Overview
Fort George G. Meade is the intelligence and cyber capital of the Department of Defense. The post hosts the National Security Agency and Central Security Service, U.S. Cyber Command, the Defense Information Systems Agency, and Defense Media Activity with its Defense Information School, along with the Army's 780th Military Intelligence Brigade, the Air Force 70th ISR Wing, and Navy and Marine Corps cyber and cryptologic commands. More than 18,000 service members and about 41,000 civilian employees work here across well over 100 tenant agencies, and because so much of the mission is headquarters and schoolhouse work, the people cycling through are DINFOS students, cyber and SIGINT trainees, staff officers on conference TDY, Guard and Reserve rotations, and a deep bench of cleared contractors.
The post sits in western Anne Arundel County, Maryland, wedged between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and I-95, about 15 to 20 minutes from BWI, 25 minutes from Baltimore, and 45 minutes or more from Washington depending on traffic. Summers are hot and humid, winters are cold with a few real snow days, and the Parkway and Route 175 back up hard at rush hour. For a TDY traveler the things that matter are which gate is open when you land, whether the Candlewood Suites has a room, and whether you base yourself in Odenton, Hanover, Columbia, or Laurel, because that choice sets your commute and how much of the $161 or $125 lodging rate you keep.
Weather
Fort Meade has a humid subtropical climate moderated slightly by the Chesapeake. July highs average in the upper 80s with muggy afternoons and frequent thunderstorms, and January lows average in the mid 20s. The area gets roughly 43 inches of rain spread evenly through the year and around 16 to 20 inches of snow, usually in a few storms between January and March that can close the post for a day.
Best months
Late April through early June and September through October, with warm days, lower humidity, and the Chesapeake at its best
Tough months
July and August for heat and humidity, and January through February for ice, snow days, and the Parkway at a crawl
Getting there
- Fly into BWI, about 10 miles and 15 to 20 minutes from post. Take I-195 west to MD-295 (the Baltimore-Washington Parkway) south, exit at MD-175 (Annapolis Road) east, and the Reece Road Gate is on your right. Reagan National (DCA) and Dulles (IAD) are 45 to 75 minutes away and rarely worth it unless fares are far better.
- Driving in from the north or south, MD-295 and I-95 both run past the post; MD-32 connects them and feeds the Mapes/32 gate on the west side. From Annapolis, US-50 or MD-3 to MD-32 west is the usual route.
- The Reece Road Gate is open 24 hours every day and is the only round-the-clock entrance; it has a visitor lane for use when the Visitor Control Center is closed. The Mapes/32 and Rockenbach Road gates are open Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed weekends. The Mapes/175 gate is inbound and outbound 6 to 9 a.m. and outbound only 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays, closed weekends. Confirm on the garrison's installation access page before you drive, since hours change.
- The Demps Visitor Control Center next to the Reece Road Gate is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., closed weekends and federal holidays, 301-677-1064 or 1065. Visitors without a DoD ID need a physical REAL ID-compliant license or passport plus a second ID with a matching name; digital licenses on a phone are not accepted. Stays over 90 days need a sponsor to file the long-term access form in advance.
- Rush hour is real: MD-295 southbound toward D.C. and Route 175 through Odenton both jam from about 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. If your course starts at 7:30, leave earlier than the map says.
- The MARC Penn Line stops at Odenton, five minutes from the Reece Road Gate, and runs to Baltimore Penn Station and Washington Union Station on weekdays. Post shuttle service is limited, so plan on a car or a rideshare for daily movement.

- On-post lodging is IHG Army Hotels' Candlewood Suites, Building 4690 at 4690 Cooper Avenue, Fort Meade, MD 20755, front desk 410-674-7700 and staffed around the clock.
- Reservations run through IHG Army Hotels central reservations at 1-877-711-8326 or ihgarmyhotels.com, and official travelers get priority over leisure guests.
- Rooms are extended-stay style with kitchenettes and the property accepts pets for a fee, which matters for PCS families.
- Demand from DINFOS classes, conference TDY, and inbound PCS families keeps it full much of the year, so book as soon as orders are cut; if no room is available for your dates you receive a certificate of non-availability that authorizes off-post lodging at the locality rate.
- Confirm current policies and rates with the front desk, since the property, not the garrison, manages the reservation window.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
Fort Meade TDYs skew long and workday-heavy: DINFOS courses, cyber qualification training, and staff details that stretch past a month, with evenings you would rather spend cooking and studying than in a hotel lobby. A furnished crashpad in Odenton, Severn, Hanover, or Laurel at or below the $125 to $161 rate gives you a kitchen, a desk, and parking without a resort fee. Base Crashpads does not have a listed property at Fort Meade yet; we are expanding into the Baltimore-Washington corridor, so if you own a place nearby or need one for upcoming orders, send us an inquiry and we will connect you.
Fort Meade crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Corvias operates the privatized family housing on post, with neighborhoods ranging from older duplexes to newer homes near the Meade Heights and Potomac Place areas.
- You can join the wait list as soon as you have orders to Fort Meade or another duty station within 50 miles; wait times vary by floor plan and rank band, and the Leasing and Relocation Center on post is the authority on current numbers.
- Off post, the rental market is priced for a two-headquarters defense economy: newer townhomes and apartments in Odenton and Hanover rent near the top of what BAH covers, Severn and Glen Burnie are a notch cheaper, and Laurel, Columbia, and Crofton trade a longer drive for more space or better-known schools.
- Unaccompanied service members and single TDY travelers often share townhomes near Arundel Mills or Piney Orchard to keep costs down.
BAH 2026 · MHA MD133
- Fort Meade is in the Fort G.
- G.
- Meade Military Housing Area, MHA MD133.
- For 2026, an E-5 draws $2,901 with dependents and $2,436 without; an O-3 draws $3,411 with dependents and $3,138 without, per rates effective January 1, 2026 published by two independent base housing sites.
- Confirm your own rate on the DTMO BAH calculator before signing a lease, since MHA boundaries and grandfathered rates can change the figure.
Odenton
The post's front porch: newer townhome and apartment communities along MD-175 and around Piney Orchard, chain dining, a Wegmans nearby, and the MARC station for commuters
Severn and Hanover
Closest to BWI and Arundel Mills with mixed older subdivisions and new build; heavy contractor and airline-crew population, easy access to MD-295 and I-97
Columbia and Laurel
Howard County planned community and the Route 1 corridor: more house for the money, Merriweather Post Pavilion, strong schools, and the favored choice when a spouse works toward D.C.
Crofton and Annapolis
Established family suburbs and the state capital on the water: Crofton has tree-lined neighborhoods and good schools, Annapolis has the waterfront and Naval Academy life at a premium
Schools & childcare
- Fort Meade's on-post schools are run by Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS): West Meade Early Education Center, Pershing Hill, Meade Heights, and Manor View elementary schools, MacArthur and Meade middle schools, and Meade Senior High School at 1100 Clark Road. Register through AACPS with your housing address and orders.
- Families off post in Odenton, Severn, and Crofton also fall under AACPS; Columbia and Laurel are in the Howard County Public School System, which many families choose deliberately for its ratings.
- Child, Youth and School Services runs child development centers and school-age programs on post through Fort Meade MWR; waitlists run long for infant and toddler care, so register on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders.
- The garrison School Liaison Officer, reachable through the Fort Meade schools page on home.army.mil/meade, helps with transfers, IEP handoffs, and the Interstate Compact for military children.
- Several colleges maintain offices on post for evening and online programs, and the Education Center handles tuition assistance and testing.
Healthcare
- Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center at 2480 Llewellyn Avenue is the on-post military treatment facility, with primary care, a range of specialty clinics, dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy; appointment line 301-677-8800. It has no emergency room, so call 911 for anything urgent.
- The Kimbrough pharmacy is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with an automated pickup kiosk that runs later and on weekends; the refill line is 800-248-6337.
- Fort Meade is in the TRICARE East region administered by Humana Military and sits inside the National Capital Region enhanced multi-service market, which lets Kimbrough refer you to Walter Reed and other regional MTFs.
- The closest civilian emergency departments are UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, and Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis; the state's Level I trauma center is the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in downtown Baltimore.
- Urgent care clinics are plentiful along Route 175 in Odenton and around Arundel Mills; TRICARE Prime enrollees should use the nurse advice line first to avoid a point-of-service charge.
On base

Main Post Chapel and Argonne Hills Chapel Center host Catholic, Protestant, and other services; the on-post Veterinary Treatment Facility handles vaccines and health certificates, and Candlewood Suites accepts pets for a fee
Off duty

National Cryptologic Museum
NSA's public museum sits just outside the post at 8290 Colony Seven Road in Annapolis Junction, with Enigma machines you can touch, Cold War SIGINT gear, and the story of the agency next door. It is free, open Tuesday through Friday, and the easiest way to explain to family what half the post actually does.

Annapolis and the Naval Academy
Thirty minutes south, the state capital delivers colonial brick streets, City Dock, crab houses on the water, and the U.S. Naval Academy Yard, where the museum and noon formation are open to visitors with ID. Go on a weekday to avoid the boat-show crowds.

Official site ↗Merriweather Post Pavilion and downtown Columbia
Columbia's outdoor amphitheater books national touring acts from spring through fall, and the surrounding Merriweather District has restaurants, a lakefront, and summer festivals. Lawn tickets are the cheap way in; bring a blanket.
Official site ↗Washington, D.C. by MARC
Board the MARC Penn Line at Odenton and you are at Union Station in about 40 minutes, steps from the Capitol and a short Metro ride from the Smithsonian museums, all free. It beats fighting the Parkway and paying downtown parking on a weekend.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Reece Road is the only 24/7 gate; if you land at BWI late, ignore the map's shortcut to Mapes/175 and go straight to Reece Road.
- 02Bring a physical REAL ID or passport for the Visitor Control Center; digital licenses on your phone are turned away, and the VCC closes from noon to 1 p.m. every day.
- 03Book the Candlewood Suites the day orders drop and get the non-availability certificate in writing before you book off post; the property fills with DINFOS classes and conferences all year.
- 04If your work is at NSA or USCYBERCOM, you enter through their own access points off MD-32, not the garrison gates; ask your sponsor which lot you are badged for and where to park.
- 05Off-post hotels and rentals in Hanover and Columbia carry the Howard County or BWI price bump; Odenton and Severn keep you under the $125 winter rate more easily.
- 06The Parkway is a no-truck road with speed cameras and rolling backups near the MD-32 and MD-175 interchanges; add 20 minutes to any D.C. trip after 3 p.m.
- 07Grab a MARC monthly pass at Odenton if you are TDY to a Pentagon or Fort Belvoir meeting; parking at the station is free and the train beats I-95 every time.
- 08Snow days are real in January and February; the garrison posts closures on its Facebook page and the My Army Post app, so check before you drive in.
