Overview
Tinker is Air Force Materiel Command's workhorse. The 72nd Air Base Wing hosts the Air Force Sustainment Center and the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, the largest of the Air Force's three depots, which turns programmed depot maintenance on the KC-135, B-52, B-1B, and E-3 and overhauls engines for the Air Force, Navy, and foreign partners. Alongside the depot sit the 552nd Air Control Wing's E-3 Sentry AWACS fleet, the Reserve's 507th Air Refueling Wing and 513th Air Control Group, the Navy's Strategic Communications Wing One with its E-6B Mercury jets, and the 38th Cyberspace Engineering Installation Group. Roughly 26,000 to 30,000 military and civilians work here on a given weekday, which makes Tinker the largest single-site employer in Oklahoma and a magnet for engineers, program offices, aircrew students, and staff on TDY.
The base sits about five miles east of downtown Oklahoma City, bordered by Midwest City and Del City, south of I-40 and east of I-35. This is humid-subtropical prairie: summers run hot with July averaging 83°F and 100-degree stretches common, winters are short but can flip to ice, and spring means real tornado season — the metro has taken 13 violent tornadoes since records began, including the 1999 and 2013 Moore storms. For a TDY traveler that translates to three things: a car, a plan for severe weather alerts, and a place to stay with a real kitchen, because there is no Air Force Inn to fall back on.
Weather
Oklahoma City averages 83°F in July and 39°F in January, with about 36 inches of rain and roughly 9 inches of snow a year. The record spread runs from -17°F to 113°F, and the metro sits in the most active violent-tornado corridor in the country.
Best months
October through early November, and April if you can live with the storm risk — mild days, low humidity, and the state fair and football weekends.
Tough months
Late April through early June for severe weather and tornado outbreaks; July and August for sustained 95-105°F heat; January and February for the occasional ice storm that shuts the metro for a day or two.
Getting there
- Fly into Will Rogers World Airport (OKC) on the southwest side of the city. It is about 20 miles to Tinker: take I-44 east to I-240 east, then I-35 north or Sooner Road north to SE 29th Street and Air Depot Boulevard. Budget 25-30 minutes outside rush hour and rent a car — there is no practical transit to the base and nothing on the installation is walkable from the gate.
- The Tinker Gate on Air Depot Boulevard, just south of I-40, is the main entrance and is open 24/7. Eaker Gate and Gott Gate are also listed as 24-hour gates, with Gott restricted to military and DoD ID holders; Vance Gate runs as a morning-only commuter gate (roughly 5:30 to 7:30 a.m.), and the truck gate is restricted and daytime-only. Gate hours change with manning and threat conditions, so confirm on the 72nd ABW site or the base's social media before an early arrival.
- The Visitor Control Center is at the Tinker Gate on Air Depot Boulevard. Anyone without a DoD ID needs a sponsor and a pass; bring a valid REAL ID-compliant photo ID, and expect a background check for sponsored visitors 18 and older. Rental-car paperwork should be in the glove box. Check the 72nd ABW security forces page for current VCC hours before you drive out.
- Air Depot Boulevard and SE 29th Street back up at shift change — the depot runs a big first shift, so 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. are the worst windows at the Tinker Gate. Coming from downtown, I-40 east to the Air Depot exit is the fastest route; from Moore or Norman use I-35 north to I-240 east and come up Sooner Road.
TDY lodging
On base
There is no on-base lodging at Tinker.
- There is no on-base lodging at Tinker.
- Indian Hills Lodging, the base's Air Force Inns property, closed on 31 December 2022, and the 72nd Force Support Squadron now publishes a list of commercial hotels within roughly 10 miles of the base (Midwest City, Del City, Moore, south OKC, and Bricktown) at tinkerliving.com.
- The Air Force Inns central line (1-888-AF-LODGE) no longer lists a Tinker property.
- Confirm current non-availability and booking guidance with your unit or the FSS before you travel, since procedures can change if lodging ever reopens.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
We're expanding at Tinker AFB. With no Air Force Inn on base and a hotel list that runs from Tinker Diagonal to Bricktown, a furnished crashpad priced inside the $116 Oklahoma City rate with DTS-ready receipts is the obvious upgrade for anyone here longer than a week. Send us your dates and we'll tell you what we can open up near the Tinker Gate.
Tinker AFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Family housing on Tinker is privatized with Balfour Beatty Communities across six neighborhoods — McNarney Manor, Twining Fields, and Prairie Land for enlisted, Mitchell Heights East and West for officers, and Vandenberg Hills for key and essential personnel — with two- to four-bedroom homes, no deposit, and utilities and lawn care included.
- The Military Housing Office is 405-734-7350, Balfour Beatty leasing is 405-610-3637, and Unaccompanied Housing is 405-734-4421.
- Off base, Midwest City and Del City rent around $1,200 a month and homes average roughly $230,000 (2025 figures), with cost of living about 15 percent under the national average, so buying on a three-year tour is realistic for many families.
BAH 2026
- Tinker is in the Oklahoma City MHA.
- Published 2026 tables list approximately $1,365 (E-5 without dependents), $1,644 (E-5 with dependents), $1,773 (O-3 without dependents), and $1,974 (O-3 with dependents) per month, up about 1.5 percent from 2025.
- We found these on one housing site only, so confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator before you sign a lease.
Midwest City
The base's front yard: Mid-Del schools, 1960s-80s brick ranches under $250,000, the Sheraton and Reed Conference Center for TDY overflow, and a Tinker ID in half the driveways.
Del City
Smaller and cheaper than Midwest City with the same Mid-Del schools, older housing stock, and a straight shot up Sooner Road to the gate.
Choctaw
Semi-rural acreage lots and newer builds east of the base with its own well-regarded district, popular with families who want space and don't mind SE 15th or NE 23rd Street into work.
Moore / south Oklahoma City
New subdivisions, Moore Public Schools, and every chain restaurant on I-35 — the value play for families, with I-240 east as your daily commute and the 2013 tornado track as a reminder to buy a house with a shelter.
Norman
OU's college town with a lively Main Street, Lake Thunderbird nearby, and strong schools; pilots and civilians with spouses on campus make the I-35 drive daily.
Edmond
The north-side suburb with the metro's top-rated schools and newest retail, at the price of a 25-35 minute I-35 or Broadway Extension commute that grows with every new rooftop.
Schools & childcare
- No on-base schools. Children living in Tinker family housing attend Midwest City-Del City (Mid-Del) Public Schools, whose elementary, middle, and high schools sit within a few minutes of the housing areas and enroll a large military population.
- Mid-Del, Choctaw-Nicoma Park, Moore, Norman, and Edmond are the districts most Tinker families choose among; Oklahoma participates in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children and runs a Purple Star school designation, so ask the School Liaison which campuses currently hold it.
- School Liaison Program: 405-734-3683, in the Military & Family Readiness Center at 6001 Arnold Street, Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call before the move for records transfer, credit and graduation questions, and EFMP coordination.
- Three Child Development Centers serve the base — CDC East (405-734-4212), CDC South (405-582-9026), and CDC West (405-734-3646) — open Monday-Friday 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Get on the list at MilitaryChildCare.com the day you have orders; Family Child Care homes are the backup while you wait.
Healthcare
- The 72nd Medical Group operates an outpatient clinic on base — primary care, pharmacy, and ancillary services — but it is not a hospital and has no emergency room. Enroll or check your PCM through the TRICARE Online patient portal, and confirm the current appointment line on tinker.tricare.mil.
- Emergencies go off base: SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital – Midwest City is the closest ER to the gate, with the OU Health and Integris hospitals in Oklahoma City a 15-20 minute drive. Call 911 from anywhere on the installation.
- Oklahoma moved to the TRICARE West Region under TriWest Healthcare Alliance in the 2025 regional realignment, so referrals, urgent care authorizations, and network questions go through TriWest, not Humana Military. Re-verify your region in milConnect if you PCS from an East Region base.
On base
- Commissary
Full-size DeCA commissary on the main base; stock up before severe-weather days, because the metro empties shelves fast when a storm outlook goes red.
- Exchange
Main Exchange with food court, plus a Shoppette/Class Six and gas near the Tinker Gate side of the base.
- Fitness
Gerrity Fitness Center (5109 McNarney Ave, 405-734-5607) is staffed 5 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekdays with 24-hour CAC access; the 216 Fitness Annex on Arnold Street and the 3705 Fitness Center are open 24/7.
- Dining
Vanwey Dining Facility (Bldg 5905, 6120 Arnold St, 405-734-2918) serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week for DoD ID cardholders; Cafe 3001, Rosie's Cafe, and the Pin Deck Grill at the bowling center cover the rest.
- MWR
Tinker Golf Club, the bowling center, an outdoor pool, Outdoor Recreation gear rental, and ITT for Thunder and OU tickets — all listed on tinkerliving.com.
- Newcomers
Military & Family Readiness Center, 6001 Arnold St, 405-739-2747, Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Right Start briefings, relocation help, and the loan-closet for PCS arrivals.
Off duty

Bricktown and downtown OKC
Fifteen minutes west on I-40, Bricktown is the converted warehouse district with the canal, water taxis, and a strip of restaurants and bars around the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Walk over to Scissortail Park and the Myriad Botanical Gardens for the green space, and catch the Thunder at Paycom Center in season.

Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum
The 1995 bombing memorial downtown is one of the best-designed memorials in the country — the Field of Empty Chairs and the reflecting pool between the 9:01 and 9:03 gates. Give the museum two hours; it is worth every minute and it is free to walk the outdoor memorial any time.

Stockyards City
Southwest of downtown, Stockyards City is a working cattle market with Cattlemen's Steakhouse (open since 1910) at its center and western-wear shops that outfit real ranch hands. Monday and Tuesday morning auctions are open to the public and are the most Oklahoma thing you can do.

Lake Stanley Draper and Lake Thunderbird
Lake Draper sits directly south of the base — mountain-bike trails, fishing, and a boat ramp minutes from the gate. Lake Thunderbird near Norman, about 30 minutes away, adds sandy swim beaches, kayak rentals, and campsites for a cheap weekend.

Route 66 north of the city
Twenty-five minutes north in Arcadia, Pops 66 has a 66-foot soda-bottle sculpture and 700 kinds of pop, and the 1898 Round Barn sits down the road. Continue west to Chandler or east to Stroud for the classic diners and motor courts.
Official site ↗Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
About 90 minutes southwest past Lawton, the Wichitas are Oklahoma's best day of hiking — bison and longhorns on the road, Mount Scott's drive-up summit, and Elk Mountain's granite scramble. Pair it with a Meers burger on the way out.
Official site ↗OU football and Norman
Fall Saturdays in Norman are a religion; tickets through ITT sell fast. Campus Corner's restaurants and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art make it a good non-game-day trip too, 30-35 minutes down I-35.
Wikipedia ↗Insider tips
- 01Tornado season is not a figure of speech here. Download a weather app with push alerts, learn where the shelter is in your building and your lodging, and treat a 'moderate' or 'high' risk day from the Storm Prediction Center (headquartered in Norman) as a real planning factor.
- 02There is no Air Force Inn to call first. Sort your lodging before you leave home station — Midwest City hotels along Tinker Diagonal fill during big depot program reviews and Reserve UTA weekends, and a crashpad booked in advance saves the scramble.
- 03The depot's first shift means the Tinker Gate and Air Depot Boulevard are jammed 6:30-7:30 a.m.; come in through Eaker or use SE 29th Street to skip the worst of it, and confirm gate hours the night before.
- 04Summer heat is the real deal — expect 100°F afternoons in July and August. Park in the shade, keep water in the car, and plan PT at the 24/7 fitness annexes early rather than on the track at 4 p.m.
- 05Ice storms hit every couple of winters and the metro shuts down for them. If you are TDY in January or February, keep a day of groceries in your crashpad and don't count on getting on base.
- 06Oklahoma is now TRICARE West. If you PCS from an East Region base, update your region with TriWest before you need a referral or urgent care.
- 07For PCS families, get on the Balfour Beatty and MilitaryChildCare.com lists the day you have orders — CDC waits at Tinker run long, and the enlisted neighborhoods move slowly.
- 08Pack for both seasons if you are here more than a couple of weeks: a spring TDY can start at 40°F with sleet and end at 90°F. Rain gear and a windbreaker earn their space year-round on the prairie.
