreation on post rents boats, campers, and gear.

Dining

The Phantom Centralized HUB in the Iron Horse Dining Facility offers grab-and-go, food trucks, and prepared plates for Soldiers; Phantom Warrior Stadium, Building 50023, is the 48-lane bowling center with a grill, and the Clear Creek food court covers lunch.

Legal & finance

The Fort Hood Legal Assistance Office handles wills, powers of attorney, and lease reviews; the Army Community Service Financial Readiness Program and the Fort Hood National Bank and credit union branches on post cover the money side.

Chapel & pets

Multiple chapels on post run Catholic, Protestant, and other services; the Fort Hood Veterinary Center provides pet registration and routine care for authorized patrons, and the Fort Hood Family Housing pet policy and the IHG pet rules should be confirmed before you bring an animal.

Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area

BLORA is Fort Hood's own lakeside park about 30 minutes east: cabins, campsites, a swim beach, boat and kayak rentals, mountain bike trails, and a zipline and climbing wall challenge course. Bring your DoD ID; it is the easiest weekend on the water for a TDY traveler without a boat.

Insider tips

  1. 01Search for both Fort Hood and Fort Cavazos when you book lodging, rental cars, or anything on a map app; the 2023 and 2025 renames left listings under both names.
  2. 02The Main Gate and Clear Creek Gate are the only two open 24/7; do not plan a pre-dawn arrival through Mayborn or 79th Street.
  3. 03If you fly into GRK, remember it sits on West Fort Hood; the civilian terminal is outside the fence, but your rental-car drive to the main cantonment is on US-190 through Copperas Cove traffic.
  4. 04PT traffic on I-14 starts before 6 a.m. and the Main Gate backs up onto the interstate; a crashpad in south Killeen or Harker Heights with a back route via Fort Hood Street or Rancier Avenue saves real time.
  5. 05Killeen and Bell County pay the standard CONUS per diem, so a hotel that quotes over $110 needs a non-availability letter and command approval; a crashpad at the rate keeps the voucher simple.
  6. 06Summer heat is no joke; unit safety briefs run heat-category flags, and your crashpad needs working AC and shade for the truck.
  7. 07Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow are the free weekends; BLORA cabins are cheap and book up on holiday weekends, so reserve early.
  8. 08Mobilizing through First Army Division West? Ask your unit about pre-arranged lodging before you book anything; many rotations are housed in blocks and you do not want to eat a cancellation fee.

FAQ

Is it Fort Hood or Fort Hood?
Both names refer to the same post. It was Fort Hood until May 2023, Fort Cavazos from 2023 to 2025 in honor of Gen. Richard E. Cavazos, and Fort Hood again since July 28, 2025, now honoring Col. Robert B. Hood, a World War I Distinguished Service Cross recipient. Orders, lodging listings, and maps still mix the two, so search for both when you book.
What is the FY2026 per diem for Fort Hood?
Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office. No current rate is quoted here. Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates. A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
How do I get a visitor pass for family or contractors?
Pre-enroll at pass.aie.army.mil, then stop at the Marvin Leath Visitor Welcome Center, Building 69012 next to the Main Gate, open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at (254) 287-9909. Everyone 18 and older needs a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport, CAC, or enhanced driver's license, and a sponsor is not required for an online day or multi-day pass.
Which side of post should I stay on?
For III Armored Corps, 1st Cavalry Division, and the hospital, stay in Killeen or Harker Heights and use the Main Gate or Clear Creek Gate. For Operational Test Command, Robert Gray Army Airfield, or anything on West Fort Hood, Copperas Cove is closer and avoids the main cantonment traffic.
