Overview

Sheppard is AETC's biggest schoolhouse. The 82nd Training Wing runs more than 1,000 courses across 60-plus Air Force specialties (aircraft maintenance, civil engineering, munitions, aerospace ground equipment, telecom) for more than 60,000 airmen, soldiers, sailors, marines, and international students a year, while the 80th Flying Training Wing runs the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program with about 200 T-6 and T-38 aircraft and pilots from 14 NATO nations. Roughly 20,000 people are on base on a normal duty day, and the mix of tech-school students, ENJJPT lieutenants, PIT and IFF classes, and instructors on short orders keeps lodging under constant pressure.

Wichita Falls is a city of about 100,000 on the Red River, roughly 130 miles northwest of Dallas and about the same from Oklahoma City. It's flat, windy, and hot: July highs average in the upper 90s and the all-time record is 117°F. For a TDY traveler that means a car with working A/C, a short commute up I-44, and evenings that start after the sun drops. It's an easy town to live in, the cost of living is low, and a good crashpad is a big upgrade on the motel row along Central Freeway.

Weather

Wichita Falls averages July highs near 97°F with frequent 100-degree days, January highs in the mid-50s with lows near freezing, and about 30 inches of rain a year, much of it in spring thunderstorms. The all-time record is 117°F (June 1980), and the wind rarely quits.

Best months

October through November and March through April

Tough months

June through early September for heat above 100°F; April through June for severe thunderstorms and hail; occasional January ice storms

Getting there

  • Wichita Falls Regional Airport (SPS) shares its runways with Sheppard and sits about two miles from the Main Gate; American Eagle flies daily to DFW. Hertz, Avis, and Budget rent cars at the terminal. Many travelers fly into DFW instead and drive roughly 2.5 hours up US-287, which is often cheaper and gives you more flight options.
  • The Main Gate on TX-240 (Sheppard Access Road) is open 24/7. The Missile Road Gate runs weekdays 0600-1630, and the Clinic (Hospital) Gate is inbound-only 0600-0800 and outbound-only 1600-1800 on weekdays. Hours change during exercises and holidays; confirm on the base's REAL ID & Base Entry page before you arrive.
  • The Visitor Control Center is at the Missile Road Gate, Bldg 1405 on State Route 240 (940-676-7441). It's a weekday, daytime operation; published hours vary by source (0600 or 0630 to 1700 or 1800), so call ahead. Visitors without a DoD ID need a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, and anyone sponsoring a guest should submit the request before the visitor arrives.
  • Traffic is light by Texas standards, but the Main Gate backs up at 0700 and 1600 on weekdays when tech-school formations move. A big class start or graduation weekend can also fill the gate; add ten minutes on Fridays.

  • It's a big operation, more than 650 rooms across 31 buildings, including 2- and 4-bedroom TLFs, VQ/VAQ rooms, and DV suites.
  • Pet-friendly TLF units take up to two cats or dogs; no pets in student VQ rooms.
  • Students on a class roster are booked automatically and are not issued non-availability forms; everyone else should call first, take the non-availability number if the Inn is full, and lodge commercially.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Family housing is privatized under Balfour Beatty Communities (Sheppard AFB Homes), with 2-, 3-, and 4-bedroom homes across three neighborhoods: Wind Creek Village, Heritage Heights, and Freedom Estates.
  • Leasing for active-duty Air Force families is 940-613-0709; the Military Housing Office is at 310 H Ave, Bldg 373, 940-676-1840, with walk-ins weekday mornings and appointments in the afternoon.
  • Off base is cheap by military standards: Zillow put the typical Wichita Falls home value around $177,000 in 2025, apartments run roughly $640 for a studio to about $950 for a two-bedroom, and a three-bedroom rental house in Iowa Park lists around $1,100-$1,600.
  • Buying is realistic here; many families cover a VA loan payment with BAH.

BAH 2026 · MHA TX288

E-5$1,491$1,182
O-3$2,325$1,887
  • 2026 BAH for MHA TX288 (Wichita Falls / Sheppard AFB) is approximately $1,491 with dependents and $1,182 without for an E-5, and $2,325 with dependents and $1,887 without for an O-3, per published 2026 tables.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
NeighborhoodCommute

Burkburnett

Small town just north of the base with well-regarded Burkburnett ISD schools, rents that undercut the city, and a straight shot down I-44 to the gate; where a lot of base housing residents in Freedom Estates already send their kids.

Commute: ~15 min

Faith Village / Southwest Wichita Falls

Established mid-century brick homes near Kemp Boulevard, Sikes Senter, and Midwestern State, with $150-250K price tags and the city's best restaurant density; the default choice for families who want to be in town.

Commute: ~15 min

Northside / Weeks Park

The closest city neighborhoods to the base, older housing stock with rents around $1,000, quick access to I-44, and Weeks Park golf and trails nearby; convenience over polish.

Commute: ~8 min

Iowa Park

A quiet town west of the city on US-287 with newer subdivisions, a strong small-district school system, and three-bedroom rentals around $1,100-$1,600; popular with families who want land and don't mind a longer drive.

Commute: ~20 min

Holliday and Lakeside City

Southwest of town near Lake Wichita, with well-regarded Holliday ISD, newer homes on bigger lots, and prices that fit BAH; the longest commute but the most breathing room.

Commute: ~25 min

Schools & childcare

  • There is one on-base school, Sheppard Elementary (Pre-K through 6th), operated by Wichita Falls ISD. Wind Creek Village and Heritage Heights residents are zoned to Wichita Falls ISD; Freedom Estates residents attend Burkburnett ISD.
  • Most military kids attend Wichita Falls ISD or Burkburnett ISD, with families also choosing Iowa Park CISD, City View ISD, Holliday ISD, Henrietta ISD, and Archer City ISD. Texas's Purple Star designation identifies military-friendly campuses; ask the School Liaison which schools currently hold it.
  • The School Liaison Office is at 709 9th Ave, Bldg 960, 940-676-6774; the office publishes a Pre-K-12 education guide each year at 82fss.com that covers zoning, transfers, and registration.
  • Childcare: the Child Development Center is at 108 I Ave, Bldg 195, 940-676-2038, for ages 6 weeks to 5 years, and Family Child Care homes fill in the gaps. Request care through MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders; waits are common.
06

Healthcare

  • The 82nd Medical Group is an outpatient clinic, not a hospital, offering primary care, dental, pharmacy, mental health, and specialty clinics. There is no emergency room. The appointment line is 940-676-1847 (option 2 after hours for the Nurse Advice Line); MHS GENESIS handles online booking and messaging.
  • Emergencies go to United Regional Health Care System in Wichita Falls, the area's Level II trauma center, about 15 minutes from the Main Gate. Urgent care options are also available in town; call the Nurse Advice Line first when possible so the visit is covered.
  • Sheppard is in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance since January 1, 2025 (888-874-9378, tricare.mil/west). Texas moved from East to West in that changeover, so update your regional contractor if you PCS from the East.

The Wichita River, as seen from Lucy Park in Wichita Falls, TX

Lucy Park and The Falls

The city built a 54-foot artificial waterfall in 1987 to replace the one it was named for. Lucy Park sits on the Wichita River a few minutes south of downtown, with a paved loop, a log cabin, and the falls a mile up the trail; a good first-evening walk after a day of in-processing.

Lake Arrowhead State Park

Fifteen miles south of town, Arrowhead has a prairie-dog town, shoreline camping, an equestrian trail, and decent bass fishing. Outdoor Recreation on base rents kayaks and camping gear, and a weekday evening on the water is the best way to beat the heat.

#1 is not happy

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

About 80 minutes north across the Red River near Lawton, Oklahoma, the refuge protects 60,000 acres of granite mountains, bison, longhorns, and elk. Drive Mount Scott at sunset, hike Elk Mountain, and stop in Medicine Park for a meal on the way home. This is the weekend trip everyone at Sheppard eventually makes.

Hotter'N Hell Hundred riders stop and take their photo with 82nd Training Wing airmen in training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, Aug

Hotter'N Hell Hundred

Every August the country's biggest single-day century ride takes over Wichita Falls: thousands of cyclists, 10- to 100-mile routes, a downtown expo, and full hotels. Ride it, volunteer at a rest stop, or at least book your lodging around it.

Downtown and the Museum Row

Downtown is compact and walkable: the Kemp Center for the Arts, the Museum of North Texas History, the World's Littlest Skyscraper, and the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame are all within a few blocks. Craft beer and Tex-Mex fill in the evenings along 8th and Indiana.

Castaway Cove and Weeks Park

Castaway Cove water park is the summer answer for families, and Weeks Park on the north side has golf, tennis, and trails close to the base. River Bend Nature Center adds a butterfly conservatory and 18 acres of native prairie for a quieter afternoon.

Dallas-Fort Worth weekends

DFW is about 2.5 hours down US-287, close enough for a Saturday of Stockyards, Rangers or Cowboys games, or a real airport. Oklahoma City is a similar drive north on I-44 for Thunder games and Bricktown.

Insider tips

  1. 01The heat is not a joke: 100-degree days run from June into September and the record is 117°F. Park in shade, keep water in the car, and schedule runs before 0700 or after dark.
  2. 02Spring is severe-weather season. Wichita Falls sits in Tornado Alley, and April-June hail can total a rental car; know where the shelter is at your lodging and keep a weather app with alerts on.
  3. 03Winter is short but ice storms happen. A January glaze shuts the city down for a day or two because there's little plow capacity; if you PCS in winter, keep a scraper and a blanket in the car.
  4. 04Students on a class roster are booked into the Sheppard Inn automatically and won't get a non-availability form, so don't book a crashpad until you've confirmed your status with the Inn (940-676-4538).
  5. 05Book off-base lodging well ahead of late August: the Hotter'N Hell Hundred fills every hotel in town, and big tech-school class starts can do the same on shorter notice.
  6. 06The Main Gate is the only 24/7 entry; the Missile Road and Clinic gates close early and the Clinic Gate is one-way. Plan late arrivals through TX-240 and the Main Gate.
  7. 07Fly into DFW and drive if SPS fares are steep; it's 2.5 hours on US-287 with easy rental returns, and you'll have a car for the Wichita Mountains anyway.
  8. 08PCS families: Balfour Beatty homes go fast in summer; call 940-613-0709 as soon as you have orders, and ask the School Liaison (940-676-6774) which district your neighborhood feeds before you sign a lease.

FAQ

Will DTS reimburse a crashpad at Sheppard AFB?
Yes, if a room is not available on base. Call the Sheppard Inn (940-676-4538) first; if it's full you receive a non-availability number and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 standard CONUS rate of $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE. Students on a class roster are booked automatically and generally won't be issued a non-availability form, so confirm your status before booking off base.
Which gate should I use when I arrive?
Use the Main Gate on TX-240 (Sheppard Access Road), the only gate open 24/7. The Missile Road Gate runs weekdays 0600-1630, and the Clinic Gate is inbound-only in the morning and outbound-only in the afternoon. Visitors without a DoD ID check in at the Visitor Control Center at the Missile Road Gate (940-676-7441) during weekday hours with a REAL ID-compliant license or passport.
Is there a hospital on Sheppard AFB?
No. The 82nd Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room. Emergencies go to United Regional Health Care System in Wichita Falls, about 15 minutes away; for urgent care after hours, call the appointment line (940-676-1847, option 2) for the Nurse Advice Line. Sheppard is in the TRICARE West Region under TriWest.
Where do families live near Sheppard AFB?
On base, Balfour Beatty's Wind Creek Village, Heritage Heights, and Freedom Estates. Off base, most families pick Burkburnett (15 minutes north, Burkburnett ISD), southwest Wichita Falls around Faith Village and Kemp Boulevard, Iowa Park to the west, or Holliday and Lakeside City for newer homes and Holliday ISD. All are 10-25 minutes from the Main Gate.
