Overview

Joint Base Andrews is where Air Force One lives. The 89th Airlift Wing flies the president, vice president, cabinet, and combatant commanders worldwide in the VC-25A, C-32A, C-37, and C-40B, with an operational force of more than 1,000 people. The 316th Wing hosts the base, the 1st Helicopter Squadron flies UH-1Ns for the National Capital Region, the 113th Wing keeps F-16s on alert for air sovereignty, the 459th Air Refueling Wing flies KC-135Rs, and Naval Air Facility Washington adds a Navy Reserve flight line. Add Air Force District of Washington, the 79th Medical Wing, the Air National Guard Readiness Center, and the 844th Communications Group, and you get a combined force of roughly 25,000 across more than 60 partner units, with Pentagon staff, Guard and Reserve members on orders, and aircrew cycling through year-round.

The base sits in Camp Springs, Prince George's County, Maryland, just outside the Capital Beltway about 10 miles southeast of downtown Washington. Summers are hot and sticky, winters are gray with the occasional ice storm that shuts the region down, and traffic is the defining fact of life: the Beltway, Suitland Parkway, and Branch Avenue all back up on a normal weekday. For a TDY traveler that means a car, a realistic commute plan, and lodging that fits inside one of the country's highest per diem rates.

Weather

July highs average right around 90°F with heavy humidity and afternoon thunderstorms; January lows average in the upper 20s. Washington sees roughly 14 inches of snow a year, but even a few inches or a glaze of ice can close schools and snarl the Beltway.

Best months

April-May and September-October

Tough months

July-August for heat and humidity (and the peak lodging crunch on base); January-February for ice storms and the region's slow snow response

Getting there

  • Fly into DCA (Reagan National) for the shortest drive, about 25 minutes via I-295 or the Beltway to Exit 9 (Allentown Road). BWI is about 45 minutes up the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and often cheaper; Dulles (IAD) is an hour or more across the Beltway and worth avoiding. Reserve a rental car; there is no practical way to do Andrews without one.
  • The Main Gate on Allentown Road, just off I-495 Exit 9, is open 24/7 and is the one to use if you arrive late. The Virginia (South) Gate on the Clinton side runs 0500-2100 daily, and the Pearl Harbor/Commercial (East) Gate handles commercial vehicles 0500-1600 inbound with the outbound lane closing at 2100. The North Gate has been closed until further notice. Confirm current hours on jba.af.mil or the base's social media before you drive.
  • The Visitor Control Center sits just outside the Main Gate (301-981-0689 per MilitaryOneSource). Anyone without a DoD ID or a sponsor on the access list is vetted there, so bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Weekday hours are the widest and Sunday hours are limited or closed; confirm on the JBA Visitor Control Center page.
  • Traffic is the real gate. The Beltway between the Wilson Bridge and I-95 and Suitland Parkway into the District jam from about 0630-0930 and 1530-1900. If you are working at the Pentagon or in D.C., leave before 0630 or plan on 45 minutes or more. When Air Force One moves, expect brief road holds on base near the flight line.

The crashpad option

Base Crashpads has two homes serving JB Andrews on the D.C. side: Dupont Landing, a 3-bedroom, 3-bath, 1,800-square-foot house, and Andrews Gateway, a 2-bedroom, 1-bath home, both within a short drive of the Main Gate. Both are furnished with full kitchens, laundry, and parking, priced inside the D.C. per diem lodging rate (as low as the $183 summer rate and well under the $276 spring rate) with DTS-ready receipts. Send us your dates and we will hold a room.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Family housing is privatized under Liberty Park at Andrews (Liberty Military Housing), 2097 San Antonio Blvd on base, (301) 736-8085 or (866) 944-7504; the government Housing Management Office is (301) 981-5518 and should be your first call on receipt of orders.
  • Off base, 2026 listings put three-bedroom homes around $2,400-$3,050 a month in Waldorf and a Bowie median rent near $2,440, with Prince George's County generally cheaper than Alexandria and the Virginia side.
  • Buying is common for anyone on a three-year-plus tour, since DC053 BAH is among the highest of any joint base.

BAH 2026 · MHA DC053

  • JB Andrews is in MHA DC053 (Washington, D.C.).
  • Per published 2026 tables, an E-5 draws approximately $3,132 with dependents and $2,832 without; an O-3 draws approximately $4,020 with dependents and $3,531 without.
  • Rates rose about 8 percent over 2025.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
NeighborhoodCommute

Camp Springs / Clinton

The closest bedroom communities, with 1960s-80s brick ramblers and split-levels, Branch Avenue Metro at the top end, and prices that stay below the Virginia side; schools are hit or miss, so check the specific zoned school with the SLO.

Commute: ~10 min

Fort Washington

Quiet, wooded, and river-adjacent along the Potomac with larger lots and Fort Washington Park at the end of the road; a 15-minute drive on Allentown or Old Fort roads but a slower crawl if you also need the Wilson Bridge.

Commute: ~15 min

Upper Marlboro / Westphalia

Newer townhome and single-family construction east of the base along MD-4 and Westphalia Road, popular with families for the space and newer schools, with a straightforward run down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Beltway.

Commute: ~20 min

Bowie

Prince George's County's most-requested family address for its schools, parks, and 1960s Levitt colonials with newer subdivisions, but it sits north of the base so the commute rides the Beltway or MD-4 and stretches in rush hour.

Commute: ~30 min

Alexandria / Kingstowne, Virginia

Historic Old Town and the Kingstowne townhome belt draw officers who also work at the Pentagon or Fort Belvoir; expect higher rents and a Wilson Bridge crossing that turns a 25-minute drive into 45 on a bad morning.

Commute: ~25-45 min

Schools & childcare

  • One on-base school: Imagine Andrews Public Charter School (K-8, 4701 San Antonio Blvd, 301-350-6002), a Prince George's County public charter with roughly 400 students and a lottery that gives priority to base residents. Base housing is otherwise zoned to Prince George's County Public Schools; confirm your exact zoned schools with the SLO before signing a lease.
  • Prince George's County Public Schools is one of the largest districts in the country, with specialty and magnet programs (language immersion, STEM, and TAG centers) that require applications on set winter deadlines. Families in Charles County (Waldorf) and Anne Arundel County (Bowie's northern edge) use those districts instead. Ask the SLO about Maryland's Purple Star designations in the area.
  • School Liaison Office: (301) 981-9211 or cell (202) 716-0481, co-located with the Military & Family Readiness Center at 1191 Menoher Drive. Call early for charter, magnet, and special-education transfers.
  • Childcare: CDC 2 (301-981-3323) and CDC 3 (240-857-3207) carry the load while CDC 1 is temporarily closed, so waits can be long. Register on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders, and ask about Family Child Care homes on base as a bridge.
06

Healthcare

  • Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center, 1060 West Perimeter Road, is an outpatient clinic and ambulatory surgery center run by the 316th Medical Group under the 79th Medical Wing, not an inpatient hospital. Clinics run Monday-Friday 0730-1630, and the Emergent Care Center is open daily 0700-1900 (limited services on federal holidays, family days, and the second Thursday of each month). Appointments go through the MHS GENESIS patient portal or the appointment call center at 888-999-1212.
  • There is no 24-hour emergency room on base. After 1900, or for anything life-threatening, call 911; the closest civilian ER is MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, about 10 minutes from the Main Gate, with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda as the region's military hospital about an hour away in traffic.
  • TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military. Andrews is part of the National Capital Region Market, so referrals often route to Walter Reed or Fort Belvoir Community Hospital.

Insider tips

  1. 01Summer humidity is the hazard here. July and August highs sit near 90 with dew points to match, and afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast; keep PT before 0700 and a rain shell in the car.
  2. 02A dusting of snow closes this region. Watch the OPM and JBA operating status the night before, because a two-hour delay or liberal leave decision often comes at 0400.
  3. 03Use the 24/7 Main Gate off I-495 Exit 9 for late arrivals; the Virginia Gate closes at 2100 and the North Gate has been shut for a while. Do not trust old GPS routing to closed gates.
  4. 04Book the Presidential Inn the day your orders drop, especially for June-August travel, and get the non-availability number in writing before you reserve anything commercial.
  5. 05The D.C. per diem is seasonal: $196 from November through March but $276 in April-June. If you can nudge your dates, it changes what you can afford.
  6. 06Expect road holds on base when Air Force One or a DV mission moves. Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to reach the flight line side if you have a report time.
  7. 07Branch Avenue Metro (Green Line) is a few miles from the gate and the cheapest way into the District for a day off; the parking garage fills by 0730 on weekdays.
  8. 08PCS families: put your name on the Liberty Park waitlist and MilitaryChildCare.com immediately, and call the SLO before you sign a lease so you know the actual zoned school, not the one the listing claims.

Base Crashpads provides an itemized, DTS-ready receipt for each stay.
Which gate should I use and when?
The Main Gate on Allentown Road at I-495 Exit 9 is open 24/7 and sits next to the Visitor Control Center. The Virginia Gate on the Clinton side is open 0500-2100 and the Pearl Harbor Gate handles commercial traffic 0500-1600. Confirm hours on jba.af.mil before you drive.
Is there a hospital on JB Andrews?
No. Malcolm Grow is an outpatient clinic and surgery center with an Emergent Care Center open daily 0700-1900. For a true emergency call 911; the nearest civilian ER is MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, and Walter Reed in Bethesda is the region's military hospital.
