Fort Meade Crashpad — TDY lodging that feels like home

Looking for a Fort Meade crashpad? Fort George G. Meade sits between Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and its NSA, U.S. Cyber Command, DISA, and DINFOS missions keep students, staff, and cleared contractors of every branch on post for weeks to months at a time. A furnished crashpad in Odenton, Severn, Hanover, Laurel, or Columbia at or under the government lodging rate beats a chain hotel along Route 175 when your orders run longer than a week.

Mission

U.S. Army Garrison Fort George G. Meade — the nation's center for information, intelligence, and cyber operations, home to the National Security Agency, U.S. Cyber Command, and DISA.

Host units

National Security Agency / Central Security Service (NSA/CSS) and U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) — the headquarters that define the post and pull in a constant flow of joint, civilian, and contractor personnel · Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) — headquarters for the department's global IT and communications backbone · Defense Media Activity and the Defense Information School (DINFOS) — the joint schoolhouse for public affairs, broadcast, and visual information specialists of every branch · 780th Military Intelligence Brigade (Cyber), the Air Force 70th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing, and Navy and Marine Corps cyber and cryptologic commands — the service components that feed the NSA and USCYBERCOM missions

Commute

From Odenton and Severn it is about 10 to 15 minutes to the Reece Road or Mapes/175 gates via MD-175 (Annapolis Road) or MD-32; from Hanover, Laurel, and Columbia plan on 15 to 25 minutes using MD-295 (the Baltimore-Washington Parkway) or MD-32 to Route 175; from Crofton and Annapolis it is roughly 20 to 35 minutes up MD-3 or US-50 to MD-32.

Why stay in a crashpad near Fort Meade?

Fort Meade is one of the largest joint-service and civilian workforces in the Department of Defense: more than 18,000 military personnel, roughly 41,000 civilian employees, and well over 100 tenant agencies focused on intelligence, information, and cyber operations. Very few of the people passing through are here for a traditional field-training rotation; they come for DINFOS courses, cyber and cryptologic qualification training, conferences, and staff work at three major headquarters, which means the TDY population is steady all year rather than tied to a class calendar. The single IHG Army Hotel on post fills quickly, and off post you are competing with BWI business travelers and one of the densest defense-contractor markets in the country for rooms in Hanover, Columbia, and Laurel. A crashpad gives you a full kitchen, a quiet place to work after a day in a SCIF, a fixed nightly rate with a DTS-ready receipt, and a 10 to 25 minute drive to the Reece Road or Mapes Road gates. For PCS families waiting on a Corvias home on post or a rental in Odenton or Crofton, a furnished landing spot buys time to sort out schools and the commute without rushing a lease.

Fort Meade crashpad FAQs

Do I have to stay at the IHG Army Hotel while TDY to Fort Meade?
Check IHG Army Hotels first: the on-post property is the Candlewood Suites in Building 4690 at 4690 Cooper Avenue, front desk 410-674-7700, with central reservations through 1-877-711-8326 or ihgarmyhotels.com. If they cannot house you for your dates you receive a certificate of non-availability and can lodge off post at the FY2026 Annapolis / Anne Arundel County rate, which is $161 in October and May through September and $125 from November through April, with M&IE of $80. Confirm your unit's lodging guidance, since some DINFOS and service-component courses are billeted in barracks or dorms.
Which gate should I use when I arrive?
The Reece Road Gate on the west side of post near Annapolis Road (MD-175) is the 24/7 access point and has the visitor lane; the Demps Visitor Control Center sits next to it and is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., closed weekends, 301-677-1064. The Mapes/32 and Rockenbach Road gates are open weekdays 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. only, and the Mapes/175 gate is inbound only 6 to 9 a.m. and outbound only 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Bring a physical REAL ID-compliant license or passport; digital IDs on a phone are not accepted, and unescorted visitors need a background check.
Where do Fort Meade families actually live?
Odenton is the closest bedroom community, with newer townhome and apartment communities along MD-175 and a MARC station for the D.C. commute. Severn and Hanover sit just north near Arundel Mills, Crofton is the established family suburb to the south with strong schools, and Columbia and Laurel in Howard County draw people who want more house for the money or a spouse commuting toward D.C. On post, Corvias runs the privatized housing and the wait list opens once you have orders; wait times vary by floor plan, so call the Leasing and Relocation Center early.
