Sheppard is two very different bases sharing one flight line. On one side, the 82nd Training Wing pushes more than 60,000 joint and international students a year through maintenance, civil engineering, munitions and AGE courses. On the other, the 80th Flying Training Wing runs Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training with student pilots from 14 NATO nations in the T-6A and T-38C. Both populations arrive with the same question: where do I sleep, and who pays for it? This guide walks through Sheppard AFB lodging the way people on orders actually experience it — the Sheppard Inn, the non-availability process, off-base options, and what the money looks like on a Wichita Falls budget. If you already know you want a furnished house instead of a hotel room, start at our Sheppard AFB crashpads page.
What does Sheppard AFB lodging actually mean for your orders?
Your lodging plan depends almost entirely on one thing: whether you are TDY (temporary duty — a trip on orders, with per diem) or PCS (permanent change of station — a move, with a housing allowance). Sheppard has a lot of both, and they don't share a playbook.
- Tech-school students and prior-service retrainees. Most are on a class roster and get booked into on-base quarters automatically. Some are on TDY, some are on PCS with a school in between.
- ENJJPT students. A year-long pilot course is a PCS for most participants, which means BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) and a real lease, not a nightly rate. Our UPT survival guide covers how that year runs day to day.
- Short-course and staff travelers. Instructor-pilot candidates, Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals students, evaluators, MTLs on temporary assignment, contractors and inspection teams. These are the classic per diem trips — weeks to a few months, paid at a nightly rate against receipts.
Wichita Falls and Wichita County are not a listed per diem locality, so the FY2026 standard CONUS rate applies: $110 a night for lodging and $68 a day for meals and incidentals (M&IE), with first and last travel days paid at 75%, or $51. The rate is flat year-round — no seasonal spike. Always confirm on the live Sheppard AFB per diem page before you book, because localities do get added in new fiscal years.
That $110 ceiling is the whole story for TDY travelers. Over a 30-night month it's roughly $3,300 of lodging authority. What you get for it is entirely up to how you book.
What rules decide how much of the money you keep?
Three rules do most of the work. Learn them once and you stop losing money on every voucher.
1. On-base lodging comes first
The Joint Travel Regulations (JTR) generally require you to use government quarters when they're available at your TDY location. At Sheppard that means the Sheppard Inn, the Air Force Inns operation at 400 Ave J, Bldg 1600. It is not small — more than 650 rooms across 31 buildings, including VQ and VAQ rooms, 2- and 4-bedroom temporary lodging facilities (TLFs), and DV suites. Reservations run through 940-676-4538 or 940-676-2970, and the front desk is staffed 24 hours. Students on a class roster are generally booked for you.
2. If it's full, you need a non-A
When the Inn can't house you, it issues a non-availability number — a "non-A" — and that number is what makes commercial lodging reimbursable. Get it in writing, get it before you book, and put it in your DTS (Defense Travel System) authorization. Vouchers get returned more often for a missing or mismatched non-A than for almost anything else. Our walkthrough on how to get and file a non-A covers the exact fields and the common rejects.
3. Receipts decide whether you get paid
Lodging requires an itemized receipt showing nightly rate, dates and taxes as separate lines. A screenshot of a booking app, a card statement, or a lump-sum "paid in full" note will not survive a voucher review. If your lodging can't produce a proper receipt, it isn't really cheaper — it's just a problem you haven't had yet.
One more rule that matters at a training base: orders change. Weather cancels sorties. A washback adds weeks. A class start slides right. If your lease or booking can't move with your orders, you will eat the difference personally. That risk is why tech-school travelers and pilot-training students should ask about cancellation and extension terms before they ask about price. The full Sheppard AFB base guide has the gate hours, clinic details and local logistics that go with all of this.
Where should you live near Sheppard, and what does it cost?
Wichita Falls is compact and cheap by Texas standards, and the commute is genuinely short. From most neighborhoods it's a 10 to 15 minute drive up I-44 or US-287 to the TX-240 (Sheppard Access Road) exit and the Main Gate. Burkburnett is about 15 minutes down I-44 from the north.
| Area | What it's like | Commute |
|---|---|---|
| Northside / Weeks Park | Closest city neighborhoods to the base, older housing stock, rents around $1,000 | ~8 min |
| Burkburnett | Small town north of the base, well-regarded Burkburnett ISD schools | ~15 min |
| Faith Village / Southwest Wichita Falls | Established mid-century brick homes near Kemp Boulevard, Sikes Senter and Midwestern State | ~15 min |
| Iowa Park | Quiet town west on US-287, newer subdivisions, strong small district | ~20 min |
| Holliday / Lakeside City | Near Lake Wichita, newer homes on bigger lots, well-regarded Holliday ISD | ~25 min |
PCS families: on base or off?
Family housing at Sheppard is privatized under Balfour Beatty Communities, with 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom homes in Wind Creek Village, Heritage Heights and Freedom Estates. Leasing for active-duty Air Force families is 940-613-0709, and the Military Housing Office sits at 310 H Ave, Bldg 373. On base, you trade your BAH for the house and stop thinking about utilities. Off base, you keep whatever your rent doesn't consume.
For 2026, MHA TX288 (Wichita Falls / Sheppard AFB) pays roughly $1,491 with dependents and $1,182 without for an E-5, and about $2,325 with dependents and $1,887 without for an O-3, per published 2026 tables. Confirm your exact grade and dependent status on the DTMO BAH calculator before you sign anything. In a market where a solid three-bedroom rents well under those figures in several neighborhoods, off-base can leave real money on the table each month — which is a normal conversation for first-assignment instructor pilots settling in for a three-year tour.
TDY travelers: run the on-base number first
Before you compare anything, price the Sheppard Inn for your exact dates. Our on-base lodging cost calculator totals Air Force Inns nightly rates across a check-in and check-out date so you have a real baseline instead of a guess. Then compare against what $110 a night buys in town. A hotel priced at the cap gives you 300 square feet, a mini-fridge and a lobby waffle iron. For a two-week IFF course that's fine. For a six-month course, it wears on you.
What's the step-by-step plan for booking Sheppard AFB lodging?
- Read your orders for TDY vs. PCS and the report date. Everything else follows from those two lines.
- Call the Sheppard Inn. 940-676-4538 or 940-676-2970. If you're on a class roster, ask whether you've already been booked so you don't double up.
- Get the non-A in writing if they're full. Number, date, and the name of who issued it. Attach it in DTS.
- Price the commercial options against $110. Hotels, extended-stay, and furnished houses. Confirm the nightly rate excludes taxes so you don't blow the cap on paper.
- Ask three questions of any off-base option: Can you produce an itemized, DTS-ready receipt? What happens if my course extends? What happens if it cancels?
- Plan the drive in. Wichita Falls Regional (SPS) is about five minutes from the base; DFW is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive. Arrive through the Main Gate on TX-240 — it's the only gate open 24/7.
- File weekly if your course allows it. Long TDYs let you submit interim vouchers so you're not floating months of lodging on a personal card.
If you're new to the idea of splitting a furnished house with other students, our explainer on what a military crashpad is covers the mechanics, and the Keesler tech-school lodging breakdown shows how the same math plays out at another AETC schoolhouse where students, retrainees and instructors all compete for rooms.
How does a crashpad fit at Sheppard?
Honest version first: if the Sheppard Inn has a room for you, take it. It's on base, it's convenient, and the JTR expects it. TLF units are even pet-friendly, up to two cats or dogs, though student VQ rooms are not.
The case for a crashpad starts when the Inn is full and you're holding a non-A, or when you're looking at three to six months in a hotel room. At the same $110 ceiling, a furnished house gets you a full kitchen, laundry, a yard, a driveway you can park a rental car in, and a door that closes on a bedroom instead of a corridor. The kitchen matters more than people expect: with $68 a day in M&IE, cooking a few nights a week is the difference between breaking even and coming home with money.
Base Crashpads was started and is run by an active-duty Air Force pilot, and every stay comes with itemized, DTS-ready receipts. You post your base and dates, vetted local hosts bid, we pick the top three, and you choose — that's the whole process. Lease terms flex with orders, because we file the same vouchers you do and we know courses slide.
We're still expanding at Sheppard. Send us your dates and class length and we'll either match you with a furnished house inside the $110 rate or point you to a partner property if we're not ready in Wichita Falls yet. Either way you'll get a straight answer instead of a sales pitch.
Find a crashpad near your base — post your dates, see what local hosts bid, and compare it against the Inn and the hotels before you commit a single night.
Frequently asked questions
Will DTS reimburse a crashpad at Sheppard AFB?
Yes, if a room is not available on base. Call the Sheppard Inn at 940-676-4538 first. If it's full you receive a non-availability number and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 standard CONUS rate of $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE. Keep the non-A and an itemized receipt with your voucher.
Which gate should I use when I arrive?
Use the Main Gate on TX-240 (Sheppard Access Road) — it's the only gate open 24 hours. The Missile Road Gate runs weekdays 0600 to 1630, and the Clinic Gate is inbound-only in the morning and outbound-only in the afternoon. Visitors without a DoD ID check in at the visitor center.
Is there a hospital on Sheppard AFB?
No. The 82nd Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room. Emergencies go to United Regional Health Care System in Wichita Falls, about 15 minutes away. For after-hours urgent care questions, call the appointment line at 940-676-1847, option 2.
What is the per diem rate at Sheppard AFB?
Wichita Falls and Wichita County are not a listed locality, so the FY2026 standard CONUS rate applies: $110 lodging and $68 M&IE, with first and last travel days at $51. Rates are flat year-round. Re-check the live GSA page each fiscal year in case a locality rate is added.
Do ENJJPT students get per diem?
Usually not. A year-long pilot course is normally a PCS, which means you draw BAH and sign a local lease rather than claiming a nightly lodging rate. Short courses at Sheppard — IFF, instructor training, staff visits — are the ones typically run on TDY orders and per diem.
What happens to my lodging if my class washes back or extends?
Ask before you book. Hotels usually let you extend at the going rate if they have space, which is not guaranteed during peak class starts. Standard year-long leases do not flex at all. Crashpad terms are written to move with amended orders, and the itemized receipts adjust with them.
