Overview
Naval Air Station Patuxent River, universally called Pax River, is the Navy's flight-test capital. It is home to Naval Air Systems Command headquarters, the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and the Test Wing Atlantic squadrons VX-20, VX-23 and HX-21, plus operational test squadron VX-1. The station logs more than 165,000 air operations a year with about 140 different aircraft types, and the people doing the work are roughly 2,400 active-duty sailors and Marines, 9,800 civilian employees and 5,700 contractors. The 14,500-acre complex also includes Webster Outlying Field in St. Inigoes, Navy Recreation Center Solomons and the Bloodsworth Island range in the bay.
The base sits at the bottom of the St. Mary's County peninsula, where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay, about 65 miles from Washington and closer to 90 minutes to two hours from BWI, DCA or Dulles in real traffic. Lexington Park is the base town, California and Hollywood are the suburbs up Route 235, Leonardtown is the county seat and Solomons is the waterfront getaway across the bridge in Calvert County. Summers are hot and humid, winters are damp and raw with occasional snow, and the water is the point of living here: a TDY traveler who brings a fishing rod or a kayak will not run out of things to do.
Weather
Pax River has a humid subtropical Chesapeake climate. July averages a high of about 86 F and a low near 70 F with heavy humidity and afternoon thunderstorms; January averages a high around 44 F and a low near 28 F. Annual precipitation is roughly 44 to 47 inches spread evenly through the year, with about a foot of snow in a typical winter.
Best months
Late April through June and September through October
Tough months
July and August for heat, humidity and mosquitoes; January and February for raw wind off the water and occasional ice or snow that closes roads and delays gate traffic
Getting there
- Fly into BWI, DCA or Dulles; all three are 65 to 90 road miles away and the Navy Lodge quotes about two hours to each. There is no commercial service at St. Mary's County Regional Airport, so plan on a rental car.
- From the Washington Beltway take Route 5 south through Waldorf, then Route 235 (Three Notch Road) south to Lexington Park. Route 235 is the main commercial strip and every gate is off it.
- Gate 1 at Route 235 and Pegg Road is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is the gate to use at night or on weekends.
- Gate 2 at Route 235 and Great Mills Road (Route 246) is open weekdays roughly 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and closed weekends. Gate 3 is reported open daily 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; confirm current hours on the base access page or with the Pass and ID office at 301-342-3231.
- The Pass and ID / Visitor Control Center is at Gate 2 and has limited hours (weekday mornings, shorter on Fridays). Contractors and visitors without a CAC or DoD ID need a sponsor and should arrive early; the base access FAQ on the NAS Patuxent River site explains the paperwork.
- Traffic stacks up on Route 235 at both gates from about 6:30 to 8:00 a.m. and again 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. as the civilian workforce shifts; the Thomas Johnson Bridge from Solomons is a single choke point and backs up in the same windows.

Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
Pax River TDYs skew long: a Test Pilot School class, a program review cycle or a flight-test detachment can put you here for 30 to 90 days, and a furnished crashpad with a kitchen and washer near Route 235 beats a hotel for that. Base Crashpads does not yet have a listed property at NAS Patuxent River, but we are expanding into St. Mary's County; if you are a traveler who needs one or a homeowner who wants to host, reach out and we will connect you.
NAS Patuxent River crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- On-base family housing is privatized under Liberty Military Housing (formerly Lincoln Military Housing), with about 749 single-family homes in six neighborhoods including Carpenter Park, Challenger Estates, Columbia Colony, Glenn Forest, Gold Coast and Lovell Cove.
- The Navy Housing Service Center at 21967 Cuddihy Road, Building 2371 (301-342-3846) runs the wait list and can refer you off base.
- The off-base market is driven by the civilian and contractor workforce more than by sailors, so it looks like a mid-size engineering town: townhomes and newer subdivisions in California and Hollywood, older single-family homes in Lexington Park and Great Mills, and waterfront in Solomons, St. Inigoes and along the Patuxent.
- Long-term rentals move quickly in summer; start looking 60 days out.
BAH 2026
- NAS Patuxent River has its own Military Housing Area (Patuxent River, MD), separate from the Washington, D.C. metro MHA, and the 2026 tables took effect January 1, 2026.
- Published figures for E-5 and O-3 differ between the housing-office site and third-party calculators, and some sites incorrectly map the ZIP to the D.C. rate, so confirm your grade and dependency status on the official DTMO BAH calculator before signing a lease.
Lexington Park
The base town: Route 235 chain restaurants and hotels, older ranch homes and townhomes, the most military-oriented rental inventory and the shortest drive.
California
Newer subdivisions, the Wildewood community, shopping at the St. Mary's Marketplace and Route 235 big-box stores; where most civilian engineers and contractors live.
Hollywood and Leonardtown
More rural with larger lots and Sotterley farm country around Hollywood; Leonardtown is the walkable county seat with a town square, breweries and the waterfront wharf.
Solomons (Calvert County)
Marina and waterfront-restaurant island across the Thomas Johnson Bridge; condos and cottages with a vacation feel and the Calvert Marine Museum next door.
Schools & childcare
- St. Mary's County Public Schools serves the whole county including on-base housing; the district's Military Families office is on base at 21993 Bundy Road, Building 2090, and helps with enrollment and Interstate Compact issues.
- Great Mills High School is the closest high school to the base and Leonardtown High School is the other big one; both draw heavily from NAS Patuxent River families and contractors, and Chopticon High School in Morganza serves the north county.
- There is no DoD school on base; children ride district buses from the housing neighborhoods.
- Navy Child and Youth Programs on base run a Child Development Center, school-age care and a youth center; get on the MilitaryChildCare.com wait list as soon as you have orders.
- St. Mary's College of Maryland (public honors college) is 15 minutes south in St. Mary's City and the College of Southern Maryland has a Leonardtown campus for spouses and off-duty education.
Healthcare
- Naval Health Clinic Patuxent River is the on-base facility: a Primary Care Medical Home with pharmacy, dental and specialty clinics, open weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It does not have an emergency room; after hours call 301-342-1506 for the provider on call.
- TRICARE region is East (Humana Military). The clinic has an on-site TRICARE service center with walk-in help for enrollment and referrals.
- The nearest civilian hospital and emergency room is MedStar St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown, about 20 minutes from the gates; the nearest trauma centers are in the Washington and Baltimore metros.
- For a TDY traveler the practical move is to keep your home PCM and use urgent care on Route 235 or the clinic's sick call if needed.
On base
- Commissary & Exchange
Commissary at 22155 Cuddihy Road, Building 2173, closed Mondays; the Navy Exchange at 22099 Cuddihy Road is open daily with a mini-mart and gas station.
- Fitness
The Drill Hall at 47424 Keane Road, Building 458 is the main fitness center with 24/7 unmonitored access for registered patrons; free for military, DoD civilians and families, contractors buy an MWR membership.
- Outdoor recreation
MWR Outdoor Recreation rents kayaks, boats and camping gear; Hog Point campground is on the base waterfront and Navy Recreation Center Solomons has cabins, RV sites and a marina.
- Dining
On-base options are the MWR clubs and food court near the Drill Hall plus the galley for authorized patrons; off base, Route 235 in Lexington Park and California has most chains and Solomons and Leonardtown have the local seafood and brewery spots.
- Legal & finance
The Region Legal Service Office detachment handles powers of attorney and wills; the Fleet and Family Support Center covers financial counseling, relocation and spouse employment.
- Chapel & pets
The base chapel offers Catholic and Protestant services; the Navy Lodge is pet friendly and the veterinary treatment facility handles pet health certificates for PCS moves.
Off duty

Patuxent River Naval Air Museum
Right outside Gate 1 on Route 235, this is the only museum dedicated to naval flight test, with an F-14, X-32, F/A-18 and more on the outdoor flight line and Test Pilot School history inside. It is a 90-minute stop that explains what everyone at Pax actually does.

Historic St. Mary's City
Maryland's first capital, 15 minutes south, is a living-history site with a reconstructed 1600s town, a working replica of the Maryland Dove sailing ship, and archaeology digs you can walk through. Pair it with a walk on the St. Mary's College waterfront.

Solomons Island and the Calvert Marine Museum
Cross the Thomas Johnson Bridge for waterfront crab houses, the Tiki Bar and the Calvert Marine Museum with its Drum Point Lighthouse, otters and fossil hall. Sunset on the boardwalk is the Pax River date-night default.
Official site ↗Sotterley Historic Site
An 18th-century tidewater plantation on the Patuxent in Hollywood with a manor house, restored slave cabin, gardens and river trails. Tours run seasonally and the grounds host farmers markets and wine festivals.
Official site ↗Leonardtown Square and Wharf
The county seat has a walkable square with restaurants, a brewery and First Friday events, plus the Leonardtown Wharf park on Breton Bay for kayak launches and waterfront lunch. It is the best evening out within 25 minutes of the gate.
Official site ↗Piney Point Lighthouse and St. Clement's Island
Down Route 249, the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum is the oldest on the Potomac, and the water taxi from Colton's Point runs to St. Clement's Island where Maryland's first settlers landed in 1634. Good for a slow Saturday with a cooler.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Book NGIS the day you get orders; when a Test Pilot School class starts or a big flight-test period kicks off, on-base rooms and the Route 235 hotels fill at the same time.
- 02Use Gate 1 for anything before 5:30 a.m. or after 6:30 p.m. and on weekends; Gate 2 closes weekends and its Visitor Control Center keeps short weekday-morning hours.
- 03If you are a contractor without a CAC, get your sponsor to submit access paperwork before you fly; showing up at the Pass and ID office cold can cost you a morning.
- 04Route 235 is the only real artery, so pick lodging on the same side of the base as your building; NAVAIR and TPS are on the north and east side near Gate 1, Webster Field is 20 minutes south in St. Inigoes.
- 05The Thomas Johnson Bridge to Solomons is two lanes with no shoulder; if you stay on the Calvert side, budget extra time at shift change and in any wind or ice event.
- 06Bring layers year round: flight-line wind off the bay makes 45 F feel much colder, and summer humidity means a second uniform shirt in the car is not overkill.
- 07Crabs are in season roughly May through October; the crab houses in Solomons and on the St. George Island road are worth the drive on a Friday.
- 08Cell coverage and internet on the south end of the county are spotty; if you rent in St. Inigoes or Ridge, confirm the connection before you sign.
