The F-35 B-Course at Luke is six-plus months at the 56th Fighter Wing, and unlike UPT most students arrive on TDY orders. That makes it the single most lucrative — or expensive — lodging decision in a fighter pilot's early career. Here's how to get it right.
The orders question first
Most B-Course students are TDY-en-route to their gaining unit, which means per diem, not BAH, pays for lodging. Two things matter immediately:
- The Phoenix lodging rate is seasonal. It climbs for the winter visitor months and drops in summer. Pull your exact dates in the per diem calculator — a course that straddles the change gets two different caps.
- Long-term TDY allowance. The former automatic 75%/55% duration-based reduction was repealed in 2018. Confirm your authorized lodging allowance, government-lodging requirements and seasonal changes before booking. Other properly authorized restrictions can still apply.
Luke's on-base lodging is frequently full during B-Course cycles — that's what the non-A is for (how it works). Total the on-base alternative with the on-base calculator so you have the comparison in your pocket.
Where to live: the West Valley
Luke sits on the west side of Phoenix off Litchfield Road. The commute math is simple: stay west of the Loop 101 and you're 10–20 minutes from the gate; live in Scottsdale for the nightlife and you'll spend an hour each way on the I-10 at show time. The neighborhoods that work:
- Litchfield Park / Goodyear — closest, quiet, newer houses, the default for students who want sleep.
- Surprise / Waddell — north side, 15 minutes, lots of newer single-family rentals.
- Glendale (Arrowhead) — 20 minutes, more restaurants, the compromise pick.
- Peoria / Verrado — nice, but watch the drive at 0500.
The Luke AFB guide goes deeper on each, plus schools and healthcare for anyone bringing a family.
What a six-month house needs
- A real desk in a quiet room — sim prep and academics don't stop.
- A kitchen you'll actually use; six months of DoorDash eats the M&IE.
- Blackout curtains and good AC. It's Phoenix.
- Private parking and a place for the bike/golf clubs/whatever keeps you sane.
- Housemates on the same schedule. Classmates ideally — the chair-flying alone is worth it.
That list is our Canyon Crest spec sheet, and it's why the Luke houses fill with B-Course students back to back. Whichever crashpad you pick, ask for the nightly rate against the cap, the itemized receipt, and the extension policy in writing.
Money for the six months
With lodging reimbursed and M&IE arriving daily, a B-Course is the best cash-flow stretch of a lieutenant's career if the house has a kitchen. It's also when a lot of students buy their first home at the gaining base — use the affordability calculator with BAH at the next station and price a house in the VA loan calculator before you talk to a lender.
Send your class dates on the contact page and we'll hold rooms as orders finalize.
