Fort Huachuca Crashpad — TDY lodging that feels like home

Looking for a Fort Huachuca crashpad? The Army's Intelligence Center of Excellence sits against the Huachuca Mountains in Sierra Vista, Arizona, and its MI, UAS, and network courses keep students, instructors, and test staff on post for weeks to months. A furnished crashpad in Sierra Vista at or under the government lodging rate beats a chain hotel on Fry Boulevard once your orders stretch past a week, and Base Crashpads is expanding here now.

Mission

U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence — the Army's military intelligence schoolhouse, plus Network Enterprise Technology Command headquarters and the Army's unmanned aircraft systems training battalion.

Why stay in a crashpad near Fort Huachuca?

Fort Huachuca is a schoolhouse post at altitude. The Intelligence Center of Excellence trains the Army's intelligence force from AIT through the Captains Career Course, 2-13th Aviation trains UAS crews at Libby Army Airfield, and NETCOM, JITC, and the Electronic Proving Ground bring a steady stream of joint and civilian travelers, so a large share of the people passing through are here on orders rather than a permanent assignment. The IHG Army Hotels on post, including the Candlewood Suites, fill with long-course students, and when they issue a non-availability statement you are competing for a small inventory of Sierra Vista hotels along Fry Boulevard and Highway 90 with contractors and Border Patrol travelers. Tucson is 75 minutes away, so there is no big-city hotel market to fall back on. A crashpad gives you a full kitchen, a quiet place to study, a fixed nightly rate with a DTS-ready receipt, and a 5 to 15 minute drive to the Buffalo Soldier Gate. For PCS families waiting on a Mountain Vista Communities home on post or a rental in Sierra Vista, a furnished landing spot buys time to pick a neighborhood and school without rushing.

Fort Huachuca crashpad FAQs

Do I have to stay at the IHG Army Hotel while TDY to Fort Huachuca?
Check with IHG Army Hotels first: the on-post front desk is 520-458-9066 (main complex, Building 43083 on Winrow Avenue; the Candlewood Suites is Building 44420 at 1175 Smith Avenue), or book through ihgarmyhotels.com. If they cannot house you for your dates you receive a certificate of non-availability and can lodge off post at the FY2026 standard CONUS rate that applies to Sierra Vista and Cochise County, which is $110 lodging and $68 M&IE. Students on long courses should confirm their unit's lodging guidance at in-processing, since many AIT and some officer courses are billeted in barracks.
Which gate should I use when I arrive?
If you have a DoD ID, the Buffalo Soldier Gate at the end of Buffalo Soldier Trail and AZ-90 is the main gate and is listed as open 24/7 to vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles. Visitors and anyone needing a pass use the Van Deman Gate at the east end of Fry Boulevard, where the Visitor Control Center is open Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., closed weekends and federal holidays, 520-454-2323. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport; unescorted visitors get a background check and a 30-day badge. Gate hours change with exercises and force protection conditions, so confirm on the garrison visitor access page before you drive down.
Where do Fort Huachuca families actually live?
Most families land in Sierra Vista itself: the west side near Buffalo Soldier Trail is closest to the gate, the southeast side toward Ramsey Canyon and Canyon De Flores has newer subdivisions, and Hereford and Palominas south on AZ-92 offer acreage with a longer drive. Huachuca City and Whetstone north on AZ-90 are the budget options. On post, Mountain Vista Communities (a Michaels Military Housing partnership) runs the privatized housing with roughly 1,120 homes across 19 neighborhoods, and the Military Housing Office recommends getting on the wait list as soon as you have orders.
