Overview
Fort Huachuca is the Army's intelligence schoolhouse. The U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence and its 111th Military Intelligence Brigade train roughly 9,000 students a year, from 35-series AIT soldiers to MI BOLC lieutenants, warrant officers, and Captains Career Course students. The post also hosts Network Enterprise Technology Command headquarters, the Army's UAS training battalion at Libby Army Airfield, the Electronic Proving Ground, and DISA's Joint Interoperability Test Command, so the population is a mix of long-course students, permanent-party network and intelligence staff, joint testers, and contractors. Military OneSource lists more than 5,600 military, 8,000 civilians, and 11,000 family members tied to the installation.
The post sits at the foot of the Huachuca Mountains in Cochise County at roughly 4,600 to 5,000 feet, which makes it cooler and greener than Phoenix or Tucson. Sierra Vista, population around 45,000, wraps around the east side of the post and is the only real lodging and rental market; Tucson International is about 75 minutes northwest, and Sierra Vista Municipal Airport shares runways with Libby but has no commercial service. Summer means the July to September monsoon with afternoon lightning and flash flooding, winter brings freezing nights and clear days, and Arizona does not observe daylight saving time, which matters for the reporting time on your orders.
Weather
Sierra Vista is high desert with a real climate swing: July highs run around 91 degrees with monsoon thunderstorms most afternoons, while January highs are near 61 with overnight lows in the mid 30s. The monsoon from July through September delivers about half the annual rainfall, with flash flooding in washes and lightning that shuts down outdoor training and ranges. Spring and fall are dry, sunny, and pleasant, and the elevation keeps summer nights far cooler than Tucson.
Best months
October through April for dry, mild days and cold clear nights; March and April and again October are ideal
Tough months
July through September for monsoon lightning, flash floods, and humid afternoons; December and January nights drop below freezing
Getting there
- Fly into Tucson International (TUS), then drive about 70 miles: I-10 east to exit 302, then AZ-90 south through Whetstone and Huachuca City into Sierra Vista, roughly 75 minutes. Phoenix Sky Harbor is about 3 hours and sometimes cheaper.
- There is no post shuttle. Huachuca Taxi and Shuttle (520-439-0439) runs 24/7 airport transfers; Military OneSource lists the Tucson airport run at $98 per person by day and $119 after hours, so confirm the current fare and whether your unit will reimburse it. A rental car is the practical answer for a course longer than a week.
- Buffalo Soldier Gate (main gate, at the end of Buffalo Soldier Trail and AZ-90) is listed as open 24/7 to vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles for DoD ID holders. The West Gate off AZ-90 on the north side of post is open 24/7 to vehicles and bicycles only.
- Van Deman Gate at the east end of Fry Boulevard houses the Visitor Control Center, open Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and closed weekends and holidays, 520-454-2323. When the VCC is closed, the Buffalo Soldier Gate can issue limited passes. Visitors need a REAL ID-compliant ID; background-checked visitors get a 30-day badge and Cochise County residents can get a one-year badge.
- Traffic is light by any standard; Fry Boulevard through Sierra Vista is the only choke point at the morning and afternoon gate rush. Expect Border Patrol checkpoints on AZ-90 and AZ-80 and keep your ID handy.
- Vista Transit, the city bus, runs Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is currently fare-free, but it does not enter the post, so plan on driving or biking through the gate.

- Rooms include hot breakfast, high-speed internet, guest laundry, a fitness center, and pet-friendly rooms for a fee.
- Long courses keep the hotels full, so book the day your orders are cut and ask for a certificate of non-availability if they cannot cover your dates; confirm front desk hours and the current non-availability process with the hotel, since they change.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
A furnished crashpad at or under $110 a night fits Fort Huachuca's typical TDY of weeks to months better than a hotel room with a mini fridge: you get a kitchen, a desk to study for the next exam, and a short drive to the Buffalo Soldier Gate. Base Crashpads does not have a listed property at Fort Huachuca yet, but we are expanding into Sierra Vista now, so if you own a home or a room near the post, or you are a traveler who needs one, reach out and we will connect you.
Fort Huachuca crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- On-post family housing is privatized under Mountain Vista Communities, a partnership between the Army and Michaels Military Housing, with about 1,120 homes across 19 neighborhoods of duplexes and single-family houses and a multi-year plan of new builds and renovations; contact the Military Housing Office as soon as you have orders to get on the wait list, and expect a wait for the most popular junior enlisted and NCO homes.
- Off post, Sierra Vista is the market: a modest supply of single-family rentals, a handful of apartment complexes, and a rental price point that is well under BAH for most grades, with median three-bedroom rents reported around $1,100 to $1,150.
- Inventory is thin, so give yourself a few weeks and watch listings from the housing office and local property managers rather than the national sites alone.
- Huachuca City, Whetstone, and Hereford add rural and acreage options at a longer drive.
BAH 2026
- Fort Huachuca falls in Military Housing Area AZ014.
- 2026 rates from the Fort Huachuca housing site show E-5 at $1,719 with dependents and $1,347 without, and O-3 at $2,232 with dependents and $2,019 without, an increase of about 8.5 percent from 2025 and effective January 1, 2026.
- Confirm your grade and dependency status on the DTMO BAH calculator before signing a lease.
West Sierra Vista
Established neighborhoods between Buffalo Soldier Trail and Fry Boulevard, older homes, closest to the commissary and gate
Southeast Sierra Vista and Canyon De Flores
Newer subdivisions and larger lots toward Ramsey Canyon Road, mountain views, quiet
Huachuca City and Whetstone
Small towns north on AZ-90, budget rentals and mobile homes, closest to I-10 for the Tucson run
Hereford and Palominas
Rural acreage and horse property along AZ-92 toward Coronado National Memorial, dark skies
Schools & childcare
- On post, the Fort Huachuca Accommodation School District (FHASD) runs three schools for on-post families: Colonel Johnston Elementary (K-2), General Myer Elementary (3-5), and Colonel Smith Middle School (6-8), with test scores well above the Arizona average.
- On-post high schoolers and off-post families attend Sierra Vista Unified School District 68, with Buena High School as the district's single high school; confirm your zoned campus with the district when you have an address.
- Child and Youth Services on post runs the child development center, school-age care, and youth programs; register through Parent Central Services before arrival, since CDC spots have a wait list.
- Cochise College has a Sierra Vista campus, and the University of Arizona operates a Sierra Vista location, useful for spouses finishing degrees and for tuition-assistance courses during a long TDY.
- The School Liaison Officer at the Soldier and Family Readiness Center (520-533-2330) is the first call for records transfer, special-needs enrollment, and the Purple Star school programs.
Healthcare
- Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center at 2240 E. Winrow Avenue is the on-post clinic: primary care, pharmacy, and specialty clinics, open weekdays 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with weekend and holiday clinic hours; the appointment line is 520-533-9200 (6 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.).
- Raymond W. Bliss has no emergency room. For emergencies go to Canyon Vista Medical Center in Sierra Vista, the county's main hospital; the nearest Level I trauma center is Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, about 75 minutes away.
- Fort Huachuca is in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest; TDY travelers on Prime should use the clinic or the TRICARE nurse advice line for urgent care and keep receipts for any civilian visit.
- The clinic pharmacy fills prescriptions for active duty and enrolled beneficiaries; Sierra Vista has retail pharmacies at Walgreens, Walmart, and Fry's for network refills.
- Behavioral health, dental, and physical therapy are on post; students should in-process with the clinic early because slots go quickly at the start of each course cycle.
On base
- Commissary & Exchange
- Commissary at 2170 Arizona Street, Building 61610, open daily with CLICK2GO online ordering; the Main Exchange, food court, and Military Clothing are nearby in the central post area.
- Sierra Vista has a Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, and Fry's for anything else.
- Fitness
Barnes Field House at Hatfield and Arizona Streets across from the commissary has weight and cardio rooms, racquetball and basketball courts, a heated indoor pool, and a 400-meter track; Eifler Fitness Center in Prosser Village is the smaller option near the training area.
- Outdoor recreation
MWR Outdoor Recreation rents camping and paddling gear; the Sportsman's Center on Garden Canyon Road runs skeet, trap, pistol, and rifle ranges; Mountain View Golf Course is an 18-hole course open to the public at the base of the Huachucas.
- Dining
Weinstein Dining Facility on Hunt Road serves students and permanent party; the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre has a restaurant and catering; off post, Fry Boulevard is the restaurant strip with everything from Mexican and Korean to national chains.
- Legal & finance
The Fort Huachuca Legal Assistance Office handles wills, powers of attorney, and leases; Army Community Service and the Soldier and Family Readiness Center (520-533-2330) offer financial counseling and relocation assistance; Armed Forces Bank and the Exchange have ATMs on post.
- Chapel & pets
The Main Post Chapel runs Catholic and Protestant services and religious education; the on-post veterinary treatment facility handles routine care and health certificates, and IHG Army Hotels rooms are pet-friendly for a fee.
Off duty

Coronado National Memorial
Twenty miles south of Sierra Vista at the end of AZ-92, this National Park Service site marks the route of the 1540 Coronado expedition. Drive or hike to Montezuma Pass for a view straight into Mexico, walk the Coronado Cave, and note that the southern terminus of the 800-mile Arizona Trail starts here. Free admission; the visitor center is open daily.

Ramsey Canyon Preserve
The Nature Conservancy's canyon preserve south of Sierra Vista is one of the best hummingbird-watching sites in North America, with up to 15 species passing through from spring to early fall. It is a shaded, easy walk along a creek and one of the few places to cool off in July. Check hours and parking limits before you go.

Kartchner Caverns State Park
About 30 minutes north on AZ-90 near Benson, Kartchner is a living limestone cave with two guided tours, an interpretive center, and campground. Tours sell out on weekends, so reserve ahead through Arizona State Parks; the cave stays 70 degrees year-round, which is a relief in summer.

Tombstone
The Town Too Tough to Die is 30 minutes east on AZ-82 and AZ-80. Watch the O.K. Corral gunfight reenactment, tour the Bird Cage Theatre and Boothill Graveyard, and walk Allen Street. It is touristy but worth an afternoon, and Helldorado Days in October is the big weekend.

Bisbee
The old copper-mining town 45 minutes southeast on AZ-80 is now a hillside of galleries, bars, and historic hotels. Take the Queen Mine Tour underground, climb the staircases through Old Bisbee, and grab a beer on Brewery Gulch. It is the best day trip in the county.
Official site ↗San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area
Ten minutes east of Sierra Vista on AZ-90, the BLM's San Pedro corridor is a cottonwood-lined river in the desert that draws hundreds of bird species. Start at the San Pedro House for easy trails, and go early in the morning during migration season.
Official site ↗Fort Huachuca Museum and Old Post
The post museum on Grierson Avenue in the historic Old Post tells the story of the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers and the fort's role since 1877, with a Military Intelligence museum annex nearby. Free, open Tuesday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; non-DoD visitors need a pass from the Visitor Control Center.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year; from March to November that matches Pacific time, so double-check the reporting time on your orders and the time on your phone.
- 02The Visitor Control Center at Van Deman Gate is closed weekends and holidays; if you arrive without a DoD ID on a Saturday, plan on the Buffalo Soldier Gate limited pass or a sponsor.
- 03Book IHG Army Hotels the day your orders are cut; long courses keep the Candlewood Suites full, and the non-availability certificate is what lets you lodge off post.
- 04Monsoon rules: do not drive through flooded washes, and expect ranges and outdoor training to pause for lightning most July and August afternoons.
- 05The post is at 4,600 feet and higher; hydrate, ease into the first PT sessions, and bring a jacket even in summer because nights drop fast.
- 06Border Patrol checkpoints on AZ-90 and AZ-80 are routine; keep your ID and rental agreement within reach.
- 07Tucson is the closest airport and big-box run; stock the crashpad kitchen on the way down on AZ-90 and I-10 rather than driving back for it later.
- 08Sierra Vista calls itself the hummingbird capital of the United States; Ramsey Canyon and the San Pedro River are free stress relief between exams.
